If the US rally wants to boost a local economy and pitch for the Olympics, why not raze Detroit and build and Olympic venue there?? It will not only create jobs and rebuild a city that is in hell. It also would give the planners and architects a clean slate to work with. Won't happen, I know.
This will do the same for part of Rio, as it did for Beijing. Hopefully it will help the people who live and work in Rio. Although, as I recall from NPR reports, some great old historical Beijing was bulldozed for the Olympics. Like Athens before it, in Beijing the BirdsNest stadium and cube are now vacant. In the end, I do not see what good lasting effect bringing the Olympics to a city may be. So maybe Detroit is not such a good idea after all? I dunno. For the record, I was in LA for the summer games in 84 and LA did a fabulous job as I recall. |

I think it depends on the city and their infrastructure and culture. If I recall, the facilities built for the 84 Olympics are/were used after the games were over. But we (the USA) have huge sporting and other events that would use the venues on a regular basis.

It seems to me that the USA gets the Olympics for more that their share any ways. There are a lot of countries out there. Sure most of them aren't able to host, but many can and should get the chance.
Perhaps North Korea next time? ![]()
