Property rights (inheritance/divorce/debts or judgements against one spouse) could be an issue, as could medical benefits and immigration procedures. Although there could be solutions -- such as employer-provided medical benefits covering employee plus one spouse.

It would be a number of rules to re-write. Not that it couldn't be done, of course. But there would be so many things to think about. In "one big happy family" situations, who is legally permitted to pull little Johnny out of school? Only his mother/father? Or any one of the communal wives/husbands? And then there's wrapping the brain around extended families where husband has three wives, and wife # 2 also has another husband, who has other wives in addition to her, who have additional husbands, etc...

On the other hand -- more work for lawyers! So I say, bring it on!
