I Floop the Pig

I'm officially* faster than a bus.
*Not official It being Friday, manager out of town, and with nothing so pressing that it couldn't wait until Monday, I decided to leave work early. I checked the bus schedule, hopped on my bike...and sat helplessly at a light while the bus pulled up to the stop and departed 3 minutes early (yeah, I was cutting it close). The next bus wasn't scheduled for another 20 minutes, and catching it would have, thanks to missed transfers, gotten my home at essentially the same time as if I hadn't left work early. Bummer. So I got on my bike and started pedaling, seeing if I could take advantage of that 20 minute gap, catch up to some cross-route. Long story short...I ended up biking the full 9 miles home, in less total time than the trip would have taken had I caught that first bus. In the process, I actually caught up to and passed a bus on one route and kept pace with the express bus on that route (admittedly, it was the route directly through downtown Santa Ana at 5PM, but still). I felt super-human! I'm not quite ready to make it a regular event. It's still an hour long ride, and I was definitely fueled by some extra adrenaline that kicked in when I started passing buses, and I can't count and that same boost in the future. But, seeing as I can make the ride even easier by taking the Santa Ana river bike trail instead of Main St., I'm definitely going to start doing it at least once or twice a week. If that goes well I'll try it in the morning as well (we have a gym with showers at work). I had no intention of this turning into a bike commute, but that was orders of magnitude easier than I ever thought it could be. Though now I'm REALLY wishing I hadn't been so dumb to have gotten rid of my old light-as-a-feather street bike just because the dreailleur broke.
