Yet Another Gamer Nerd Puzzle Quest

I realize this is horribly vague and I won't even be able to confirm/deny the answer until after I return from Gen Con August 9th. But if you can help, my party and I will be grateful.

We're trying to solve a puzzle. It can be seen on the True Dungeon Teaser Trailer from around 0:22 to 0:28. It's in two sections, the glowing ball in the tilt labyrinth is something different and can be ignored.

The puzzle board consists of a numbered 7 by 5 grid. Note that the number 17 is missing (skipped):

Above the grid is a riddle poem, but we can't read all of it. The best we can make out is:
  1. garbled
  2. garbled
  3. Place each piece on a number below
  4. That matches our shape if we were to grow
  5. Chance is our mistress your fate we control
  6. Dealing out judgment is our sacred role

There are at least four translucent markers to cover up cells on the grid.
  • Green Square
  • Yellow Triangle
  • Red/Purple Triangle
  • Red/Pink/Orange Triangle (I think that's the shape, we only get a partial glimpse)

My primary goal is to figure out the first two lines. My secondary goal would be to determine the placement of each specific marker and actually solve the puzzle. Unfortunately, we do not know how many markers are used. It could be just the four which are visible or there could be more. I'm willing to bet all of the markers will fit in the blank white rectangle in the upper left, so I have a feeling there are no more than six.

Any Photoshop or other image enhancing experts able to clarify/enhance the first two lines?

An earlier shot confirms that the 4th piece is a triangle.

My first instinct is that we're looking at die face shapes. So the square would be 6 (a d-6 having square sides). The triangles would be d-8, d-20, and d-4. So those 4 pieces we see would be put on 4, 6, 8, and 20

Oooo die shapes, that sounds good! And since TD is based on D&D, that totally gels.

If there turns out to be a pentagon-shaped marker (d12), that's almost a sure thing. Still not sure how the colors factor in, but that aspect may not be part of the puzzle we can see. It's often the case that puzzle clues are subtly given in previous rooms and frequently have to do with colors. (True Dungeon has 7 rooms.)

Is every space supposed to be covered with a shape? Because most of those numbers aren't associated with regular polyhedrons and so there isn't a definite shape that could be associated with them (plus, what would go on the one?).

And why is 17 left out?

This guy is a die collector and he doesn't have anything for 1, 21-23, 25, 27-29, 31, 33, and 35.

I very much doubt it.

I don't know. My only guess would be because the creator needed to get to 36, but that's pure speculation and even then, why 17?.

Going with the whole "chance" and "judgement" lines, it's definitely got to refer to dice.

Ken also says it's dice. And, he said the colors are going off of the traditional D&D dice colors. Look those up, as he can't remember off the top of his head.

So, he suggests playing the proper colors to their numbers as well.

Didn't the D&D dice just go up to 20 and with another one D10 for rand(100) rolls (so no reason to skip 17)?

d4, d6, d8, d10 (twice), d12 and d20?

In which case that's triangle, square, triangle, kind of a pointy gem shape, pentagon, triangle.

I don't recall there being a color associated with a specific die color. I'll keep looking, but nothing so far has come up in my searching.

The original D&D dice just used the five Platonic Solids. The d20 didn't have the digits 1-20. Instead it had 0-9 twice, inked in two different colors. One color represented 1-10, the other 11-20. If you needed a percentile roll, you used two d20s. The d10 didn't come into play until years later. (as did the amazing technology which allowed putting two digits on a single die facet)

The creator of True Dungeon is a big fan of D&D First Edition and loves to put in elements of it into TD. So I would not be at all surprised if he only used five dice in a puzzle.
