Since some people can only make it to the tide pools, and since that will be our only stop actually at the water's edge - that's where the ritual bread and crap-of-life toss will take place. Let's meet up at the parking lot at 1:30 - low tide tomorrow. X marks the spot:
![]() Directions: The Scenic Drive: Take the 110 Freeway south - way, way south. When you hit the land of ocean ports, look for the Anaheim Blvd. exit (it's the exit after Pacific Coast Highway). Turn left at the bottom of the ramp, and then right onto Anaheim Blvd. After passing a zone with oil refineries, you'll come to the 3-way intersection of Anaheim, Gaffey St., and Palos Verdes Drive North - which is the street you want. Turn left onto Palos Verdes Drive North, which is the uphill left (not the almost-u-turn downhill left onto Gaffey St.) Stay on PV North a ways, past Western Ave, and you'll see a sign for the left-hand turn-off onto Palos Verdes Drive East. Turn left on PV East - which is a windy mountain road up and over the crest. On the downhill side, especially if it's a nice day, things will start to get damn scenic damn quick. The road dead-ends at your 3rd Palos Verdes Drive, PV Drive South! Turn right. You'll be driving along some gorgeous coastline, including the wild land-shifting zone known as Portugese Bend (don't worry, it won't be shifting as you drive). When you come to the major intersection of PV South and Hawthorne Blvd., turn left. I think there's some kind of mini-mall and a gas station at this intersection. The left turn will take you into a residential area with the gay name "Oceana" (insert roll eyes here ... oh, wait ... ![]() There'll be an Oceana sign, and the street is actually called Calle Vincente even though it's basically a continuation of Hawthorne Blvd. * Just drive as far as you can on this, all the way to the ocean, and the street will veer right and enter a nice parking area. The end. The Somewhat Less Scenic Drive: * the less complicated and less scenic way is indeed to just take Hawthorne Blvd. Use the Hawthorne Blvd. exit off the 405 Fwy, and travel south on Hawthorne till you reach the ocean. Easier. More traffic, less pretty. |
