Firefighters in rural Tennessee let a home burn to the ground last week because the homeowner hadn't paid a $75 fee.

I saw a comment from someone (whose credentials were that the fire chief was on their facebook friends list - which he is) that said the fire chief tried to go to fight the fire, but the mayor would not allow him. You'll notice, for instance, that in none of the reporting about this is any word directly from the fire chief or anyone else from the fire department. Only from the mayor and people completely outside of the fire department.

They should just have the same policy as mountain rescue groups.

If people don't pay the fee for fire service then if there's a fire they'll still come and put it out but you'll be billed at cost.
