I was assuming that the critters in all the pictures were alive. Taxidermied critters make me a little sad and that takes away some cuteness points.

No, that wasn't the point of the demonstration. But that said, if you can't tell something is dead, why is it less cute just because you've been made to think it might be?

Because until you plant the suggestion that it's taxidermied, it doesn't occur to me. But once said, it can't be unsaid, and now the cuteness is somewhat tainted.

The dolphin pic in question actually does have a tinge of sadness. "Nipper" was two weeks old when he was found on a beach. He had marks from what seems to be net entanglement. His mother was nowhere to be found.

He's fine and will be nursed until he can be freed. Cute, but sad.
