Being alive, and with human-level consciousness - is one of the highlights of the universe. Enjoy it, as I usually do with the happiest groove.
Zillions of years for interstellar matter to coalesce into stars, then billions more for the planets they bathe in light and warmth ... heheh, those that are just the right distance, with just the right mass, and just the right orbit for it ... to give birth to life. None of it possible till the millionth generation of billions-year-old stars to give to the universe their manufactured atoms for rock and water and life. Then billions more years of evolution and lifewipeout and more evolution and more wipeout till finally there are creatures with the consciousness to not only appreciate life vs. notlife, but to begin to comprehend that they came from the stars and that there's a universe out there of which they are a very rare and special part. Anthropocentric as it may be, it thrills my soul to contemplate that we may be the very purpose of the stars, the very pinaccle of the cosmos, the veritable hand of god. And of all the kajillions of creatures with whom we share this planet, though each one of them possesses an indomitable instinct to survive, very few of them - along with us - have the consciousness to appreciate being alive. And always remember - there's nothing to have to DO, there's nothing you have to HAVE. Just BE and, if you so desire, be happy. Last edited by innerSpaceman : 07-27-2005 at 02:35 PM. |

I can relate a bit to the OP.
I found out a week ago or so that the surgeon who performed my life saving surgery in April has developed a rapidly spreading form of cancer in his lymphatic system and lungs, and the survival rate with the treatment (which I'm told is brutal) is only around 15%. My wife taught his three kids in sixth grade, two of whom are now in college and the other is a sophomore in HS. Kind of makes the everyday problems not seem so bad, you know. Kind of weird when the guy who did so much for my health and life such a short time ago is now facing his own mortality in such a drastic way. |

My teeth fit together without pain or weird clicking for the first time in 19 months. Today I am, indeed, happy to be alive.

My day just started looking much better in retrospect.
Definitely a good day in the grand scheme of things! |

The other day, a twenty five year old co-worker of Eric's was killed in a car crash. He was on his way up the corporate ladder- a great salesman, great guy. Engaged, good looking, great job- and now he's dead. I told Eric he is not allowed to have a mid-life crisis, because we know so many people that didn't even really get started on living, and it would be ungrateful and disrespectful to their memories. I may not like the slings and arrows (not to mention the wrinkles and such) that living beings have to endure, but it's a damn sight better than any alternative I'm aware of. My friends accuse me of being an optimist, but I'm not that at all- I'm a realist. I'm lucky for the reality I have today, because it could be so much worse.
iSm- double, triple, quadruple post away- your posts are wonderful. ![]() |

I had happy hour at Camachos with a bunch of coworkers today, to just be together and remember the time we spent with a dear coworker who passed away earlier this week.

I know how you are feeling today.
And, I agree with you, wendybeth, I may not like all that comes with aging but I prefer it over not. I like your attitude, iSm, and I try to live that way, too. I live a modest lifestyle but I enjoy it richly. I don't think I'm always positive but I really try to be. UGH I don't even want to talk teeth.... ![]() I am glad to see people posting they are alive. I was worried....
