Or perhaps they are planning to start the bioscan thumprint system at the gates soon, negating the need for a picture.

They have the "bioscan" system at WDW. Day one I used my index finger, day 2 my thumb, day three the bird. Worked without issues all three days.

How would that make it harder?

It would be annoying to have to pull another card out to make a purchase. AP, credit card, driver's license. I always liked that the AP served the dual function of discount card AND photoID.

Unless your photo is new or you are an identical twin you probably don't remember exactly what you looked like when your picture was taken and won't be able to compare anymore.
