Lingo: We were TOO good to be on the show!

Kinda mad and pleased at the same time:

A friend and I tried out for Lingo on GSN. It's a mastermind like game with 5 letter words.

A friend and I went to the try-out, where they had several mock games. We have the strategy of instead of trying to drop in words that fit mid-way, we drop in words that feature a buch of different letters (like Child, Toyed, Media, and others). This allowed us to get clues to letters we needed that wouldn't fit in. (For example there was a clue of J-V-S. Were thinking "WTF?!", so I said Credit). Then the C was right, but wrong place and the I was in the correct place, so we then did Jives, and that was it.

We beat several other teams that were there. However, the try-out people said that they haven't seen this strategy, and that it's not appropiate for the show.

Oh well. We're like the 'card counters' of Lingo.

Good job to you, Hastin, for using your brains and being too good for the show!

I am more cynical about TV game show casting after a different but similar audition process for the college edition of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire." I use the word "casting" because I'm guessing that qualities like: appearance (Are you good looking?), personality (Are you outgoing and over-the-top?) and knowledge (Make sure contestants are not too smart so the game show doesn't have to give away too much money) are bigger factors than scoring the highest during the game's audition.

With the WWTBAM audition, a room with hundreds of people were eliminated after a timed, written test--with the top scorers going on to a Part II video interview. Less than eight people that day made it to Part II--and I was included in this small group who completed the on-camera interview portion.

I ended up not being called for the show, but that's OK. However, the disappointing part was seeing the college idiots they actually picked when watching the actual TV broadcast.

Not off-topic at all. Game Shows pull contestants just like movies pull in actors. It's all about certain traits. We made it through the written part (fill in as many 5 letter words as you can for the following blanks), but failed the game part. Whatever.

I'm not surprised that you were overqualified for a game show.

I can't believe they won't let that strategy on the show. If you were in an ass-busting mood, you could attempt to get your story into the papers....the media might decide it's a slow news day and do a series of articles on how game shows are full of sht, and you might bring that crap down. You know, like what happened to that game show "Twenty One", as detailed in the movie "Quiz Show".

You'd think after the press that Ken Jennings got for Jeopardy, game shows would be clamboring for highly skilled contestants.
