Who Needs a Humvee When You've Got A Hyundai!

http://www.heraldsun.com/durham/4-643298.html

Quote:
DURHAM -- A trio of Duke University sophomores say they drove to New Orleans late last week, posed as journalists to slip inside the hurricane-soaked city twice, and evacuated seven people who weren't receiving help from authorities.
Pretty wild stuff...

Well, I am sure the authorities will crack down on the journalists they allow in the area from now on to prevent such actions in the future.

I think any rescue or relief supplies have to be visible before FEMA will stop you.

Everyone needs to read the entire article.

God bless those three heroes.

They may not be donating millions of dollars or pulling people off of rooftops, but what they did was definitely heroic in many different ways. I raise my glass to 'em

Well, they made the president look bad (which I'll always go for) but they are exactly what NO *didn't* want. They're lucky they didn't get shot as looters.

Ok, they evacuated people which is good, but the only good thing is that there aren't hordes of people there doing the same thing. That many people coming into the area-

1- they take up resources which would otherwise be directed to the evacuees.
2- they add to the confusion in the area- they could be mistaken for refugees and distract rescue crews from the people they actually need to be rescuging.
3- nobody knows they're there, which means no help will come if (when?) they get into trouble- car trouble, attacked by drug-crazed residents, get sick, etc.

The kids get points for style and bravery, but it was really not all that smart. You want to help, show up at a local Red Cross station, or FEMA takes volunteers. They'll direct you to where you can actually help. Less dramatic maybe but you're less likely to get in the way.

*flame-retardent undies on*

You're right, they don't want tons of people doing this. But they are helping to prove that there was no excuse for the slow response, and that's a worthy thing to do.

Yes, because the president should have gotten into a Hummer and personally started rescuing people himself. In fact, the whole damn hurricane was GW's fault!

Huh? If a Hyundai could get in, why couldn't they send in trucks of food/water/National Guard/doctors/clothes/blankets/medicine/etc? And by "they" I mean "anyone that had anything to do with emergency stuff."

Exactly. They did show that the city was accessible, though I'm sure there is more to the issue than simple accessibility.

And pull resources from an upcoming Iraq deployment? Are you crazy?
