I refuse to watch Celebrity. I was speaking of The Purple Rose of Cairo and Alice. I actually really, really liked Deconstructing Harry. And I also liked Allen's piece in New York Stories.

I wanted to love Everyone Says I Love You. A musical starring average folk, with old-time music. But it really kinda sucked. Except for that funeral scene. That was delightful. And I always love watching Tim Roth.

But Woody Allen's presence often irritates the crap out of me. His kind of neurosis is not my cup of tea. And as he gets older, and only stays the same, I having even less tolerance for his on-screen presence. Though it worked in Deconstructing Harry.

Realizing I haven't seen anything post child-love period, I rented everything he's done since then during a Netflix lull of anything new and exciting.

Most of it was 'meh', but the worst was "Celebrity" which had Kenneth Branaugh playing, I kid you not, Woody Allen. Speech affectations, mannerisms and everything. It was disconcerting. If the role is supposed to be Woody, then give me Woody. The film was completely unwatchable, and I returned it unfinished.

The two gems among Woody's later work, if anyone's interested, are "Deconstructing Harry" and "Small Time Crooks."


Annie Hall's great, but I will always resent it for beating out "Star Wars" for Best Picture in 1977.
