Yep
I never thought that instant replay in baseball was a good idea until tonight. There was no part of that call that was open to interpretation. There is no doubt that strike three never touched the ground. It was the third base umpire who f-ed up on this one! The papers tomorrow should be interesting.

It was the home plate umpire who made a definitive hand signal which prompted the entire Angels team to start leaving the field. Even if that ball were in the dirt, the home plate umpire made it appear that he called the batter out.

here's a story on that call.
and even if they had called out...it doesn't mean the angels would have won... |

It is Absolutley the most BIZZARE Play I have seen in MLB since the Buckner '86 "Oooopsie" Play...
The Hitter can look to the umpire after a strike 3 hits the dirt, and the Ump must tell him weather it was a good catch or not. The 3rd strike was called, but it was low, and with the possibility of it in the dirt, the catcher must tag the hitter, or the hitter can head to first base and must be run down or thrown out. NO Call was given by the Ump so Pierzynski heads to first, the Angels think the inning is over and head to the dugout. Pierzenski is safe at first. This was a miscommunication between the Ump and the Angels catcher, and the rest goes into weird History. (I Cant Say I'm an Angels fan, Go Oakland and Boston!, But If i were, I'd Be PISSED, I never saw the ball hit the ground.)

What more did Ryne want Josh Paul to wait for from the ump? The ump made the univerally accepted hand gesture calling him out, and the ump has since admitted that he did NOT say, "No catch", which is the universally accepted call to make when the ball hits the dirt. Should he have waited for a certified letter?
What's really disappointing is that last playoffs, there were 2 instances where an umpire made the wrong call, a manager questioned it, the entire crew got together to discuss ending up reversing the call to the correct call. It was really great. It didn't happen in this case. The home plate ump never even asked the 3rd base ump, who had the best view. Sciosscia had to go out and ask him himself. Nor did any of the other umpires get together and discuss the fact that the home plate ump clearly signaled an out. Complete failure on their part.

it will be interesting tonight as the same umpire works the right field line. it will be a night he won't soon forget, i'm sure. the fans will see to that.

Tonight sucks.
![]() I am such the Angels fan, although I've always had a warm spot for the Sox (most of my family is from Chicago.) Still, I'm Angels first and foremost and only, so I'm sad. I'm not going to go into specifics right now, but I'm just....sad. I admit I was hoping if the Sox went to the Series they would get their asses spanked mercilessly. I was having a change of heart, but I stopped myself. I hope Houston goes, and I hope they kick ass. And it's not just because I'm from Texas. I want to see them take this if I can't root for my beloved Angels. ![]() Eh, screw it. I'm skipping the World Series. Last edited by AllyOops! : 10-16-2005 at 09:35 PM. |

The ALCS started to end for the Angels when the bad call was made. When the they lost the first game in Anaheim, their season was over.
