TiVO: Record one thing, watch another

Okay, then if you have a 2 way splitter, and I understand you correctly, here is how you should have it set up:

Connect one of the split cables into the first TiVo input.

Connect the second of the split cables into the VCR.

Connect the output of the VCR to the second TiVo input.

Connect the TiVo output to your tv.

Should be A/V (RCA) cables. I'm assuming your TV has audio outputs. You'd connect those to the Aux input of your receiver.
