Y'know, I have to thank CoasterMatt for bringing up White Castle. There were no In-n-out burgers in New Jersey, so a sack of sliders, onion rings and an extra thick shake at 4am was always the perfect end to a night on the town.

That was, of course, until I discovered Gray's Papaya. 2 grilled all-beef hot dogs with wet onions, dijon mustard and kraut with a medium papaya drink for $1.85. My mouth is watering already. Thankfully, I'm going to NY tomorrow so I will have the ability to indulge. And indulge I shall.

Ok, I've had the White Castle burgers that come frozen and they were so disgusting. Is this the same thing?

Not really. The only way to truly appreciate a White Castle is to actually go into the restaurant in the middle of the night and watch them prepare 'em.

First, they ladle out chopped onions onto a very hot grill.
Then, they take the burgers (square little things with 5 holes) and lay them on top of the onions. A good White Castle cook can deal the burgers onto the grill with the finesse of a great Vegas blackjack dealer.
Next, the buns are placed on top of the burgers. Bottom half directly onto the burger, and top on top of the bottom. Since the burgers are perforated and the grill is so hot, they are never flipped.
Finally, with a spatula, the cook lifts each burger from the grill, inverts it, adds ketchup (and/or cheese), sticks the top half of the bun in its rightful place and slides the burger into a box.
Ten burgers make a sack.

Eat 'em hot. Chew minimally.

When I was in high school, they were informally known as "sliders", "belly bombers" or "murder burgers".

White Castle was an important part of growing up in the 'burbs. Local punk band Ism wrote the classic tune "White Castle at 3AM", that went something like this:
Quote:
Headin' home from the city
Friday night at 3 am
We stopped into the Castle
Man was we starvin'
Cracked a couple jokes I grabbed a number
And I got on line
Horsemeat tastes excellénte
When it's cooked in grease and grime
There it is, there it is
Stickin' out like a sore thumb
I'm ready for some action
But the catmeat got my tongue
Don't fondle with McDonalds
Or have a fling with the King
Just hassle with the Castle
At 3 in the morning
Fast food service at 3 am
Hang out till the wee-wee hours of the morning
Got my meal ticket to the restroom
And I let the fun begin
Hamburgers for breakfast, why not?
You're getting toilet trained right in the parking lot
I wanna have a contest
To see how many burgers we can stuff down
In sixty seconds flat
Do you think that's fair enough now
You're walking home with ringworm
It's getting light outside
You're singing that same song
You've been singin' all night
And everybody singin'
Murder Burger
Murder Burger
Murder Burger on a drunken night
Kaopectate
Kaopectate
Kaopectate makes you feel alright
Murder Burger
Murder Burger
Murder Burger on a drunken night
Alka Seltzer
Alka Seltzer
Alka Seltzer makes you feel alright

I agree.
However... they do have a similar flavor to the frozen, so if you werent intrigued you might not like them.

But I agree with Mousepod, the middle of the night is the best way. But for me, I loved walking with my cousins, buying thirty or forty and going home to the aunts and uncles and sharing.
This ritual would occur many times during my vacations as a child, Esp, the first day.
