Nope, I didn't care for Tron in its first run ... and neither did most audiences. It bombed, if I recall correctly.
BUT - - it had great elements, and wonderful style. Jeff Bridges, David Warner and some other fun performers. A cool look unseen at that time, and an experimental type score by Wendy Carlos. None of it gelled, imo ... and I daresay in the opinions of many. But it lived on in fondness for what it did achieve and for its really cool parts which were greater than the sum of. Believe me, I squee at the Tron footwear, the Tron tattoos, and the prospects of the Tron tunnel returning to Disneyland. So, yes, I squeed at the trailer the other night ... and I will be seeing this movie on Opening Day. S.Q.E. Squee. |

Tron gets major props from me for doing a remarkably good job at carrying out the software-as-characters analogy. Not perfect mind you, but to do as good a job as they did at translating some real computing concepts into a story that played fairly well on screen, in the era that they did it, was no small feat.

Yeah TRON is, for me, something that is better in nostalgic memory than in movie-watching reality. I have fond memories of being a kid that are associated with the movie (kind of like He-man, ET, and Scooby-Doo) that transport me to another time when I think about it..... but when I actually watch it I regret dusting it off. Though I never really understood TRON the movie as a kid, I just associate it with good times visiting my aunt and uncle and cousins in the bay area (who just happened to have a tron arcade game in their garage, which WAS awesome). And of course I can't forget the SUPER FRICKIN LOUD TRON TUNNEL at disneyland.

The game confused me and I don't remember the movie. All I remember is the Tron room on the People Mover. This movie looks pretty and like it would. be awesometastic in 3D. I'm sure I'll end up seeing it. I just read the wiki summary and I just hope I don't need to know WTF the first one was about to enjoy the 2nd one. Cause I still have no clue.

Interesting note, Bonnie was a member of the Knightsbridge Theatre Company when I was, and I've been to her and Alan's home a few times. First time there I had to ask why they had a Tron poster in their hallway. He designed and hand built a wooden pipe organ in their music room/library. Amazing.
