I've long thought Portland was a cross between Spokane and Seattle. The area looks like ours and you get snow, but you're closer to the ocean and you get a bit more rain.

Which of course means that you're good at both water ballet and ice skating.

Quite true. Portlanders sometimes get ice storms in January caused by extreme cold funneled in thru the Columbia Gorge slamming into warmer air coming off the Ocean both colliding right over our City. East meets West or Spokane meets Seatle

Oh, and the West-siders have an unfair aquatic advantage: webbed fingers and toes. No way I'm going up against that. I will accept any challenges that involve operating a vehicle on ice, though.
Mt. Doom!

Ooh! I hate driving on icy roads! Hated that in VA. I had a wipe out on a patch of ice 2 weeks after I bought my car. Fishtailing and then a 360 into a ditch. Fortunately, the road was a backroad and not much competing traffic. Shaken up like a martini, but not any damage. Took me a while before I felt able to safely drive though.

I kowtow to you WB!

Yoy wouldn't if you saw me stuck in the snow at the base of our hill, swearing at the little bastards who were sledding and made me stop and lose momentum. (You need to get a really good running start, or you're dead in the snow).

I'm actually pretty good in snow and ice, the problem is everyone else. People on this side whip around in their SUVs. There seems to be this group hallucination that 4 wheel drive makes them impervious to all weather influences and that their stopping distance never varies. It is such a flippin' pain in the arse. It's frustrating that *I* can't drive in snow - not because I'm not sufficiently skilled, but because I'm unwilling to go out there with the yahoos who won't slow the hell down and pay attention. *froths*

I think it's stopped raining for the moment.

Aha! One of my best snow driving memories in VA. My first winter we had a big storm. I was driving, slowly to work because when I called the weather line at the office, we we're still open. The further along I got, the worse the storm and snow became. So I pulled off after 10 miles and called, found the office closed for snow. SO....I turned around and was on Route 29 (2 lane divided highway) and I was moving along, carefully, but not foolishly, then an SUV comes barreling up honking and making rude gestures, so I pull to the right so the clown can pass me and almost get stuck in the snow the plows had pushed to the side of the road. About a mile later the clown is head first in a snowdrfit and poking down in a ditch. As I passed, I admit, I was bad, I waved and beeped the horn and he flipped me the bird. But I did feel like the tortoise and the hare. I, after all, got to the finish line. Bastard, slow down you idiot!

Amateurs.

Can you guys tell me anything about the Mt. Hood/Underwood areas?

And, what is Mt. Doom?

I was up in the Gorge recently. Beautiful. But, very windy. I understand that is what makes it great for windsurfing? We were looking up there to maybe move up there but that wind....

Glad to see you guys posting and in good spirits. It is freakin' hot here today {San Diego}. We went for a walk along Silver Strand this morning. Ran into a couple from New Jersey. Took their pic for them and then I said {because I can't believe it} 'It sure is hot!' and they said they just assumed it would be because this is CA. I told them nope, this is a Santa Ana so enjoy it while you can.

I mean, don't people come to San Diego/CA thinking they'll get hot weather?

Oh, sorry. I do go on.

Any help with my question would be appreciated.

Mt. Doom is the volcano where the One Ring of the LOTR's trilogy was forged. It is also my nickname for the large hill we live on, as it is a huge PITA to get up when it's snowing or icy.

This exact thing happened to BT when he was headed over the pass to visit his folks one year - back when he still had the ancient and decrepit pickup. I won't let him take the car over now because of the morons on the road.
