Obviously not the origin (I don't think) but the gesture gained some additional notoriety a few years ago when it was discovered that a high school yearbook committee had peppered that years edition with photos of people making the gesture. There was somehow outrage when it was explained to the adults in the area.

I had heard the first phrase you mention, but I otherwise feel so unenlightened!

Add me to the apparently sheltered-- and I can see why Alex wasn't going to Google it at work.

To clarify:

Apparently "the shocker" has the middle and ring finger together...not to be confused with the ASU "pitchfork" (which has the middle and index finger separated, like a "peace" sign).

I can just hear the WH photog...

"Okay, everyone spread your middle and index finger far apart..."

A manhunt is under way in western Germany for a convicted drug dealer who escaped by mailing himself out of jail.
