Volunteering for kids

Olivia is now 9 years old. I have been exposing her to my scary liberal agenda her whole life and feel it is time to begin getting her involved.

I know a lot of people here are very socially conscientious, as are their children. I'm doing some investigating, but I"m wondering if anyone knows of groups where young kids can get involved in volunteerism, correspondence with people in other countries, etc.?

I think our scary liberal agendas aren't so scary, though mine does differ from the kids' dad, which sucks. As the years have passed I've drifted even more to the left and he took a sharp turn to the right. When I met him he was a Dem, but now he listens to Michael Savage. So I have to work even harder to promote my scary liberal agenda.

Two weekends ago Gracie spent the night outside in a cardboard box after collecting sponsors. The money benefited a program for homeless and addicted people here in our city. Check around locally, Whitney. I had some trouble finding resources and finally found a group through Gracie's school.

At that age, my girls were helping me cook once a week at a soup kitchen. They also served as greeters there. It was something we could do together.

There were walkathon-type things, too. I'll have to think a little so I can remember what they did in elementary school.

Anyway, good on you, Whitney and yay for your daughter!

I suggest "adopting" a "grandparent" at a nursing home. I did that as a kid and loved it. It really opened my eyes to how sometimes loved ones are just shut away and forgotten, but are still people who need to give and receive love like the rest of us.

There are also kids in nursing homes as well who just need a companion.

Try looking for clean-ups at beaches or designated wild spaces/preserves. I've seen flyers for this kind of thing locally and they're always geared towards families and children.

My friends and I used to visit a local nursing home and just walk around talking to folks. At first, we brought the dogs in to visit, but after a while we were just going to visit one lady (she had us call her Grandma Todd), and we didn't bring the pets any more by that point. It wasn't an official, organized thing, I think we just said we wanted to do it, so my folks called the nursing home and asked if it'd be okay.
