Apple Says Goodbye IBM, Hello Intel
Full Story Here
Apple is going to switch from IBM/Motorola made PowerPC chips, to Intel made chips. Initially switching to Intel for lower end machines such as the Mac Mini in 2006, then to the higher end PowerMac machines some time in 2007. |

I have a feeling they are gonna stay PPC, instead of going to x86. Why? Because, even if they made a copy of OSX for x86, all PPC apps would have to be recompiled, a huge undertaking. However, I do have a feeling Intel will be able to produce chips in a greater amount than IBM can, and that the G5 will get a needed speed boost (and possible dual core?) from this. Sounds good to me....as long as we don't get the stupid little Intel sound after all Apple commercials and the sticker on all Apple boxes....

Interesting. Leading up to this, everyone was saying that the motivation was cost and Intel's ability to provide chips in volume that IBM just can't. However, NPR had a point worth considering. Laptops. With laptops in general gaining market share, and iBook sales being brisk by Apple standards, it's an important market to be thinking about. And Intel is leading the market when it comes to low power consumption chips.

Well, it's now been confirmed by Steve Jobs... Personally, I think it's a good thing for Apple- especially for notebooks, which are currently gaining market share 3 times faster than desktops.

Yeah...the 970 just wasn't cutting it...we were supposed to have 3.0 GHz last year at this time, and we just reached 2.7. Its time for a change.
Its really interesting...if you watch the Keynote on the apple site...they have been developing a version of OS X for x86 since the beginning....I think that the plan has always been for this to happen...and that the whole IBM deal was just a ploy....I think Apple has basically tricked everyone.....almost reminds me of the Sith... I still have a hard time believing it though. |
