Cemetery Film Screenings - Sullivan's Travels - August 27th

FANTASTIC film staring one of my long-time favorites, Veronica Lake.

Chris and I will be going.

SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS

Directed by Preston Sturges
Starring Veronica Lake
Saturday, August 27th
NEW TIME!!!
Gates at 7:00 pm
Film at 8:30 pm
Hollywood Forever Cemetery
6000 Santa Monica Boulevard at Gower
No reservation necessary.
$10 Tickets available at gate.

As a courtesy to other movie-goers: NO TALL CHAIRS!!

As our season comes to an end, we are pleased to bring you one of our favorite films of all times! A comic masterpiece about a successful comedy director who wants to make a serious film, but realizes he knows nothing about trouble. He sets out on the road with a dime in his pocket to find out what trouble is. Along the way he meets up with the lovely starlet wannabe Veronica Lake and together they seek out the world of hard knocks. Nobody marries crackling wit and spirited slapstick like Sturges, who brings a sassy edge to this satirical road movie, brimming with wisecracks and a truly moving portrait of Depression-era America.

DJs john Wyatt and Chris Cutis spin before and after the screening

Follow it up with O Brother, Where Are Thou? or My Man Godfrey, which also provides a glimpse at how Hollywood thought about the Depressoin.

I've always preferred The Lady Eve over Sullivan's Travels. But then I'll also take Barbara Stanwyck over Veronica Lake.

Do they have a separate viewing area for these screenings or is it in the actual cemetery with the graves?

You aren't sitting amongst headstones, there is a large empty grass area with a large wall at one end. But it's pretty much in the middle of the grounds, with graves all around you.

Both of those films would make a good double feature with Sullivan's Travels, but I can't imagine sitting on the cold, dead ground much longer than we do.

As GD said, we're not "on" the graves but next to them and they screen the films on the side of a mausoleum. Johnny Ramone watches the films with us and Mel Blanc wishes us good night with a cheery "That's all folks!". It is wonderfullt creepy and fantastic.

And Barbara vs Veronica......Barbara was the better actor, but Veronica was dreamy!.

Well, it was another great night of film at the cemetery!

There were 9 of us in attendence. We got a prime spot - as the crowds were a bit smaller than before. It sure made getting to the bathrooms easier.

The film was was great! I've seen it once, long ago, and didn't remember how wonderful and witty the dialogue really was. The entire audience was laughing loudly throughout the entire film - but especially the first half.

I KNOW there are homages to this film in "Oh Brother Where Are Thou" but I need to watch that film again to pick up the specifics.

Veronica Lake is STILL my idol - and the first movie star I really admired and wanted to emulate. I'm off to get "I Married a Witch" and "The Lady Eve" - must have more Lake and/or Sturges.

Edit: I Married a Witch is not available on DVD! CRIME!

Ah and the delight in our own group when Sullivan reached an epiphany watching an old Mickey Mouse & Pluto cartoon - that was a moment!
