![]() This story comes to you secondhand, originally from Nirvanaman and Babette (posted by me with at least 50% permission). The two of them embarked yesterday on the VMK tour offered at Disneyland. I don't know the details of that tour, but I guess you are lead around, given some facts, go on some attractions, and have the opportunity to earn in-game points.
One of those point-earning opportunities came in the form of a question, the answer to which, the tour guide assured them, would surprise them as much as much as it had suprised her. And truly it did, for the answer to the question, "Which is the oldest mountain at the park?" was....."Splash Mountain, built in 1973." ![]() ![]() But wait, it gets crazier as she then went on to explain that the characters in Splash Mountain were actually the alternate animatronics from America Sings (would that be the America Sings that wasn't built until 1974, a year after Splash Mountain ![]() ![]() ![]() That's not just wrong, it's so elaborately, wildly wrong I don't even know what to make of it. Either there's some consipracy to purposely disseminate wildly incorrect information to the public, or someone has pulled one major fast one on this poor tour guide and convinced her of this outrageous lie. Or she's just really, really dumb. Had I been there, I'm not sure I could have continued on with the tour after that. But fortunately, Babette and Nirvanaman had the fortitude to stick around and hear the same tour guide talk about doing cats doggy-style.

I would have been frothing at the mouth, had I been in the presence of the described CM. I also would have ditched the tour immediately out of exasperation!

Even more bizarre was, not five minutes later, running into Tony Baxter on Main Street. We were sure he, of all people, could put an end to the wild speculation about the debut of Splash Mountain ... but he was talking with friends and we decided not to be so rude as to interrupt him.
If we'd really had a question about it, I'd have waylaid him anyway - - but I'm as sure about Splash Mountain opening in 1989 as I am about my mother's maiden name. Ha, I remember month after month of opening delays, and the incredible surprise of soft openings on my 29th birthday, and the last-ever Disneyland balloon release on the official opening day of July 17, 1989, and the awesome exterior show lighting on Chinquapin Hill (sp?) on that opening night - never to be repeated. Gak, I have half a mind to take the VMK tour myself just so's I can set that tour guide straight, and get her name for a blunt report to City Hall. |

HI!
|
Why doesn't someone send a nice email to City Hall to alert them of the incorrect information that is being passed out to unsuspecting guests and ask them to correct the facts. I would really hate to embarrass the tour guide when it probably isn't her fault.

Not her fault?!?!! If she didn't make up that lame story about Splash Mountain Sings animatronics of 1973 being replacement versions of the original America Sings robots of 1974, then she absolutely deserves embarrassment for refusing to acknowledge the obvious fault in her information, whatever the source.

Of course, that's the kind, forgiving version. In any case this crap needs to be reported. It's like the ultimate bad-info-from-a-CM case.

it will be fun to tell the newbies about walt's frozen head under the matterhorn, how the original Tink used her teeth to cling to the cable until she fell to her death, about the disneyland jail in the underground tunnels system and about the rebelious hostile takeover by 48 geeks on the carousel led by a middle-aged woman with tangled red hair.
