Need Tivo repair?

So my Tivo died a couple of weeks back.

Yeah, that's all I'm gonna say about that. Tivo owners, can you feel me?

After the requisite whining and the vows of never watching live TV again (I admit it, I'm ruined for live TV. Live TV is what I USED to watch), I started casting around for a solution to my new lack of Tivo-ness.

I could buy a new unit and pay a new "lifetime" membership. Grrrr

Or I could try to fix the machine myself.

OR I could try to find a vendor to repair my old unit; not an easy task. I finally found a company called Lakeview Communications (www.digitalrecorder.com) in South Dakota that appeared to meet my needs. They claim to repair old Tivo units. I also found that if you buy a new machine of the same model from them, they will transfer your lifetime membership to the new box. COOL! They can also add additional hard drives to your unit that will drastically increase the amount of programming you can capture.

Long story short, my new 190 hour box arrived yesterday with my lifetime agreement intact. I couldn't be more pleased.

Here here! What's the Unix one I always hear about?

I'm using Snapstream as my DVR. In addition to basic TIVO like functions I have remote access. From any high speed internet connection (ie work

) I can login to it, setup new recordings, watch existing recordings or even watch live TV. Try that with your tivo. Plus it has the 30-second skip and auto-commercial marking plus it's easy to burn a DVD of a show. Of course you need to have a beefy PC to run it on so cost can be a factor....

That was my original concern about 4 years ago when I first bought Tivo. Plus, the technology (mainly, remote control system) wasn't mature enough back then anyway. Even with spending twice the money back then, I wouldn't get what Tivo already had. But it's looking better all the time. That's probably the way I'll go after I wear this unit out.
