(CBS) LONG BEACH, Calif. An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was fatally shot Tuesday, authorities said.

Maria Cecelia Rosa, 30, of Pomona, was shot outside the home of another female deputy in the 2900 block of Eucalyptus Avenue about 6 a.maccording to the Long Beach Fire Department.

Marta Esquivez, a sister of the homeowner, said Rosa often stayed with her long-time friend, who is a sheriff's
detective.

"They were close," she said. "She was close to us, too, because she didn't have no parents and my parents were like ... her parents. She treat them like they were her parents."

The shooting is under investigation. No immediate arrests have been made.

Off-Duty LA Sheriff's Deputy Fatally Shot In Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was fatally shot in Long Beach on Tuesday morning, authorities said.
Video
Maria Cecelia Rosa, 30, of Pomona, was shot in the 2900 block of Eucalyptus Avenue, said Long Beach police Officer Jackie Bezart.
"She did suffer a gunshot wound. She was transported to the hospital and declared dead at the hospital," said Long Beach sergeant David Cannan.
Rosa, found shot in the driveway with a bullet wound to the upper body, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police say the deputy was shot beside her car. NBC4 reports that she was getting ready to go to work and was armed, but not dressed in uniform. Neighbors say they heard the gunfire around 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Police blocked off the area two blocks in each direction and went to doors to question neighbors.
Rosa owned a home in Pomona, but she lived with a friend in Long Beach because it was closer to work.
Relatives tell NBC4 that she worked in the Los Angeles jail system.
A tow truck removed the deputy's car as evidence Tuesday morning.
There were no immediate arrests, and the circumstances of the shooting were under investigation, Bezart said.

Are you saying one or both of you were witnesses to a police-slaying?

Or just to a bunch of emergency vehicles that, per the recent post-swanking, could have merely been an episode of CSI?

No, we both were delayed, diverted or otherwise caught in the aftermath of this "little" event. It so happens the house is question is a mere 6 blocks from our house on our very street. Chris got caught up in more blockage that I did, but I still had to divert my homeward bound car around the still-blocked streets and the many news vans.

Wow, that's scary. Glad you were only inconvenienced and not otherwise caught up in the whatever.

This is the third murder I've experienced very close to work or home. The first two were in Irvine/Tustin but this is the first in my "ghetto" house.

Well, it's nice to know you both were merely inconvenienced and not in harm's way.

I wasn't even inconvenienced, just concerned.

No suspect yet, from what I've heard.
