A Prairie Home Companion
I don't know if any of you listen to A Prairie Home Companion on NPR. If you do (or even if you don't, because you should, it's very dry and witty) you should listen this weekend. Tom and I were at the Hollywood Bowl taping last night and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Beautiful weather, tasty picnic, and news from the place where all the men are strong, all the women are beautiful, and all the children are above average.
Garrison Keillor--we're both extremely fond of the humorist-- had several guests from the upcoming Altman film (titled, not surprisingly, "A Prairie Home Companion." We're excited to see it!) Meryl Streep was Meryl Streep. Streepy. Virginia Madsen is now my new girl-crush... she was born to be on the radio, she slipped in and out of her various characters with such ease. And so gorgeous. Her bad-girl fighter pilot, and her Hollywood star (and the dyslexic puppies- fra!) were brilliant. John C. Reilly can sing! He was very cute in his linen suit. The Tales from Lake Woebegon were some of the best I remember. All that, plus the Catsup Advisory Board! Catch it on your NPR station. Probably 6ish PM Saturday, noonish PM Sunday. Those couple-thousand people clapping? We're among them. |

I've been looking forward to the movie but unfortunately the early buzz hasn't been all that great (not that early buzz is always right).
I try to listen to the radio show regularly (the good thing about a long weekend drive: listening to "Car Talk," "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me," "This American Life," and "Prarie Home Companion" in succession) but it is hard since I tend to change the station anytime a musical performance starts. |

In my area, "Car Talk" always seems to be followed by "From the Top," which I don't listen to. I wish it was followed by any of those other shows Alex mentioned.
They're probably on in a different order on Saturdays; I guess I tend to tune in more on Sundays. Hmmm. |

(Wait Wait Don't Tell Me has a podcast now. I was never in the car at the same time it was on. I'm happy again.)
Heidi, I'm so jealous. I saw the Hollywood Bowl bus leaving Lakewood Center that night and wished I was on it so I could see the show in person, too. |

I haven't listened in years. I should start again.

I've never listened, but I'm inclined to see the film simply for the general fame of the subject matter, and the deserved reputation of the revered director and the fine cast.
Alas, with so many films crowding the summer calendar, and so little free movie time due to so many social events crowding the summer calendar* ... this will probably be a netflix flick. * Ah the irony of not being able to see first-run movies because a good 30% of the social events crowding the summer calendar involve watching really old movies outdoors in a cemetery. |

I'll definitely be listening! It took me a while to appreciate PHC, but now I am a fan. Because it's so horribly hot and humid when they play here (at Wolf Trap) I've avoided going to a live show.
I'm also quite fond of Virginia Madsen, she's marvelously talented and has been under utilized for years. At least in big commercial films, which is probably a good thing.
