David Sedaris

We just got back from seeing David Sedaris at UCLA. He was great as usual, just back from spending 3 months in Japan, reading a few diary entries from these as well as more great tales from Paris and Normandy. Damn him, he's leading the life I want. I am jealous and inspired.

You probably should, but I appreciate your different interpretations, sans moderation from one another.

Which reminds me... I need to be more diligent with my journaling.

I've never seen him in person, but love his books. Every time I've seen him on the tube, he's usually reading a passage or two from those books. Is that standard fare for live performances or is he more freestyle???

"Plague of Tics" still lays me out every time I read it. I'd type more but I'd have to lick the light switch.

Bongos

Thanks for the reviews! Sedaris' story about Santaland is my crew's favorite audiobook.

Well, get busy then. It's never too late to become a drug addict. Which came first, after all. Homosexuality being a lifestyle choice in the eyes of some, you'll have some changes to make. Or you can just call NA "Hugh."

That's pretty much his m.o. live. Passages from his books, essays, or other writings. Of course, it's all in the reading and his ability to play off the crowd.

I can't stand his books. But the same stuff is incredibly funny when he reads it out loud. I think his voice is just inherently funny so it doesn't matter so much what he says.

I've loved his books until I read Dress your family in corduroy and denim. In that one, he kind of veered away from me somehow. His stories are all about absolute empathy, so if you don't feel for him, you won't get it. Me Talk Pretty is so great - but I just love people's stories about their childhoods.

I believe during the live show we saw, he read out some unpublished journaling he'd done during his tour. That was pretty neat.

The past couple times we've seen him it's been all unpublished works, excerpts for his journal, and then some Q&A, which usually leads to some great extemporaneous storytelling. If you like his works, you should try to see him live (or listen to his pieces on This American Life).
