The judicial branch is the most important one.
It gets the least attention, but is always the one looking out in any way for the civil liberties due us by virtue of the Constitution and our inalienable rights as human beings. That said, it's thwarted at every step by the other two branches (the executive in particular). It's been over a year since The Supreme Court ordered the Gitmo prisoners had the right to habeas corpus, and not a one has had it since. It's even more sickeningly thwarted by the very people whose rights depend on the judiciary. Witness the string of judicial rulings in favor of gay marriage and the reaction of constitutional amendments passed by voters. Watch Iowa go next. Thank God for Justice. If only we deserved it. |
