A Prayer For Southern California

I've been watching the news coverage for the past few days. I wanted to let all of you know out there that my thoughts and prayers are definitely with you. Big hugs for each of you!

Sometimes I gloat inside about other regions with their tornados and hurricanes and floods and icestorms, thinking I'll take our occassional earthquake against that any day.

But I forget about the FIRESTORMS, one of the most horrific natural (and in many cases un) disasters known on this planet, to which we in Southern California are frequently susceptible.

Um, global warming is only going to make fire conditions more prevalent.

This is all very sad and tragic.

New fire just started in Murietta. Hopefully tehy will put that out, or i'll have to evacuate. No calls yet.

My government teacher just got a call today during class saying that her house burned down.

Maybe, but not necessarily. The Santa Ana winds that make the firestorms are primarily caused by relatively cold air at high pressure over Nevada and Utah. So it is possible that overall warming would further dry southern California but reduce the winds that make firefighting impossible.

Wern't large portions of California originally desert to start with? So we've artifically created the problem in building where conditions like this occur.

Not so much desert, but chaparral, a type of landscape predicated on a grow-and-burn cycle. Not a big issue when people were inhabiting the largely marshy flatlands of the valleys and basins, but a huge issue as the sprawl has backed up against the brushy mountains.
