The Birth of Cool exhibition - Last Chance Swanking - 1/5

With the holidays and all the business, seeing this potentially cool exhibition got pushed aside. But, Sunday is the last day so we're making a trip to the Orange County Museum of Art on Saturday 1/5 to take a peak before it's gone.

If you'd like to join us, we'll be there at 11:30. The Museum opens at 11 and admission is $10.

More information is here.

BTW, the exhibition is going to be in Oakland May 18-August 17, 2008 if your interested and live northward.

Is this going to be the January Swanking?

If not, let's put on our thinking and creative caps for something before the end of the month. (I would suggest the Mary Blair exhibit on the weekend of Jan 19 and 20 ... but, well, that's in San Francisco.)

Remember, the organized Swanking Season lasts barely 3 or 4 months, and traditionally January's is a knock-out (Whale Watching, Gamble House and Environs).

Some of us came up with a good suggestion for the February Swanking, to be held near President's Day or one of the pressie's birthdays - - The Ronald Regan Library in Simi Valley - where there is a replica of the Oval Office, the actual Boeing 707 Air Force One from his presidency, and lots of other Ronnie memorabilia (scaeagles, will you be joining us for that one??!)

Don't forget that we haven't had the Griffith Swank yet. I need planning time on that so I can adjust my work schedule, but that can only take place on the 3rd Sunday of the month it is in (because that's the only time Walt's Train Barn is open to the public)

Last year, we had a HUGE swanking idea thread. Who will start 2008's?

Regan LIbrary swanking is cool because I'm about 1mile away from it.

Sunday is a possibility for me.

Great show, even if we missed Spock - if you can see it tomorrow (closing day) go for it. We picked up the catalog which is filled with some extra.

I loved the collection of cultural artifacts of this exhibit, art, architecture, music, record albums, film clips - it really captured the era. Happy surprises for me were seeing the influence of California in this time period as a place of aesthetic innovation. Also, Hugh Hefner's Playboy's Penthouse TV show that aired in the late 50's was something I never knew existed (and apparently not available in many markets because of his mixed race guests).

It's been years since we've been to Newport Harbor - uh Orange County Museum of Art, gotta keep an eye on this venue in the future.

Oh, and Disney Hat's off to Ward Kimble who is also featured in the exhibit with Toot, Whistle, Plunk, and Boom.
