![]() Ok, all you world travelers!
This is my first trip to Europe, so I'm unfamiliar with how this works. I have a Global phone on the way, and will be transfering my phone number to it. Now, because my number is a USA number, I know I will need to dail the country code to call someone in London (44), but do I also need to dial the 00 (NDD-National Direct Dialing)? And why do I hear differences in country code of 011 and 44 for england? Other times I hear +1 (plus being hold down the 1 button or the # button). I will be calling people in London, and Paris. I know that to call the USA from my phone I will just dial the 1-714 as if I'm home, but I'll also need to figure out how to call the USA from a European phone. HALPPPP!!!! ![]()

How does the calling plan work on those?
I'm always leary about them due to the stories one hears about people receiving $5,000 phone bills.....

RStar, make sure you turn off data on that phone or get an international plan. If it's a smart phone you will get charged every time the phone tries to synch for email or anything, even if it fails, and write down the name/date/time of that call for record keeping purposes. |

Yes, I will be getting an international plan for the two weeks I'm there (the phone is a free loaner) for $2.50 for the two weeks, and the roaming charge is 99 cents a minute. Texts are 50 cents to recieve, 5 cents to send. I don't use internet, so that's off anyway. I have Verizon.

I just had a cheap pay as you go phone when I was in France. I had Orange, which is a French company, and I could buy more minutes at tobacconists, grocery stores or phone stores.
I hope your phone works out well for you. |

I got the scoup from Verizon, I need to place calls just like I'm here in the states. It's crazy, but while standing on British soil, I have to dial OUT OF THE US FIRST (00 or +), then the country code to call into the country I happen to already be standing in (44 for England, 33 for France).
Thanks for the help! See you when I get back! I'll try to get on a computer and see if I can log in from Europe. And of course, there will most likely be a trip report posted in one or more place. (Would it be passe, or even redundant, to post it on Micechat AND Mouseplanet?) ~Bob

Oh My.. there'll be tears before bedtime, I tell ya.
...working in a telco, I heard lots of stories about roaming. That's why I bought a virgin phone for $20 in the USA and just topped it up. Your verizon thing sounds OK, though. Let us know how it goes.
