Lol, Szbm!

Soooooo...... another school year is winding down. It has been absolutely the busiest year of my life- I've barely had time to breathe, and need a vacation more than I ever have before. Tori has been attending Riverpoint Academy, located at the WSU campus in downtown Spokane. Every day we spend two hours commuting from the 'burbs, and I've worked my salon schedule around that commute. Taking two hours out of every day necessitated my working an additional day in order to fit in my clients, so it's six days a week, every week, and my day starts at 7 AM, and ends at 8 or 9. I more often than not do my friends and family's hair on the one day I have off, which whittled my days off to about one a month. Yeah, kinda tired. The good thing is the Girl has a 4.00, and is on track to graduate with honors next year. I'm very proud of her, especially since she has refused any accommodation for her hearing loss- she's just like any other student. Looking forward to reconnecting here and gaining some semblance of normalcy (no worries- I know better than to seek that from you lot! ;)) in my private life.

Also, Nick, Bobbi's son, graduated from his HS yesterday, and received a certificate that placed him in the top 10% of WA state honor students. Very proud of him! He also has a gorgeous, smart and wickedly funny girlfriend- he better not **** it up! ;)

OMG. Take a break !! It is really good news to hear of Tori & Nick's academic achievements, and there's only one thing to add really...

...My hair's getting a bit long. Can you pop over and do me this weekend? ;)

Clark Kent may seem like just a mild-mannered reporter, but listen, not only does he know how to treat his editor-in-chief with the proper respect, not only does he have a snappy, punchy prose style, but he is, in my forty years in this business, the fastest typist I've ever seen.

So, I saw my oncologist two days ago (that was the only time in the past 20 years that I missed DL's Anniversary). It was the one year anniversary of my surgery to remove my invasive melinoma. Everything looks great, no reoccurance, so I past the one year mark cancer-free. What a relief! :snap:

Of course I must continue to be carefull and have regular check ups. It was stage 1B, so I caught it early enough.

Hurray for one year post- cancer!

I will have to make it to a Disneyland birthday one of these years. I've never been there on that day, in the several years now that I have had a pass. I've given it up now, so I'd buy a day, but it just seems strange that I've never gone for the birthday.

If you want to go one step further for the ultimate melt-in-the-mouth chicken experience, try putting the raw chicken breasts in the cold stock (with the spices) the day before and leaving it overnight in the refrigerator before bringing it to the simmer the next day to poach it with the veggies. This 'pre-brining' in the stock will über-tenderise your chicken and infuse the flavour even better !!

Jack Douglas is one of those figures that are very famous when active and then completely forgotten once they stop. I've read a couple of his books. He was a humorist in the way people could be on the old talk shows. Not really a stand up but just came on and was funny.

He wrote a handful of humorous memoirs (kind of a David Sedaris of the '60s and '70s now that I think about it). While I haven't read this one, the first part of the title is a reference to him being Jewish and his wife (who also was someone known though I can't remember her name but have just looked it up and it was Reiko) was Japanese.

The fact that now nobody knows him doesn't bode well for the comprehensibility of Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls in 40 years.

So...a lot of people really have no concept of how to assess risks, especially relative to other risks.

I shouldn't be, but I continue to be amazed by how many people decide to be scared of something that doubles your risk of some horrible outcome without first asking what the baseline level of risk was.

If some action increases my risk of dying during the thirty seconds I'm performing that act from 1 in 1,000,000,000 to 1 in 500,000,000 I'm still not really going to be worried about it.

Inspired by two instances (one work, one online) in which people made sweeping pronouncements about how people should behave based on absolutely no sense of the actual risk. "Someone experienced a bad outcome" says absolutely nothing about risk beyond "the risk is probably non-zero."

ETA: Oh, and yes, my view on what constitutes acceptable risk may change if I had children (though hopefully not to the silly "any non-zero risk is unacceptable" standard I see wielded by parents whenever they disapprove of a risk but ignored when they approve of it) but that wouldn't change the validity of the assessment of actual risk. Joining in irrationality does not make it less irrational.

I have done a few wild things in the past, things that I won't easily risk today, as my very existence is now in service to someone else. It's much more drastic than the slight shift I had after getting in a long term relationship...

#2 is not even close to true. The Dodgers have one of the most consistent crowds in baseball.

Attendance history (http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teams/laatte.shtml)

In 2005 they finished 20 games under .500 and saw an average of >44,000 per game, a total of 1.1 Million higher attendance than the league average.

It should really read, "We're only here for the middle innings".

Alex
03-13-2014, 05:32 PM
Is that counting sold seats or people through the turnstiles? It certainly possible (and i have no idea) that the Dodgers could have spectacular season ticket sales but they're bought by people who readily skip games when they're not winning.

I know that the Giants regularly had lots of empty seats at sold out games after the initial glow of the new ballpark wore off.

Ghoulish Delight

It is paid tickets, not turnstile attendance. But Dodger ticket holders regularly show up. Definitely not one of those stadiums that's 2/3 empty on weekday games.

I took it to read in reference to all sporting events, not the Dodgers in particular. But I don't know if that's what was meant or not.

And if being picky, can Disneyland really be claimed as the most expensive place on earth? I bet we can find examples of more expensive places somewhere on earth. And looked at per hour of entertainment, I bet going to the movies is more expensive.

Alex

My Premier Annual Pass cost $1,000 essentially. On a per-ride-rideen basis over the year that is probably no better than $50/ride. So it's up there. For me anyway.

Ghoulish Delight
03-13-2014, 10:18 PM
The Disneyland joke is a hyperbole with some basis in reality and a play on their slogan. The Dodger crack is pretty baseless and even if it was somehow aimed at ALL sports attendance, putting over Dodger Stadium shows that someone really doesn't know what they're talking about as they are one of the most well attended franchises in sports history.

I was sitting near a woman on BART the other day who was promoting and handing out literature for this site:

http://www.geoengineeringwatch.org/She would be a good one to hand literature discussing the dangers of Dihydrogen Monoxide (http://www.dhmo.org).

Some of the known perils of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:

Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
Contributes to soil erosion.
Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.
Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.
Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.
Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.
Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.
Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.
Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.

Some of the well-known uses of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:

as an industrial solvent and coolant,
in nuclear power plants,
by the U.S. Navy in the propulsion systems of some older vessels,
by elite athletes to improve performance,
in the production of Styrofoam,
in biological and chemical weapons manufacture,
in the development of genetically engineering crops and animals,
as a spray-on fire suppressant and retardant,
in so-called "family planning" or "reproductive health" clinics,
as a major ingredient in many home-brewed bombs,
as a byproduct of hydrocarbon combustion in furnaces and air conditioning compressor operation,
in cult rituals,
by the Church of Scientology on their members and their members' families (although surprisingly, many members recently have contacted DHMO.org to vehemently deny such use),
by both the KKK and the NAACP during rallies and marches,
by members of Congress who are under investigation for financial corruption and inappropriate IM behavior,
by kids who play Beyblades,
by the clientele at a number of bath houses in New York City and San Francisco,
historically, in Hitler's death camps in Nazi Germany, and in prisons in Turkey, Serbia, Croatia, Libya, Iraq and Iran,
in World War II prison camps in Japan, and in prisons in China, for various forms of torture,
during many recent religious and ethnic wars in the Middle East,
by many terrorist organizations including al Qaeda,
in community swimming pools to maintain chemical balance,
in day care centers, purportedly for sanitary purposes,
by software engineers, including those producing DICOM software and other DICOM software tools,
by popular computer science professors,
by aspiring young adult fiction writers,
by international travel bloggers,
by the semi-divine King Bhumibol of Thailand and his many devoted young working girls in Bangkok,
by the British Chiropractic Association and the purveyors of the bogus treatments that the BCA promotes,
by commodities giant Trafigura in their well-publicized and widely-known toxic-waste dumping activities in Ivory Coast,
in animal research laboratories, and
in pesticide production and distribution.

What is the instrument they're using to "paint" with? From what I saw, I believe it was just a sweep broom with the bristles tied together - that way it can hold a reserve of water.

If not an actual broom, it looks like it could be a broom: it fits in with the theme of the artists looking like janitors since their water supply is the thing used to sweep small articles into.

I love it because it's not some production; it's not announced or anything, they just wander up and start painting the street seemingly randomly (at least that was how it was done when we last went to Disneyland over a year ago). Just some fun random thing thrown in.

It's still far from clear, but what they might be saying (or at least would seem to make some small amount of sense) is that rather than everyone from apartment dwellers to large factories paying the same cost per/gallon rate the amount you pay per/gallon will vary with the size of your meter, use more water pay more per gallon.

Ghoulish Delight
08-06-2014, 08:33 AM
Still weird. Why would the size of the meter matter? Why not just have a tiered pricing scale based on usage?

0 to X gallons = A¢/gal
X+1 to Y gallons = B¢/gal
etc.

That's (sort of, ignoring the whole peak hours complication) how Edison handles electricity.

Otherwise someone who is in a small apartment with a small meter that leaves their shower running 24/7 would pay less than someone in a large house that conservatively uses the same amount of water.

Our complex divvies the water bill up based on # of bedrooms. Which kind of isn't fair since Lani and I have a two bedroom with two people (and we do 50% of our showering at the gym) while the family across the hall has two bedroom and four people.

That's (sort of, ignoring the whole peak hours complication) how Edison handles electricity.Oddly, at work, our electric rate is determined by the spike demand level each day. So when we start up our large press and it happens to occur at the same time the AC system kicks on, that is considered our power use rate for the day and that is what we are charged on (the whole day is charged at the usage rate of the spike).

Still shaking my head over that one

So when we start up our large press and it happens to occur at the same time the AC system kicks on, that is considered our power use rate for the day and that is what we are charged on (the whole day is charged at the usage rate of the spike).

Still shaking my head over that oneSeems like a good way to encourage better distribution of power usage to avoid peak-load on the infrastructure.

Seems like a good way to encourage better distribution of power usage to avoid peak-load on the infrastructure. Not practical. It would be akin to telling a taxi driver to only drive when the traffic is the lightest.

The press runs 24 hours a day and by nature is regularly starting and stopping (it has to stop to change jobs, which can be from 3X to 20X or more per day).

Besides, it wouldn't make a difference when we put the peak load on: even if it was 3:00 in the morning, that spike would still be the rate our entire day would be based on.

The power company's would argue that, they must generate enough electricity to meet the spikes in your usage otherwise the local grid would come down whenever you hit one of your spikes which would probably be unacceptable to you and your neighbors. It's still difficult to store electricity with the current grid architecture.

Sooo...

We dropped Headliner off at College last weekend. So far this week, she has setup her Dorm room, written her first essay, picked up all her text books, made a dozen new friends, went through formal rush (which apparently is a really big deal in Texas), oh and got a paying intern job in her field of study. Girl is tearing it up and classes don't start for another week.

If she really picked up all of her books she's off to a bad start. Never buy your books before week 5 only after a class has proven it will actually make use of them and you haven't found a readily available alternative.

You end up never buying 80% of the books and the rest goes towards what college is really for: Spending all your excess money on stupid stuff.

Very nice, Moonie! Headliner is just embarking on a new and exciting portion of life that most look fondly upon for the rest of their lives! And may it go exceptionally well!!

In the case of cars, the new model year (in this case, 2015) comes out soon (some have started already) and they want to clear out the previous model year before no one is interested and they lose more value.

Also, aren't mattresses ALWAYS on sale?

I have also picked up another teenage son. oh well, the more the merrier! This one wants to be a chef. It is fun and a little frustrating sharing my kitchen for the first time.

I have memory foam, and really like it. However, my wife like a firmer mattress than I do, and am considering a the Sleep Number for next time. I think they even offer it with a memory foam top if I'm not mistaken. The best of both worlds, perhaps. I have read some unpleasant reviews online (face it- only bad reviews make uit online 90% of the time) about water condisation on the outide of the mattress causing mold growth in humid areas of the country. So I'm not sure about that part...

On my unrealistically red hair (okay let's be honest, it's basically fuscia this time around)... I get quite a few compliments, but have received only two complaints. Neither complainant is under 70. That's probably a pretty solid record, yeah?

My stepmother was #2, today. Not too pleased about the backhanded dig she took. It was along the lines of "So are you going to change it before the CAR (organization my dad is involved with) dinner?"

You know, I was very seriously considering going brown soon, but suddenly I feel a lot less motivated to do so

Me "About the same time you lost your hair."

I didn't see him again for seven years.

My youngest is getting married this summer. She's decided it's going to be in the Jackson Hole area. The celebration will be on the luxe side of cowboy, according to her. Cookout - no. Cowboy band - yes.

I am deeply touched by this. Our kids went out to Wyoming with us practically every summer growing up.

Congratulations to your daughter!

Me, my big excitement was getting to Knott's for the day and night. Bought a pass for 2015 and spent the day in the park. Shows, rides, and taking lots of pictures in the Ghost Town. Evening was of course during Scary Farm time, so did some of the mazes.

Wins: the mazes and the Hanging are as much fun as ever. The monsters were on their game and I loved watching them scare people. Especially the ghouls in the Ghost Town and the scary clowns. Awesome.

Lose: Food. The food was awful. The staff working the sales areas don't necessarily have any idea of the prices for what they sell or what the options are. And there are no shows in the park except for the Hanging and the Elvira show. Last year they had a half dozen little stage shows around here and there. Also, they had large props that did things: a jack-in-the-box done for Halloween that went up and down, a wagon that had a werewolf that popped out, that kind of thing. This year... all you got were signs for the starting point for the mazes. Need to write to them and let them know where they failed.

When getting a mani pedi and more than one person works on you, is it appropriate to tip each person separately or just give the whole tip to one person and assume it will be divvied up appropriately?
If the former, how do you handle it when paying by credit card?

alphabassettgrrl
02-05-2015, 06:01 PM
I would think you'd put the tip in the space on the credit card slip, or give it to the person that ran the card for you, if you use cash.

blueerica
02-06-2015, 10:28 AM
In the food service settings I've worked in, the tips get divvied to varying degrees. (Wait staff tip out bus boys, bartenders, etc.)... I'm not sure if that holds true in other service industries...

SzczerbiakManiac
02-06-2015, 12:06 PM
I know the tip gets written in the tip space on the credit card slip, my question was how to handle the tip when more than one person worked on me. There is only one line and I don't think writing "$5/$5" on that one line would be kosher.
