If anyone is interested... One of my mother's neighbors is selling her 1964 1/2 Mustang. She is the original owner, and it is in beautiful condition.

Mom didn't know the price, but can find out.

So a couple of months ago I got a new BBQ. I LOVE it. It has infrared heat. Basically there is a metal shield between the grate and the gas jets so it distributes heat more evenly and there are no flare ups because the drippings from the meat never hit the jets.

I'm a horrible judge of when things are done as my parents were questionable cooks at best. For my Dad grilling meant black all the way through. So I've been cooking using a temperature probe and letting that be my benchmark. Things have turned out so darn good. If you like your meat crispy then it's not the grill for you but we don't really so it's perfect.

We've been doing steak, chicken, corn, asparagus, brussels sprouts and pizza. I got pizza stones and it's taken a little experimentation to get the sauce and cheese amounts right but they turn out really good.

While I'm grilling it's been cooling off so much in the evenings that it's been just lovely to sit out and read. We're close to the freeway maybe 300 yards tops so there is a bit of noise. I got this great fountain that makes a lot of water noise so its been very pleasant to sit out there and read while I grill then have dinner.

When Maddie has homework she either sits out with me or just inside. Its just been a wonderful start to summer.

Firefly (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303461) was a wonderful, albeit short-lived, American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) television (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television) series written by Joss Whedon (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0923736/). It was basically a Sci-Fi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sci-fi) Western (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_(genre)) that was very well written (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screenwriting). Unfortunately, it did not last long (only 14 episodes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_episode) + a wrap-up movie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_movie) that came out a couple of years later).

Well worth checking out if it is available in your neck of the woods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia).

I wonder if they had a control where they made an non-tripping artist with similar skills sit in a room for 8 hours repeatedly drawing the same subject as their whimsy took them.

I'm not saying the LSD didn't impact the result, just that I don't think that an unaltered artist would have produced 8 identical portraits either.

Skin cancer is very treatable and now that you're diagnosed, you're going to get it treated and it will get better. This is a GREAT thing that you have found this now instead of later.

The red light camera? Well - hard to put a happy spin on that. But in the grand scheme of things, the comet is not going to hit you.

Which is a good reason to hold off a little longer until Windows 8 shows up. In many ways the difference between Windows 8 and Windows 7 is bigger than the difference between XP and Windows 7. So if you're going to make a transition, might as well wait for 8 and do it once rather than spending time to get used to 7 only to then move to 8.

I use XP at work and 7 at home. What is weird is that when I first got the 7 machine it all seemed so strange and weird.

But right now if you asked me to make a list of how my XP machine is different than my Win7 machine the only thing that comes to mind is being able to maximize windows by dragging them to the top of the screen.

Not saying they aren't different, just that I've apparently internalized them all into one big "computer" and I just switch seamlessly between them like I can use a mouse equally well with either hand.

You are one of the few people I know (actually, only) that have said that. It wasn't a total and complete failure, but my experience with Vista was that I spent more time dealing with OS related issues (stability and performance) than I should have; I heard similar complaints from others.

I don't think I've rebooted my computer other than to install updates in the last three years. Certainly have never had it crash that I can remember.

Vista's problem was spotty hardware support. I had Vista on two different systems. One was rock solid stable, the other was constantly having issues.

As a general rule (no 100%, but true of most of the anecdotal evidence I saw), it had a much harder time with notebooks than desktops.

Lost out on an awesome nature photography opportunity today (admittedly of the cell phone variety, so I don't think I blew my chance at a pulitzer or anything).

Went to my car at lunch and in the space next to mine I caught sight of a lizard out of the corner of my eye. One of those little lizards ubiquitous to SoCal, maybe a few inches long, 4-5 inches including the tail. (Incidentally, I have NO idea what kind of lizards those are? Anyone? Kevy?). I see them all the time and am in no way afraid of them. But before I even got a good look at this one, something triggered me to be startled, some subconscious indication that this might be weird.

After a bit of a jump I got a better look. What I had recognized was that it was stock still and looked like this guy's mouth had been impaled on something. Something blue and stick-like. My first thought was, "Oh sh*t is that lizard choking on a q-tip?!" Like I said, I'm generally totally comfortable around, and pretty fascinated with, these little lizards. However, any animal in distress tends to freak me out. Mostly because I feel like I SHOULD do something to help, but do not possess the wherewithal to do so. "Oh sh*t, I feel bad for the thing, and it's probably within my capability to help, but the though of touching it is freaky and gross - cause what it it's dead, or bleeds on me or some sh*t. But I feel bad!"

So yeah, all that was going through me head...until I finally registered that the blue stick sticking out of its mouth was in fact the tail end (still firmly attached to the front end) of an ex dragonfly. This little dude wasn't in distress, I had just interrupted lunch time. The meal was easily as big, if not bigger, than the little lizard. Chow time!

Sadly, after I got my phone out of my pocket and started the camera up, I took half a step to lean in for a good shot. That finally spooked him and he bolted, leaving the prize behind.

Now I felt bad that I scared him away from an awesome meal. Sorry little dude. (Or dudette I guess, I didn't ask it its gender).

We have lots of those lizards. I like them - they eat bugs. They only time they bother me is when they hang out on the wall of the house right about eye level. I don't see them until I get close and when they scurry away. . . I flinch every time. There one that lives near the front of the house that's missing it's tail... but just starting to grow it back. I've decided that rehearsing two shows is too long to sit in one place. I also don't like classes that have large numbers of dancers. These are inevitably the ones who have groups of dancers going offstage, and coming back on in a different wing than they left. This means they have to go around a curtain and dancers seem required to finger the stage drapes as they go past. STOP IT.

I mean, in your home do you touch every rotten thing you pass? Every corner? Does your mother make you clean the corners? I would.

Not to mention that half of them *fling* it out of the way, which looks really bad from the audience point of view. They see things moving, which catches your attention, and you're now looking offstage instead of at the dancers onstage.

Maybe I'm just grumpy. Some schools teach their kids stage manners. This isn't one of them. Not to mention that they have competitive dance teams, which means suggestive dance bits from tiny children. It winds up being a little creepy. I can accept suggestive moves from girls, say, age 15 and up. But at 8? Not so much.

While they are mischievious, they are not shock jocks. However, they did get into trouble a few times. Once, they had a contest where the prize was a gardening hoe that they painted black, and called it a "Black Ho". That contest was shut down, and I think they got fined or something.

The other stunt I can think of is when they talked someone who was in Time Square at Christmas steal an ornament off of the Christmas tree, but I don't recall if anyone got in trouble for that.

Wow. I'd missed that as well. I started listening to them in high school about the time they first started... '86ish? When we were engaged we called about something or other and they told us to elope. Went to one of their events at the Orange Circle I think it was. Had tickets to a Christmas party/concert with REO Speedwagon but was too sick to attend.

I love them - even when they are stupid.

Not sure if Brian can pull it off on his own. He's really funny and all - but they go together so well. Will they be keeping Brian with his current crew of Kelly, Frank... and whoever else?

Sooooo.....we got out new kitty today. My client, Verna, purchased him about 6 years ago, when she was 87. Now that she's 93, she's worried she isn't giving him the level of care he deserves (she totally was- he is a very spoiled little boy), and she asked if we would take him into our family. It was heartbreaking to carry *Buddy and all of his stuff out of her apartment, but I told her if she missed him too much we will gladly bring him back and that we would be ready to take him in again at any time in the future, but she was adamant- today was the time to do it. He's gorgeous- a ragdoll/persian mix, flame point and brilliant blue eyes. He spent a lot of time in his carrier on our bed, then prowled the room and promptly dove under the bed. The other cats are acting predictably: Samwise snarled at him, and Haku seemed mildly interested in him, but more so with his climbing tree, which he sorta broke right off the bat. I told Tori that Haku and *Buddy would probably form an alliance and kick Sammy's ass off the island, but truth be told Sam is the alpha boy, so they'll probably resort to passive- aggressive hissing and toy-hiding. Anyway, *Buddy is being sequestered for the time being until we can gradually integrate him into the household. Have I mentioned how cute and fuzzy he is?:D

*Tori feels he needs a full name, so his new name is Castiel Beauregard (Buddy) Anderson.

Circle of life - I said goodbye to my 16-year-old kitty Illuminati this morning. She died on my bed, cradled in my hands. A day ago, she was active and brimming with attitude. Last night, things fell apart very quickly. I'm just glad I got to talk to her on her way out. So, today is going to be really terrible, and some of the days ahead are going to be even worse. But, she was a joyous light in my life. I wouldn't have missed having her for anything.

She is survived by her adoptive Maine Coon brother Tsunami.

We're okay for now. The neighbor has a generator and we're chipping in for the gas so we can run our fridge (and laptops and internet) off of it. So at least our food won't spoil. The daylight basement is actually fairly cool, what with being mostly surrounded by dirt. Shortly I'm going to gird my loins and take a daylight look at the garden. No damage to our place, that I know of, but a tree branch from our yard tore open part of our neighbor's roof. Happy today that I am a mere renter.

It was indeed a storm like I've never seen before. Just continual lightning for the duration. The rain and wind were like unto that bit in the boring prelude to the backlot tour at disney studios where the guy gets water dumped all over him. It was seriously crazy. They recorded a gust at one of the airports (Dulles, I think) of 79mph.

And you know what the really fun part is? (Aside from it being near 100 degrees and having no a/c...) We get to do it all again tonight!

We actually got our power back at approximately 9:30pm Sunday. Tonight it went out for about 10 minutes again and I nearly lost it because a cheesecake was in mid-prep. But it came back on so the cheesecake crisis is averted. There are definitely still homes in the neighborhood that are out, and many neighborhood streets are blocked by either trees or downed power lines. A house we drive by every day about 2 blocks from here has downed lines in its front yard.

In addition to the general "safe and sane" variety that we lit off in the street with neighbors (my kid's first experience with fireworks you light at home) there were fireworks in the sky everywhere. Down in the valley we could see them exploding all over the place. In our neighborhood, they were in the sky on streets in front and behind ours.

Very true but the diabetes ads an extra layer. Have to pack for every random plan. Like if her pump stops working, then she needs different insulin and syringes, if she's too high she needs to check keytones, back up meters for the back up meter. Etc. I wouldn't worry as much as I know she knows what to do but she's traveling with her dad who after almost 3 years, don't. And if she's way off high or low she doesn't think clearly. She'll be fine I know that. I'm just in overload mommy mode. She did DC, Philly and NY for a week all by herself so I know she knows what to do. The Yellow side looks cooler...

On a side note, Matt: Have you ever been Skydiving?

And... It claims the title of tallest drop from "Dreamworld in Australia". Aussies have amusement parks? I thought for death defying thrills they go into the Surf to play with the rips, Jellies, Blue Rings, snakes and shells.

You dont have to wory about Dreamworld on the Gold Coast... you're going to fly right over it on your way up to Cairns.

I might take you to Luna Park in Sydney if you're a good boy. it has an original 1930s house of fun.

Soooo.... my husbands paycheck was returned for NSF.

Yes. We just moved to another state for this job.

I'm trying very hard not to worry about this because, frankly, there is no going back at this point. At least not in a way that would be a planned and easy transition.

Also - WTF?!

We had banking issues the weekend we moved with our bank changing computer systems, a big move, and walmart charging my credit card twice and starting a fraud alert on my account. Also, my husband paycheck held because of a possible NSF - but that seemed to be cleared up with a quick phone call and immediate release of the funds after I spoke to a different customer service rep.

Yes - all that on one weekend as we moved to another state. I chalked it up to the poorest timing ever and lack of training on a new system.

Now though? I'm rather alarmed. What sort of business has NSF issues with payroll? And I can't help but wonder if it's actually my bank having issues with out of state affiliate banks and junk.

In the mean time, if he deposits a replacement check today, it's not going to clear for days and days. I guess we'll have to open an account at a local credit union after all.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I know you are a good guy, even when you are a bad boy.

Man Betty, that sucks! I hope all gets worked out quickly. Where I work went through tough times, and my paychecks bounced once in a while. I taped the check to a tennis ball and bounced it back into the accounting department. They got a good laugh out of that.

Betty

They're saying it shouldn't have bounced... that same check that had issues the weekend we moved was the one they sent back. And of course, the new check was cashed without any issue so I guess I'll just stop worrying about it unless it happens again.

I ran lights for today's show. First time I've done it for a "real" show, where they have changes and actual design for it. Kind of fun. Scary, because if I screw it up, you can't see the dancers, or it looks funny to the audience. Not to mention it shows on their DVD, since they video the shows.

But the client is happy, so my mistakes weren't terrible. :)

So Lani bought one of the DVDs for cats. Lately she's (the cat, not Lani) has taken to sleeping on the TV stand right in front of the TV and every once in a while does show some interest in what is on it. So we were curious if she'd react to it.

It has been so long since I actually used the DVD player (probably 2 years at least now) that I suddenly realized I wasn't entirely sure how to do it. Early adopter (we were the first people we know with one; early abandoner I guess).

The Puppy Bowl
Professional tennis
Any and all versions of The Nutcracker
