I freaking love steampunk for making really awesome clothes popular and therefore available! Look at this new motoring coat pattern Simplicity (http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?cat=4&type=19&sec=37&startrow=1) just added!

Steampunk is at it's best when it's fully functional. (http://gizmodo.com/5238365/fully-functional-steampunk-vibrator-might-scald-your-privates)....

Possibly, just ever so slightly NSFW

I took on a project tonight and even managed to finish it (yay!). I photographed all my sewing patterns so that I have basically an online catalog of what I have. I even cut each photo down to just the pattern, and renamed the files by the pattern numbers.

Amazingly enough, there seem to be exactly 100.*

Oh, and naturally uploaded them (http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b321/morrigoon/Patterns/), so I can access them on the go when I'm at the store wondering if I have such-and-such pattern or not.

(*-for now! Number does not include multiples of same pattern.)

So, you know how my job sucks? Well, Monday my boss was so busy trying to figure out the travel system that she had to actually let me do some work. Shocking, I know - allowing one's employees to perform the job for which they were hired. I got to brief a colonel who's pretty sharp and asked questions that I had to actually think about to answer - but was able to answer, because I actually paid attention to the training I had to take and I actually learned the concepts. And he apparently was impressed by me, as was reported to me the next day.

Then, Tuesday, my boss had left on the above-referenced travel, as had every single other person in my little unit, so I was the only person available to attend the very secretive limited-attendance meeting about up-coming changes and how they would impact us. And I was actually able to articulate concerns that were relevant and insightful. And wrote a summary and ccd my boss's boss on that email.

It was the best two days I've ever had in the 7 months I've been there. I actually got to think. People asked me questions and I answered them. And I demonstrated that I wasn't merely an ambulatory pudding packet. Sure, when I get back from DC I'll be back to data entry and web surfing, but for two days I had a taste of real work. I had to stay late and everything. It was beautiful.

Well, after all was said and done, the Franchise Tax Board just came back to me with good news. H&R Block (meaning me as I do my taxes online) had errors, I do not owe them as much money as I thought. They just sent me a nice letter with new figures and a tax bill that is 1/4 of what it was. Whew!

Bought tickets last night to see the Animal Collective at the Wiltern next Friday. Paid a bit of a premium as the show's been sold out for a while and the tickets came from the secondary market, but they weren't marked up too much and it beats driving to Tuscon on a Sunday, the other option we might have had to see them.

That also happens to be the day I'll be participating in a career day at my old high school. A chance to see teachers I haven't seen in a decade and hang out with friends.

All on a vacation day from work.

Is it next Friday yet?

19 Rides of Terminator: Salvation the ride makes me seriously happy.

One of the best GCI built wooden coasters I've ridden, with an impressive amount of theming done (and there's still a bit of tweaking going on to the second preshow area).

For the non coaster fans here- imagine taking Space Mountain and Big Thunder (at night), putting on some Barry White, breeding them in a night of coastery passion, their lovechild in wood would be Terminator: Salvation.

Nonstop speed from the moment you leave the lift hill, tons of direction changes and pops of airtime- TAKE THE TUNNEL!!- and it doesn't let up till you hit the brakes.

I need a moment alone.

Yes, it is that good.

I agree with everything Matt has said in the above trip report. I think nightime rides are the BEST on this ride EVER. No need to go for Fright Fest and in the DARK. It IS darker than dark in that end of the corner.

I went in with LOW expecations and this ride and themeing BLEW me away. The front of the ride is themed (nice big sign and a vehicle out front) so i knew we were in for something. The que area is themed and once into the preshow rooms they are nice and air conditioning. This is very important for Magic Mt in the middle of the desert in summertime heat.

What can i say about the preshow rooms? I wasn't expecting the themeing and the setup to the actual ride. I think this is where it just blew me away right from this point on. You go thru 2 preshows rooms and even though the effects in the last preshow room weren't operational (hopefully on June 28th) it still led up to the urgency of having to rush up the set of stairs to the train waiting for you. It really felt like the robots were trying to get to us.

Once in the station the rows are numbered above with Terminator theming in a way and the trains themselves not only comfy but themed as well. Once aboard the soundtrack starts and you just feel nothing but excitment as if you are being chased by the robots.

The funny thing about this ride is it takes you to the left of the station where as Ghostrider takes you out and turns right. So i was immediately disoriented. The lift hill even gets you up faster than i thought it would.

The ride itself....nice and smooth which is a huge plus for me, pops of airtime (love this in a woodie), soundtrack fits with the going over the top of the lifthill "Here they come!!!" to gunshots as we make our start to the ride that i just can't find the words. Twists and turns and i don't think there is much of anything straight way track. The trains seem to FLY thru the track with speed and no real slowing til you reach the final breaks. I was amazed at this.

I love the comment "Take the tunnel!!!!" and there are effects in the tunnels that weren't operational at all (but hopefully by June 28th).

No bad seat at all. We rode in the front and the back and the middle of the train. The employees seem to be effecient or the ones that were there last night. No real stacking of trains. Getting them dispatched in a timely matter.

So Knott's has nothing on this coaster and i think i just found my FAVORITE Southern California wooden coaster right in my backyard of sorts. :)

of course getting in 19 rides in total throughout the evening wasn't bad at all. I thought we'd only get 3 maybe 4 rides in total but i guess not everyone who won showed up for the KROQ party. And other rides were open and alot of winners went to other rides rather than stick out at Terminator like the coaster enthusiasts did. Thus having the ride nearly to ourselves.

madmonkeygirl
05-22-2009, 10:38 AM
Management did say they nailed this ride and themeing etc. They sure did. If they continue (hint hint was told there's more like this to come in the parks future) then i think we're going to spend as much time if not more at Magic Mt than we do at Disneyland. Sorta Disney'd out for awhile. After last night and seeing the park in the condition it is in after 2 months ago (no trash on ground even for a KROQ event) etc Disney could take a lesson or two from this park.

They performed two songs (an original and "Beyond the Sea") for an audience of maybe a dozen or so of us in the building. It was a nice preview of Saturday night.

Well, it was our Boris kitty's turn for drama this week: he has been throwing up a lot and bleeding from a place that's just not good, not that any place is good for bleeding.... Anyway, we took him to the vet yesterday and they took x-rays. The x-rays showed a spot on his colon that shouldn't be there, so the vet had the radiologist look at it today. Meanwhile, I Google colon cancer in cats and it's not good- very bleak prognosis in most cases. So, I steeled myself for the second cancer call on one of our pets this month. (Haggis suffered from stomach cancer and we had to put her to sleep two weeks ago). They called this afternoon, and our vet told us that the radiologist thought the shadow was just stuff that was passing through, and nothing to worry about. However, he thought he detected some crystals in Boris's bladder and thought we should get some tests done to rule out emerging FUS. The vet said they were barely discernible, and said that so long as Boris was improving with regards to eating, etc, we could wait until next week to bring the poor kid in for more tests. (He was SOOOOO upset on the way to the vet- he cried and cried so much that I wanted to cry! Last night he was a total lovebug- I know he was sucking up so I wouldn't put him through that ordeal again....) So, reprieve on the fatal illness, a possible early intervention on another very bad illness, and one happy and relieved family. :)

Now, if he'd just quit ****ting on the carpet.

Ghoulish Delight

Hugs to Boris. Makes our vet woes seem tame.

Took the bunnies in to get nails trimmed, and while there I had the vet check on some worrisome bumps I'd noticed on the back of Munchkin's neck. She figures they're scabs from over-scratching (we had noticed she'd been scratching a lot, and doing a lot of head shaking as if her ears were bugging her). No external signs of mites or flees, and nothing noticed under a scope. But her ears were a bit over waxy. Hopefully it's just discomfort from that and maybe a minor infection.

Which means we've been torturing her since Saturday. Two ear drops in either ear, twice a day. She's been a TOTAL trooper about it though. There was one day that she fought us, but from that experience we learned to do it without having to pick her up and it's worked well. I'm honestly shocked at how well she's put up with it, considering how much of a fight I would put up if someone were chasing me to drop crap in my ears twice a day.

wendybeth
06-17-2009, 11:46 PM
Poor Munchkin. Crazy humans chasing her around her house, dumping wet stuff in her ears..... if she were a cat, she'd poop in your shoes.:D

Boris ate some Fancy Feast tonight- so far, he hasn't upchucked. The vet gave him a shot to quell the nausea and we kept him off food overnight, hoping for a system reboot. He is still acting supremely happy to be home- I wonder if Haggis's trip to the Place of No Return had him kind of freaked? He still pooped on my bedroom floor, but since he hasn't eaten much it wasn't as epic as it could have been.

Got a letter from our mortgage lender reminding us that our 5/1 ARM is about to readjust. I've been putting off dealing with it so I figured okay, this is a good incentive because the letter will tell me how high the new rate and payment will be.

It's going down. Two full points down! A bit over $350/month lower payment! It'll stay at this rate for another year and then adjust again, and based on recent news it looks like rates will continue to stay low low low for quite some time to come.

Needless to say, I'm pleased.

I'd say that if you're wondering, if you're not there, you might be close.

A mild happy, but always nice to mention nice things...

So I got two emails of interest today. The first is from the lady who runs a group I'm involved with, mentioning a super secret special project that they need 100 people for. I think/hope, given the timing of the thing, that that means there will be space for me to participate, and I'm SUPER excited about that prospect! Unfortunately, I will not be able to divulge any details until after the fact.

Second is that I got an email from a Company recruiter asking if I was still interested in a part time assistant position I'd sent my resume in on a few months (or something, don't remember) back. Well hey, she could have looked at the resume and thrown it out, so chalk up one for being contacted, and another one for my enthusiastic response. Yeah, so it's CR... but I'm a CR now, so no loss there and a step-up in position/responsibility. Maybe I'll even get to interview for this one.

And this concludes another episode of Moderately Cool News...

I have good news that I think I can actually divulge now.

I fell in love with a high concept pet boutique that is located in downtown LA and approached them maybe 9 months ago about opening a Long Beach location. It has gone from "who is this woman on crack" to "we're interested, can you give me a tour of LB" to "looking for locations" to "signing a lease for a store on 2nd Street in Belmont Shore". The lease was signed yesterday, the keys are ours tomorrow, the built-out starts immediately and our opening date is October 1. I'm so excited I could scream but I'm also scared shytless. Change is good but man is it scary! But, this combines all of my loves into one great package. So, it's back to work full time for me (and Thurston gets to come to work too!). Check out the web site. Consider it your initiation.

If you survive that, you'll know you really love the new job. ;)

I'll trim her nails for free first.;) I will not be doing the grooming. (Thank God!)

I am so happy for you though. This is right up your alley! (Not to mention almost in your backyard!) :)

Did a major upgrade of on the desktop computer today. We have plans to eventually move it out of the spare room and into the living room. For that to happen the thing had to be a lot quieter than it was.

New power supply, new CPU cooler (Scythe Katana 3 'cause I know Matt will ask), new case fan. What a difference! Barely a hum anymore. Muy pleased.

Oy!

Had a horrible "oh sh*t!" moment last night as I was drifting off to sleep. It suddenly occurred to me that I hadn't removed the protective plastic liner from the heat sink before installing it onto the CPU. Had to jump out of bed and power the server down. Fortunately it was pretty well idle since I'd powered it up so I doubt it got hot enough to do any damage (the AMD Athlon 64 X2 runs amazingly cool anyway).

Gotta pick up some more heat sink paste and hope the plastic didn't melt onto the CPU.

FYI...

If you are considering eventually going to Windows-7 you can pre-ordered at 1/2 price (https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss__1_6?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=windows+7+upgrade&sprefix=window) until Sat.

Hmmm, that's tempting.

The server continues to run beautifully with Vista, so I'm not touching that. But the laptop with Vista is declining. So I'm debating whether to go with XP. But now that seems like a pretty good option. HMMMMMMMM.

You'll have to decide for yourself, but here is one review (http://xkcd.com/528/) I found helpful.

I feel lucky just knowing how to turn it off and on.

Make sure you have enough staff on-hand to assist with that. ;)We recently had to trim Ally's nails and it took three of us. Two dedicated to holding her and the third to hold and trim. And even then, it was a challenge.

Had a very positive interview for W C Penfold Stationers in the city for a customer service role. I'll know in a week if they want me for the second stage - an interview with the Director of the company !! (eek)

Stoat and I also passed our provisional riding tests on the scooter and in 12 months will have full-fledged unrestricted bike licences. Yay !

I'm so happy I had to have a spoonful of Marmalade. (yes, I know...)

Also in other news:

(http://www.pussyandpooch.com/boutique.html)

We'll be having a big opening party and I hope all of you locals can come.
How the HECK did we miss this???? YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to NA. We want pics.

Hugs to all.

That's not the worst of it! I'm lucky because I'm over (ahem) 25.

Under 25, you need to spend 3 months on the L (Learner) plates, 12 months on the P1 (Red Provisional) plates, and 24 months on the P2 (Green Provisional) plates !!

Does the USA have L and P plates ?

I hit the 70's soft rock jackpot.

You know those late-night infomercials for multi-disc music compilations? Well, recently I've been seeing one that interests me: Romancing the 70's. Yeah, I know that makes me totally lame sausage, but I like what I like. Anyway... I get up here to Dad's, and it turns out he has the whole set! And I have my laptop at hand...

I now have enough music to annoy you by for HOURS, muahahahah!

I'm still getting my head around this but it definitely belongs in the "Happy" thread:

The couple whose engagement I announced last month in the "So" thread...I found out last week they are also pregnant. (It must be going around.)

And that makes me stunned and speechless, among other things.

I just had some happy come my way, although, it's pretty minor and silly...

Was finally re-organizing the linen cabinet and found a brand new long-forgotten stained glass celestial shower curtain which will work PERFECT for covering the panes of our two living room windows that we wanted to decorate with a non-permanent stained glass effect so we can leave the blinds up all the time and still have light and privacy. Now just to get the can of removable adhesive, and then slice this sucker into squares and we're all set. :D

Just registered for my fall classes today, and I've been approved for the BOG fee waiver again for the 2009-2010 term, making my balance due ZERO!!! I am SO doing the happy dance!!!

This semester, I'm taking two dance classes that will force me to take a "break" M-Th at 11am for a couple hours. So, that's 2 hours of high-intensity fun aerobic activity four days a week (goodbye fat!), and then I'll be at Coastline which is within 15-minutes walking distance from our home two nights a week for animation and web interface design (for creating my own video players, etc.), and I'll be doing Dreamweaver online. So, I'm going full-time again, but with a much more open and easy schedule. :D
