okay, I just got a George Foreman grill, and so far, it makes me happy. I grilled some fish, and it actually came out! :)During our second trip to DL, Tori kept telling me about this thing we really should buy. She couldn't remember what it was called, but was adamant about the fact that we just needed it. We drive all the way from Washington to Anaheim with her telling us about this mysterious item, but for the life of us we couldn't figure out what the hell she was talking about. We get to the Disneyland Hotel, get into our room and turn the t.v. on. Suddenly, she starts yelling " That! We need that!!!" It was George Foreman and his grill. Here we were, at the DLR and staying at the DLH, and the kid was more excited about the frikken grill. We never did get one.

(Don't even get me started on the Flip-Fold campaign...)

Oh, and I'm real happy about our upcoming DLR visit in 12 days.

I love playing soccer. I wish I had the time to really practice and get better at it as I still struggle mightily with the basics of ball control, and occasionally decision making. But I'm super happy that I get to play every week, especially on a day like today when we've got enough people to play full 11-on-11 teams. It allows me to settle in to my preferred midfielder position where I spent the bulk of my park league time on the pitch and where my hustle can make up for my lack of foot coordination.

What a great day! After a week of getting it ready I was able to get back on the Internet radio airwaves after a year's absence. I used to do live shows but my computer is too slow for that. I will now be on the air each week with a new recorded show from 8-11 PM Eastern (5-8 Pacific)

This week among other things I spun a set for the "Swanky Hipsters at the LoT", some pirate songs dedicated to our newly married Pirate couple, and a set dedicated to Teresa in memory of Delores.

It will re-air later this week and I'll let y'all know when.

I'm listening to 5 volumes of "Living in Oblivion: The 80's Greatest Hits". I'm in heaven.Of all the 80's compilation disc's, this series is my favorite. It really has a great cross section of music and includes some lesser hits which I enjoy.

My second favorite is the Richard Blade series. There is a lot of duplication between the two collections, but the RB collection has some great stuff that LIO doesn't.

I like it specifically because it's not much of a cross section. It's pretty squarely in the New Wave camp, which is fine by me.Cross section of New Wave: the edgier and the poppier. I consider songs such as 'Too Shy' - Kaja Goo Goo, 'Mickey' - Toni Basil , 'Heart and Soul' - T'Pau, 'Shattered Dreams' - Johnny Hates Jazz, etc. as Pop, not New wave. But that may just be me.

FINALLY. Something happy to post about in this thread. It's been sick/grief/worry-about-Mom pretty much nonstop all month. But today, it's... plan for the family total-serious-happy.

My sister, her husband and their five excellent kids are coming to visit. They live in Indiana, and they generally don't travel far so we actually thought they were never coming to visit us. We got a call from her a month ago, saying that due to unforeseen bounty they're going to fly out and spend three days with us in LA. We're going to do a beach day, a Hollywood day and a Disneyland day.

I'm making a welcome basket for when they arrive. The kids are 6, 8, 11, 13 and 15. What would you put in a "California" themed basket? I have some ideas but I thought some of you might, as well.

An Orange
an Oscar statue
A disposable camera
blingey sunglasses
California Poppy Seeds
How to draw Mickey instructions with a pencil (that says California on it, of course) and a pad of paper.
A glass vial to collect beach sand

I'd create some sort of sight-seeing game. Count the palm trees, spot the Hollywood sign, count the stars on Hollywood blvd or the footprints at Grauman's, find these characters at Disneyland, etc.

The real as in only "LA" team. Let's see. Your Kings are last place in the NHL. They've been "rebuilding" for at least the last 3 seasons. Have won one division title in franchise history. And have been around for 26 years longer than the team that has earned 1 conference title, 2 division titles and won the first Stanley Cup in CA (all done in 14 years).

I bet their super good at golf though! :)

It's 3" feet across and I love it.

It was a bit awkward carrying across the street and into work, CP is picking me up after work and I don't have my car with me. Figures I'd find something like this.

Thanks all, for the swell recommendations for the welcome basket - it went over very well (even the palm tree snow globe. Or should I say - particularly.)

We've had a very happy first day together. We took the subway to the Hollywood farmer's market for fresh fruit samples, then ventured to the tar pits and the Page Museum. My mother-in-law, who has volunteered there as a paleontologist for 14 years, gave the kids the whole behind-the-scenes tour, bringing us into the dig pit, and into the bone-cleaning work stations and the long corridors of fossil storage; the kids got to pet a mastodon and hold a sabre-tooth cat skull. Everybody had a blast. We took a brief stop at the Grove for the American Girl Place experience, and then had a lovely drive up to Griffith Observatory to see the view. What a day!

Tomorrow we're splitting up - the boys are going on the Warner lot tour, and my Disney client is kind enough to allow the girls onto the Disney lot. Then we're hitting Santa Monica pier. Tuesday - DL/DCA!

I love being a tourist here, too! I think I'll be taking a few days over the summer to play. There are museums that I have not seen yet! Plus there's shopping on Melrose.

Oh, we can TOTALLY swank it up at the tar pits. It's in a fun area of town, too, so we could do a post-swanking in, like, museum row or little Ethiopia...

We should probably wait a few months (my mother-in-law teaches at a nursing school when she's not volunteering, and her stint just started again yesterday.) Plus, in the summer she can take us down to the pit where they're actually digging!

We had a total blast yesterday, too. Our Disney lot "un-tour" was awesome, we just got to wander wherever we wanted to. And that included into the archives, which was so effin' cool as a fan that I geeked out in front of the kids. I even got to see the snow globe from Mary Poppins! The bedknob from Bedknobs and Broomsticks! The costumes from High School Musical II! (That's cool, apparently, if you're eleven. It was a hit with the girls.)

The boys loved their Warner tour - saw a couple of celebrities, including Gina Torres from Serenity (Tom said she's even more beautiful in person, which I find shocking because I think she's just about the most beautiful woman ever.) Then while waiting for us to finish up at Disney, they went to Universal Citywalk and the two older boys went skydiving in a simulator bubble. (We got to watch the video - both of us want to do it now!)

Then we all met up to stop by Jetset to see my office and their beloved pal Audra, who was also able to join us for dinner (we were so happy to have her.)

Next stop was Venice beach, where some waded in and others decided just to jump on in and bodysurf in their clothes. Nobody could remember swimming in the ocean before; it was hugely popular. Also popular was the Venice boardwalk, thanks to a number of unusual and inappropriate tee-shirts, towels, paraphenalia and people. One of the favorite stories of the trip has been the "world's greatest wino" (or so it said on his sign - though we pretty much agree) who walked around singing "jingle bells, jingle bells, help me get drunk." For Catholic-school fifteen, thirteen and eleven-year-olds, this kind of thing is fascinating.

Now we depart for parts Disneylandia! All are excited. (Me too.)

We're pretty proud of the trip that we planned. They gave us control to come up with what we thought they'd enjoy - and so in return, we've blown their little minds with the goodness of L.A... one of the teenagers has decided he's going to retire here to volunteer at the tar pits like my MIL, and bodysurf in the off-hours.

I just finished a painting I started *10* years ago :)

I promised myself no new projects until I completed one of my old ones (and then promptly set myself to work on Neph's wedding gift, LOL), but tonight I finished the teacups painting - finishing the stonework in the wall and redoing the Alice leaves that used to bug me so much (because I'd done them wrong).

I also did some work on a much more recent work-in-progress, my TSI painting. Now that I have the right shade of brown, I was able to paint over the mill on the island and make it much more realistic looking. I am *very* pleased with the change - yay! (looked like hell before, especially set amongst some pretty decent trees and water I'd done).

I just finished a painting I started *10* years ago :)I have a woodworking project that I started about eight or nine years ago that still needs to be completed. It is a five-section Barrister's bookcase. the only thing remaining is to make the crown and the base, install the glass in the doors and mount them and finish it (stain and laquer). The actual work needed is relatively minimal (the wood for the base is already cut, it just needs to be assembled), but the unit are sitting in our living room being used to hold books and Disney stuff.

Sigh. Now I am not so happy. Maybe this should be posted somewhere else.

Since it's officially on the intarwebs, (https://www.pmf.opm.gov/FinalistSortByName.aspx) I'll make this public here, too.

I was named a finalist for a Presidential Management Fellowship. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Management_Fellowship)

It's not a job yet, but I will be attending the job fair in DC this month (you would not believe the deal on a totally SWANKY hotel I got - right in the middle of everything). There are some really interesting opportunities through this program. There are already some postings for jobs that would combine all my interests into one phenomenal career. They're not conventional legal practice, but they would definitely make use of my training, and several are sufficiently "legal-esque" that the experience would likely be seen as an asset if I wanted to transition to practice later. In fact, the DoJ specifically includes those coming out of the PMF program in the list of those who can apply for entry-level positions there.

Anyhow, I'm very thrilled to have made it this far. If I am named as a fellow, it will likely result in my joining the bitter east coaster club; there are positions throughout the country, but most are in DC.

It might lead to a new job and it might not - but it's an excuse for me to finally visit DC.

Today I had the most Dilbert/Office Space experience in my 10 year existence within the corporate world.

I don't know if it makes it better or worse that everybody involved knows just how stupid it was and that it had to be done anyway (SOX compliance can kiss my ass until such time as it is fixed to focus on things that actually protect markets and investors).

I could be annoyed but, since it is unlikely to recur, I am actually pretty amused and pleased to have been involved with such perfect (and therefore beautiful in its way) inanity.

One of my pet peeves of my workplace is the absurd amount of things justified by "SOx compliance" - No where in SOx is an IT help desk required to keep screen prints of every reported problem, and nowhere does it say you have to keep these permanently - Oh and surprise, there are regulations far more restrictive than SOx that have been around longer than SOx - bah! the next executive briefing I'm going to have everyone fitted for Orange jumpsuits.

Seems as good of a place as any to share this.

We have a wonderful cat. His name is Rufio. If When he is out after hours, when I go looking for him, he happily walks home with me. I do not need to chase him or even offer treats: he just knows it is time to come home.

He is very popular within our condo complex and many people know him. There is this one couple that when they take their evening walk together, will sometimes find Rufio. When they do, they have him follow them to our place. When the door gets knocked on at 9:00 at night, Susan and I look at each other and say "Rufio's home!"

Last night, when I came home at about 10:00, I saw Rufio in the driveway. I rolled down my window and called for him. He saw me and came trotting over to my car to say hello. I told him it was time to come home and drove on to our garage. He trotted along behind me (staying clear of the car). When I got to our garage, he stopped before the garage because he knew I backed into the garage. After I was parked, he crossed over to the walkway and patiently waited for me to get out of the car and close and lock the door. He then followed me into the house.

I love that cat!

Hello from the new MacBook Pro! I can't believe it's true, but it is the first time that we've had two fully-working computers while cohabitating. Now we can post on LoT at the same time, instead of standing over each other waiting for the computer. (And, now I can actually work at a coffee shop without being laughed at - I had been using a very very old bright orange clamshell mac laptop from... oh, probably 1999 or so.) Woo, and hoo.

Where would this racing be?

Capt Jack
10-21-2008, 08:38 AM
local 1/8th mile drags. they run them on a pair of tracks they set up in the stadium parking lot. www.RaceLegal.com a program to keep folks from street racing and give them a place to get that "need for speed" out of their system in a good, legal, SDPD supported way.

every other week or so depending on the stadium schedule.

it was a great night. 4/0 win/loss on the night, even against some cars MUCH faster than my own (gotta love the big red bulb...on their side). no records set or trophy's won, but a good night of racing none the less.

I like that there's a place to go for racing so they don't have to do it on the street. A couple of my coworkers race their car on a track; I think they go to Pomona. And congrats on a good night of racing!

So Arwin got nervous & nearly backed out of our date. He decided to go through w/ it but then got stuck in traffic on the 91. As I waited for him @ the GardenWalk, he drove past and ended up @ another theater somewhere in Orange (I think). So he calls & asks me to wave but he doesn't see me. Then he asks if I was @ the Century Theater (which I was not). So then I sorta guided him back to Anaheim & to the GardenWalk. By the time he arrived he was right on the dot..........two hours late. He wanted to see a movie but the box office closed 5 minutes before he arrived. So we went downstairs to the bowling alley called 300 and played few games. I won each one. We had fun, though he said he didn't want to play against me again cause he was tired of losing. I parked in the DLR Timon lot, so we walked slowly from GardenWalk to the Timon Lot. Once I got to my car, I gave him a ride back to his & demonstrated SYNC (btw: I love my car). So after I dropped him off back @ the GW parking garage, I turned around but accidentally drove over part of a concrete divider. No damage done but we both got a laugh. As I was on the 5 fwy he called me and asked if there were any restaurants open cause he was hungry & missed dinner. So I told him about the Denny's on Katella. So then he asked me if I was interested in joining him. I was 2 minutes from my apartment at this time. So of course, I turned around and drove to Denny's. I arrived only a minute after he had been seated. We definitely have similar food & drink tastes. He was quite happy that I was a fan of Dr Pepper. As we ate our meals, I did a Chaplin imitation for him, using two toothpicks and two pieces of sausage. I followed it up w/ two toothpicks and two french fries (he said I had to use a potato to do it right). We both laughed a lot. Throughout the mean he had his sandles off & was gently kickin my legs in a playful manner. When we left he hugged me & pressed his cheek against mine firmly. He called me about 8 minutes later & thanked me for this evening and asked if we could do this again. I said absolutely.

What a fun time. I loved this part

Throughout the mean he had his sandles off & was gently kickin my legs in a playful manner. When we left he hugged me & pressed his cheek against mine firmly.

But I read that as chest not cheek. Still sounds like fun though. The bowling part - yeah - when you lose over and over - not so much fun. Arwen, you'll just have to find something you can beat him at (or with? lol).
