I understand. It would be different if you had a hen house full of hens, and supplying you with eggs is their job. The few eggs she will be supplying won't make much difference, unless they are particularly tasty.

On the other hand, one way to use them (If you don't want to waste them) is to use them in something like a cake, pancakes, or other baked good where you can't tell they are there.

But, as mentioned before, if they are not fertile, they're not really her chicks. Eating them isn't much different than using her droppings in the garden to grow veggies.

Besides, you feed her and give her a home. Everyone should pull their weight and help out. That could be her contibution.

Yes, it was wonderful that he was so nice. His timing was a little different than I otherwise expected but it's ok. I enjoyed it anyway.

I hope they get it figured out. Maybe it's just that she's old, but hopefully it's something they can help.

It's hard to motivate people who just want to avoid the issue. You know facing it is necessary, and I hope your mom can deal with it reasonably soon. I'm not sure what they can do about Alzheimer's, but if it's truly something along those lines, you need to know about it so you know not to give him valuable things that he'll lose (like his wallet). It's also easier to handle dealing with his odd behavior if you know the reason behind it.

I hope your parents take care of themselves.

I had a feeling something was up. I found her in the garage this morning. She had pushed the door open. I shooed her out. She then started whining at the back door. I went back out and she was in her cage in the pen. I went back out an hour later and there were 2 eggs. One is flesh colored and the other is a pinkish brown.
Don't feel bad about using her eggs- they won't hatch, and she really has no use for them other than hatching baby chicks. I worked with a guy who has chickens, and the eggs are better than what they could buy in a store.

Besides, you'll know her eggs come from a healthy chicken, unlike what you buy.

The thing with the eggs falls along the lines of me refusing to drink fresh milk. We would get milk directly from the dairy, or when my mom was milking a neighbors cow, and I would not touch it.

I told her I would save the eggs for her. She told me that I wasn't much of a farmer if I refused to eat the eggs and what was I doing having a chicken. I told her Chicken is a pet and she was NOT my idea.

Ethically, eggs and milk do not (intrinsically) harm the animal. Even a pet can produce; if it were something that harmed the animal it would be a different issue.

But if it causes problems for you, then you should pass on them.

It doesn't sound like an ethical issue. It sounds like it's just a little too earthy for comfort.

I've often wondered if I could raise an animal and then butcher and eat it. Not sure I could. I raise fruits and veggies and eat them. Milk and eggs I think I could do, but the meat may be going too far for me. To each his own, though. Do what you are comfortable with.

Well, you see, the earth rotates on an axis. It takes 24 hours for the earth to complete each rotation. As it does this, most spots on the earth's surface (depending on the time of year) pass through areas exposed to and hidden from the sun. This is how we denote the passage of each 24-hour period. When 3 dark periods and 2 sunny periods follow leaving work on Friday night, the following sunny period is what we call Monday morning, which happens to coincide with the time you are expected to return to your place of employment.

Aren't you glad you asked?
