Sometimes the server ping for Skype that provides status hangs on Skype's end. When this happens you'll see what you saw. Usually it is transient though I've seen it last for a couple days before.

The graphic returned is dynamic based on status so requires more than just downloading a static graphic. I forgot they were there since skype is now blocked at work so the graphic just doesn't appear at all and can't hang.
