Woman Locked Out Mom, kidnapped 5 kids

Authorities issued an Amber Alert Wednesday after a woman disappeared with five children she had taken in when they were displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

But then something changed, she said. On July 13, the children's mother called Precinct 4 Constables "to report an acquaintance of hers was being reluctant to let her see her own children," said Capt. Paul Staton.

Waters said Tavey apparently locked Alphonse out of the house and then took off with the kids.

"Basically, she took in the family, including the mom, and then when it came time for her to give the kids back to their mom she refused and she left the area," she said. "Nobody knows where she is right now. That's why we're doing the Amber Alert. That's the last resort."
