Bill's mother called from South Carolina last night. She wanted to see if we were safe, and whether or not we might be evacuated.


We live in Long Beach.


It was expected. She has no clue about the geography of California, and whenever anything happens anywhere in the state, she calls to make sure we're safe.

My grandparents would call from Nova Scotia any time there was any sort of earthquake in CA. Since they were 4 hours ahead they knew about the 5.0 in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere before we had even woken up. Oh wait, we'd wake up to their calls. It just means they care. At least in my grandparents case.

I called my Mom even though I knew she was not in danger.

I am particularly antsy about fires and wind. When I was about 14 or 15, growing up in Chatsworth (there were far fewer houses north of us at the time), I spent a scary 4 or 5 hours up on our old wood shake roof with a hose, constantly wetting it down and occasionally putting out a smoldering embers. Took me a long time before I would even recognize Halloween (the fire happened on Halloween).
