Kodachrome - the end of an era

Eastman Kodak is retiring Kodachrome film. The final roll of film will be shot by Steve MCCurry.

Quote:
Photojournalist Steve McCurry's widely recognized portrait of an Afghan refugee girl, shot on Kodachrome, appeared on the cover of National Geographic in 1985. At Kodak's request, McCurry will shoot one of the last rolls of Kodachrome film and donate the images to the George Eastman House museum, which honors the company's founder, in Rochester.

For McCurry, who after 25 years with Kodachrome moved on to digital photography and other films in the last few years, the project will close out an era.

"I want to take (the last roll) with me and somehow make every frame count ... just as a way to honor the memory and always be able to look back with fond memories at how it capped and ended my shooting Kodachrome," McCurry said last week from Singapore, where he has an exhibition at the Asian Civilizations Museum.
Kodak has some awesome shots on display on their website and a slideshow of 43 pics is here.

The full news story is here

The end of an era, I'm not sad, I wasted a lot of kodachrome taking lousy shots.

I love to take a photograph

An end of an era, indeed. It makes me sad for some reason.

I feel a tad nostalgic. But I can't remember the last time I had a roll of film developed.

They say in less then ten years film will be so obscure that when somebody hears the Duran Duran song, 'Girls on Film', they'll say, "Why am I listening to Duran Duran?"

Two minutes later, indeed.

Wow. When GD graduated college, he got the gift of our first digital brick camera. I was in awe of the 1 inch screen on the back.

That was only 8 years ago. And now Kodak film is dead. Unbelievable.

I have ten rolls of unshot Kodachrome Super 8 mm film in my closet. About six years ago, I shot a (really awful) film in that format, and had to have it processed at Dwayne's, the only lab left in the world that can process it. I guess I should do something with the rest of it. (It's expired, so I don't know what kind of results I'll get.)

I have a ton of pictures at my parents house but with digital photography it's SOOOOOOO much cheaper. Went to Paris last year and took 1500+ pictures. Couldn't do that with film.
