Lani and I only go to the drive-in and see movies we wouldn't otherwise see.

The Fast and Furious for example. Also, it needs to be something relatively well lit since there is a lot of light competition. We saw something (I forget what) that was so dark it was like watching the movie with our eyes closed.

I know! It's not too far from where I live in Orange either. I can't wait to see the place. Full report coming soon.

and everyone hangs out in the pool.
The snack bar is open, and they are typically family style movies.... it can get quite cozy.

From an old press release.
"The aquatic center will show two more family-friendly flicks this season, including Disney's "Lilo & Stitch" tonight. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. to give kids and their families a chance to settle in and splash around in the pool before the movie begins at sunset.
The La Mesa dive-in, which began with a big-screen television and about 40 guests, has now graduated to a projector screen and audiences that have topped more than 200. Previous films, such as "Harry Potter" and the "Lion King," drew major crowds, Jackman said.
....
The lifeguard staff increases to seven members during dive-in nights."

Mission Tiki Drive In Trip Report

First off a group on Meetup and the So Cal Drive In people were responsible for putting together the tailgate party at Mission Tiki. Everyone was super friendly and fun. One group brought their super barbeque with propane to bbq bratworst & buns. Besides the on going potluck which made the rounds at the tailgate there was the very swank and extremely tiki Mission Drive In refreshment stand. Although the place is small, it's very quaint and kept very nicely clean from what I could see. The refreshment stand had tiki's galore and had a cool hawaiian theme inside. Food wasn't over priced. In fact the "Sweetheart" deal was one large popcorn, 2 hot dogs, 2 large sodas and a large candy for about $14. Pretty reasonable considering I only paid $6 per person to get in. The butter wasn't that cheap stuff but real butter with real grease! Hot dogs weren't spectacular but still fresh.

The So Cal Drive In people also have an on going relationship with the owners of Mission Tiki and were able to have them give us an extra break during the showing of Grindhouse. The movie didn't start until sundown around 8:30 pm so they happily gave our group a special "intermission". A much needed bathroom break that's for sure!

All in all I loved the whole experience. Much better than I thought it would be. Giving it 2 and a twist.

The idea being that we could watch the movie from the comfort of the pool.

Alas, we never pulled it off, but it was a good dream!
One of the local water parks, White Water does that several times during the summer. The keep the park open later than usual and show a family-friendly movie. I also think this is something that they do on cruise ships.
