Well, I wouldn't go as far as to say WTF, because it makes sense from a biological standpoint in this particular case, but the photos are pretty astounding...

I saw a news bit on that today and I was wondering if it would get coverage on LoT. I really don't see what the big deal about a woman having a baby is. Biology does not care much for legal distinctions.

Because it is a transgender MAN having the baby. People who are transgender often feel that there was a biological f**kup that is being corrected by making their bodies match their gender (or lack thereof... there's a lot more to it than a man wanting to be a woman and vice versa, as in, a lot of gray shades in between). For one thing, the FTM (female-to-male) involved in this has been taking testosterone for many years, I believe had the "top surgery" (double masectomy) -- socially and mentally (and hormonally) this person is male, with the chromosomes and nether regions as a female.

To say that this person is a woman with a mere LEGAL distinction of being male is incredibly trivializing and condescending.

I mean, I guess you could say that you don't see what the big deal of a person who was born with a vagina and uterus having a baby is, but it IS an odd case because of the social aspects of the whole thing.

Yeah, but it's still a person with a functioning (and I'd like to point out, their OWN) uterus. It's not someone who never had a uterus of their own, or who had it removed. I mean, if this was someone who'd been born a man but had a uterus implanted in them, and it worked, THAT would be pretty freaking impressive.

Someone sporting a beard that happens to still have their original plumbing, not so much.

It's a social oddity, not a medical miracle. The first line of the article makes clear that the pregnant person is a transman. It makes one think of how gender and sex are not one and the same (and, as a side note, the changeable nature of gender and/or genitals in relation to marriage, laws [some people would see this as two women who are legally married], the nature of family, etc. etc.) I'm not going to go into a whole dissertation (when I haven't had any coffee today lol).

As someone who was roommates with a trans FTM when he started hormone therapy, that's again very trivializing and condescending. This person is a man, not a bearded lady. Again, it's the social aspect of all this in relation to gender, not any biological miracle aspect (which I agree, it isn't).
