All depends upon the ground that the area sits on. If one is on bedrock, not too much damage. If you are on landfill or a former marsh, you will see lots of damage.

For example, in the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, the Marina District incurred such severe damage because the land was pretty loose, being a lot of landfill on/near very wet areas.

Yes, the USGS has narrowed it down to there being "major quake" (6+ I think) somewhere in California sometime in the next 30 years
