Because the bookmark is too thick? Would it help if the lamp's "member" was ultra thin?

I'd say that would make it much more viable. Leaving it to hang there for a long period wouldn't be good regardless.

Most bookmarks today are awfully thick things and it constantly surprises me that people buy and use them. There are plush bookmarks, for crying out loud. Those metal wedge ones aren't much better. If it's your own book it's your own problem, I guess, though I try to treat mine well.

I know what you mean. It's so much easier to just fold over the pages.
