FARGO – Police here arrested a Moorhead man who allegedly wiped feces on his fiancée’s face during an argument early today.

Sgt. Mark Lykken said the engaged couple got into an argument about money while the man was using the bathroom.

The man allegedly reached into the commode and grabbed feces and wiped it on the woman’s face, he said.

Baltimore Circuit Judge Timothy J. Doory suspended the balance of Ramkissoon's 20-year sentence and ordered her to report to a residential treatment facility for young women. The treatment program includes Bible studywhatWhatWHAAAAT!?!

The judge not only threw out (okay, suspended, whatever) her 20 year sentence and forced her into "treatment" that includes religious indoctrination? Are you fücking kidding me judge?!? Please re-read the First Amendment.

Yes, the Bible will teach her that when God asks you to kill your child, it's only a test. He doesn't really mean it. He will, however, kill the children of your enemies. Ultimately, if really pissed, he will kill his own son, but just for a while, which triggers the favorable portions of his plea deal.

Alex
04-21-2010, 04:45 PM
Well, I always have an issue with any government mandated program that has a religious requirement (but I won't go into detail because I don't want to piss off people here again) so just on that level I've got issues.

That said, if she is of such a strongly religious bent that she starved her child it might be better to wean her on a form of religion that does not starve children rather than asking her to go cold turkey.

Cadaverous Pallor

(Sorry Alex - or at least that's what I think you were alluding to)

Ghoulish Delight
04-21-2010, 09:22 PM
I wouldn't suggest isolating her from religion cold turkey. And I understand that religiosity (whether it's generic bible study, or generic spirituality) are easy and, by some measures, effective shortcuts in a system that simply has to rely on shortcuts to point people towards a better path. And I have no doubt it works for a lot of people. And I know the judge didn't say, "Put her in bible study, that'll learn her!" it just is part of the default program. It just happens that a case like this points out the shortcomings of relying exclusively on those shortcuts. I have no problem with access to religious outlets being part of recovery programs, as long as there's some choice invovled.

but I don't know, it's not like the article has details. There's nothing that says that participation in bible study is compulsory, so maybe it's over reaction, and Alex is right, I can't argue that mainstream religious oxposure probably would still do her some good. But I can't shake the eerie feeling I get when I think of it as treating someone who clearly doesn't process religious thinking very well with more religion.

Multiple sources said a trader entered the letter "b"-as in "billion"-when he or she meant to type "m," for "million," shortly before 2:47 p.m. New York time.Story (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Trading-Error-at-Major-Firm-cnbc-434682061.html?x=0)

Bomb Squad Splattered By Crackerjack (http://www.sanduskyregister.com/articles/2010/05/25/front/doc4bfb41b1dc58d784819193.txt)

HURON

A call about a bomb turned into a crapshoot for the Lorain County Bomb Squad.

Officers found a fizzing homemade bomb planted in a portable toilet near a construction site at Turtle Bay and decided the safest way to detonate it was to shoot at it.

After five shots with a .22 caliber rifle, the bomb exploded, spraying the contents of the toilet everywhere. One of the bomb squad members was covered in feces, according to the police report.

Two Year Old Smokes 40 Cigarettes a Day (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1281538/Smoking-year-old-Ardi-Rizal-40-cigarettes-day.html)
Taking a deep drag on his cigarette while resting on the steering wheel of his truck, he looks like a parody of a middle-aged lorry driver.
But the image covers up a much more disturbing truth: At just the tender age of two, Ardi Rizal's health has been so ruined by his 40-a-day habit that he now struggles to move by himself.
The four-stone Indonesia toddler is certainly far too unfit to run around with other children - and his condition is set to rapidly deteriorate.

So a real life WTF that happened to me today.

A woman came into the pharmacy asking for Epsom salts and digestive enzymes. Ok, no problem. Then she asked if there is anything stronger for cleaning poison out of wounds.
I ask her to explain, long story short, she stepped on a stingray and got stung.
She showed me her foot which was swollen and discolored. The whole foot was red and scaly, the wound was actually black, and her leg had round red marks almost like hives that she said were actually expanding up the leg, they had moved from just above her ankle to half way up her calf in about 10 hours.

I said she should go to the doctor immediately, she said she didn't want to, then asked which digestive enzymes are protein based because the poison is protein based and she was hoping that they would bind together and get out of her system faster.

At this point I washed my hands of the situation and got the pharmacist, who again told her to go to the doctor. She again declined and asked her two questions of him.
He refused to recommend anything except a trip to the doctor and reminded her that stingray venom is how Steve Irwin died. She said "yea but that was in the heart, this is just my foot." he responded "poison is poison you need to be treated."
At this point she asked where another pharmacy was. We told her and repeated that she needed to see a doctor.

So she left, I fully expect if I looked around on line in a few weeks I will find out she either lost the limb or her life all to either save $80 or to prove a point.
People really scare me sometimes

I don't really follow college sports so I can't find a reason for it to bother me other than that it was really easy to remember who's in it. The U. of X and X State U. for WA, OR, CA, and AZ. Plus the two big CA private schools.

She is a transsexual icon who has received attention for entertainment skills."

Further:Her first surgical operation was a rhinoplasty, which occurred at the age of fifteen, a gift from her then-boyfriend, a plastic surgeon. Lepore has had three breast augmentations, her eyes slanted twice, her forehead lifted, her hairline pulled down, and her brow bone reduced. She has also had her forehead, buttocks, and hips enlarged with liquid silicone injections. Most notably, she had her lips enlarged with liquid silicone injections (and subsequently reduced) and has had her lower rib broken and pushed in.[4] In an interview for "The Insider" in 2006, she acknowledged that she spent a lot of money on that transformation.

Monroe County Sheriff's deputies say a man in the Florida Keys had to call 911 when a stuffed water buffalo's head mounted on a wall fell on him and pinned him as he slept in a reclining chair.

I was thinking the same thing. Should God already be aware of this? And if God hasn't stopped it yet, then God is cruel and torturing everyone and or uncaring and or punishing people? And what about all the innocent animals? Surely they would be spared, right?

Apparently not.

Alex

Well, if god hasn't stopped it yet that doesn't necessarily mean he is cruel. There could be a very valid reason this is the best way for things to happen. God works in mysterious ways and all that.

However, if she hasn't stopped it yet only because he hasn't yet been formally asked in the correct way, that doesn't bode well for its character. So, assuming they exist, the only reassuring response from God would be "no."

Maybe this should be in the political thread.

California welfare cards can be used in many casino ATMs
Times review finds that in more than half of the state's casinos and gaming rooms, welfare recipients can get cash from state-issued EBT cards. Officials say they're moving to block such transactions.

The LA Times Story
(http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jun/24/local/la-me-welfare-casinos-20100624)
This kind of stuff really irritates me. I have (mostly) no problem with people receiving welfare who need it, but abuses like this just make me sick. I am sure the majority of the people on welfare don't do this kind of thing (and other abuses), but unfortunately, this is all that most people hear about and draw incorrect conclusions.

I had to go read the story to calm my sense of horror. The first pass on this line I read this as "...to calm my sense of humor."

I wish I had more time to look into this. I want to believe that the airline employee did not tell them to throw it away, that there was just a misunderstanding. But there are so many things wrong here, just based on the story.

The father and/or the older sister (22) might have been more proactive in ascertaining whether they could take the turtle on the plane
Excepting for the possibility of having instructed to throw the turtle in the trash, I feel for the airline employees as they were screwed no matter what. If they allowed the turtle to fly, they faced getting into trouble for that, from the company and/or other passengers.
The gate attendant I'm torn on. It would have been a great customer service outreach to offer to hold and make sure it gets to Dad (although they would have had to bring the turtle to a place before security as Dad wouldn't have been able to get past security without a ticket), but then officially it opens up the airline to liability issues. I lean towards that they should have done it (held for Dad).
I am disturbed that the girls would opt to throw the turtle away rather than wait until the next flight. Regardless of whether they were "instructed" to do so or not, they still made the final decision to throw it away. I have no sympathy for the little girl on that accord alone. In practical terms, if they were going to bring the turtle on board, they should have just smuggled it on once they passed security. I am guessing they decided to be up-front about it and be open with everyone along the way, but that is not the avenue I would have taken.

living in Hawaii, we are very fearful of creatures and critters coming into the state. We have no snakes and rabies. Taking a turtle from one part of the country to another might not be a smart thing especially where kids get tired of them and let them go in the wild.

While it probably could have been handled better at a customer service level, there are possible repercussions.

The part I don't get is that they threw it away figuring it would be easy for dad to find since the bin wasn't that full. How exactly was dad supposed to get to a garbage bin next to the gate without a boarding pass?

California welfare cards can be used in many casino ATMs

Must say, my response is "So what?" They can probably be used at most ATMs in strip clubs, liquor stores, amusement parks, yacht rental stores, etc.

Much better to make them take the money out at the convenience store across the street and then buy lottery tickets with the money. Money's fungible, if you want to insist that only certain things be purchased with assistance then open government run stores that only have those items and give people a checklist.

Rebecca Helm called their father, and he began driving back to the airport. She asked an AirTran employee to make arrangements with her father to look after the pet until he could get there, but the employee refused.
<snip>
"We don't have the personnel or the facilities to care for people's pets," White said.

Rebecca asked if throwing the pet away would allow for them to get back on the flight, White said. The gate agent did not tell the sisters what to do but said they could not get on the plane with the turtle, White said.

"At no time did any AirTran Airways crew member order or suggest that they put the turtle in the trash," he said.Ugh, what automaton bull****. Just put the cage behind your desk until the father gets back to the airport. It's small, contained, quiet, and you don't have to do ANYTHING for it. Says the sister of someone who's been fired because he broke a technical corporate rule that hurt no one, but still got him fired. If a stranger came up to you and said, "Hey, I'm in a pickle because I've broke some of your employers' rules [i.e., sneaking the turtle through security in the first place]. Do you mind risking your family's income to cover for my rule-breaking? Thanks!" how much sympathy would you feel for them?

To say you didn't tell her to throw it away is semantics crap - she had a whole flight waiting on her, wtf was she going to do??
Take the offer to wait 2 hours for their dad to arrive and take the later flight at no charge?

These girls were trying to do something they weren't allowed to do, got caught, were given an out and refused it. I don't see how the airline employees are to blame here.

Alex
06-25-2010, 01:29 PM
I agree. I'd refuse to take responsibility for someone else's pet just on liability grounds. They were offered a way to resolve the situation and get on a later flight at no additional charge. That seems good enough to me.

If anything, the error was in standing there while they threw a living animal in the trash to get back on the plane. Disposing of the animal and reboarding the plane should not have been an option allowed to them and since splitting up would have required a minor being left unattended somewhere they all would have been subject to it.

All the while I would have been apologizing profusely that they'd been allowed to get that far with the animal without the issue being raised (I'm not sure if the security gate should have caught it or not) but I'd still have very much been in the "life sucks, we'll put you on the next plane" camp.

I understand toeing the line but this is just a stupid case.GD said pretty much what I would have said, but I would add that this isn't just any every-day company we're talking about, this is an airline. Airlines are under a LOT of scrutiny about the smallest details. While on the outside, one could argue that a tiny little turtle isn't a security threat, ANYTHING out of the ordinary is suspicious.

I am on the side of the actions of the airline employees on this - they did not wrong in my eyes.

Who are you blaming for this hated thing, though? Large companies that get sued dozens of times per day and so have a certain motivation to just avoid the more obvious stupid suits that could be brought or the people who file stupid lawsuits all of the time?

But I'm curious, if one of your library patrons came in saying "I have errands to run and can't take my turtle here with me. Would you hold him? I promise my husband will be along to pick him up before too long" would you really say "Sure, no problem, I'll just put that guy in the back here I'm sure it'll all work out."

No, I meant rabies...you know, the disease that caused Old Yeller to be put down.

We are supposed to have strict agricultural rules. The reason I put the two in the same sentence is that they current to do not reside in Hawaii (at least that is known about). If you turn in an illegal animal like a snake, hissing cockroach, Madagascar gecko among a small list, you gain amnesty. But, if they catch you it can be up to $25,000 fine and a year in jail. Dogs and cats which can carry rabies used to spend 120 days in quarantine, but now if your animal was immunized 30 days before arrival, then you can take the animal right from the airport.

Lots of people, esp military didn't have the roughly $1500 to put the animal in for the 120 days. Due to the number of reptiles we have, we buy our super worms (like a meal worm, but with a softer shell - the ones we get are about an inch or more long) 1,000 at a time. Susan picked them up yesterday and left them on the couch for me to deal with when I came home (she doesn't do live food).

By the time I came home, they had chewed a hole not only in the canvas bag they come in, but also the plastic grocery bag that the canvas bag was in. I found about 50 of these worms crawling around. Susan found another one today.

Does pot continue to be illegal because it keeps cops employed? This article (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/07/03/strapped-police-turn-marijuana-busts-cash/#content) would seem to suggest that may be a factor.

The reason is simple: If the California lawman steps up his pursuit of marijuana growers, his department is eligible for roughly half a million dollars a year in federal anti-drug funding, helping save some jobs. The majority of the funding would have to be used to fight pot. Marijuana may not be the county's most pressing crime problem, the sheriff says, but "it's where the money is."

A few pithy quotes from the letter:

"deserted" "narcissistic" "cowardly betrayal" "shocking act of disloyalty" "heartless and callous"

Sounds to me like the bitter ravings of an owner who just saw his teams value plummet.

Yeah, I agree. There's nothing wrong with a player going where he will be paid the most or feels it is the best fit for what he wants to accomplish whether in the sport or in life.

That said, the way he's handled the process of doing that does quality, in my opinion, as "narcissistic" and "callous." I didn't see it, so maybe it was great television, but I can't believe that ESPN handed over the network for an hour for him to make the announcement.
