And my point was that there are plenty of examples of American adaptations that are not "horrific". You may not be a fan of some of them (like I said, I'm no fan of Three's Company, but that doesn't mean I think it's horrific) and an article that claims that "everything" that's been adapted is worthless seems like a pretty lame article.
As with any show, the quality has to do with the effort and creativity that goes into it, not with its origin.

Trying to clone something generally fails (in my opinion). I could go with "inspired by" but just doing it all over again?
Skip it. Maybe some of them have worked, and I'd maybe like to see a comparison with the original.
Same reason I hate movie sequels.
I don't mind remakes. There are a lot of bad remakes. But there are also a lot of good (such as the recent Karate Kid) or even great (such as The Maltese Falcon and The Wizard of Oz) remakes. Many well respected movies and TV shows are remakes of foreign titles.
If an attempt to redo it as an American version fails, oh well. Nothing lost except somebody else's money. If it succeeds then we all win.
What'll likely happen is it will be just as lame as the original (yes, Dr. Who is lame; yes, this is based on watching only two very lame episodes; however, my taste is perfect so I'm right) and yet somehow this time that will be held against it.

I love Doctor Who and not only because I've been watching it since the 80s.... :) I love that it's corny and quirky and strange.
What's likely to happen is they'll try to mimic the quirkiness but get it entirely and boringly wrong.

For me the difference is I never saw most of the British versions of those shows so I was happy to watch the US versions. Dr. Who and I go way back. I just can't see US producers doing it justice. I expect they'll do something against canon like having an actual effects budget.

I have oft thought of starting a Stupid Criminals thread. Until I do, I shall post this story here.
Thief Temporarily Makes Off With iPhone During GPS Tracking Demo
The San Francisco Chronicle relates (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/crime/detail?entry_id=68288) the story of a thief who earlier this week briefly made off with an iPhone snatched right from a woman's hand in the city's South of Market neighborhood, not knowing that the phone was being used in a demonstration of real-time GPS tracking. The thief was apprehended about ten minutes later with the help of the location tracking.Kahn said he had asked an assistant, Jordan Sturm, to take his phone out on the sidewalk so he could track her location on his laptop. Seconds after she left, though, a curious thing happened. She appeared -- according to Alert & Respond -- to be running at high speed down the street.
But Sturm no longer had the phone. After she hurried back into the office, she called police and the company relayed the phone's ever-changing location to officers.Alert & Respond (http://www.covialabs.com/products/alert_respond) is a product from Covia Labs designed for first responders such as law enforcement agencies to enable real-time location tracking and to permit officers to share various communication methods across mobile device platforms and agencies.Source (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2010/07/21/thief-temporarily-makes-off-with-iphone-during-gps-tracking-demo/)

There must be some way this is dealt with in HI...Brad?
You still own the land (assuming the rules haven't changed in the last decade or so and you owned it in the first place, a lot of Hawaii property is leasehold meaning you own the house but lease the land), it will just be difficult for you to do anything with it for a very long time (though there are parts of the 1990 eruption that are already being developed over). If I'm remembering correctly, it is somewhat common for people who's land is lost to lava to donate it back to the county/state in order to get away from paying property taxes.
As for the property losses, you can get homeowner's insurance that covers damage and loss of use. There's a regular debate about how much the state should do to encourage/discourage development in risky areas. It's pretty much like the debates you see in flood prone areas and just like the Federal Flood Insurance Program is criticized as encouraging risky development there's a state insurance program in Hawaii that does the same thing for people who aren't able to find private insurers for their property.
At least that's the way of it as I remember from when I lived there and discussed it with classmates who lived on the Big Island. I'm sure Brad will set me straight if needed.

Holy fvck this is disturbing (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38880820/ns/us_news-life/).I agree - they were trying to assure that overall 50% of the Class Presidents were black when blacks only represent about 1/3 of the population.

What was I saying?
...
Though I'm always skeptical when these kinds of stories from local school districts hit national media. There's usually some vital details missing for the sake of good story telling.
As it turns out, Kevy is right. The full policy states that the listed positions would alternate year-to-year. So while only whites could be president this year, only blacks next year. So yes, 50% guaranteed.
The policies were put in place 30 years ago to enforce integration. Now with this scrutiny, the district agrees that it is outdated, inappropriate, and (hopefully) unnecessary. They are dropping the policy.
ETA: still unsettling that it required national attention to get them to make the right decision. However, it's gotta be hard to see the forest for the trees when you're in the thick of it and know that, 30 years ago, there simply would have been no integration without such policies, so if it's been working for 30 years...
Are they the only school down there doing it?
What's odd to me is that they'd do that but not mandate equal representation. Why have 8 positions out of 12 be black or white in a given year; do they have parliamentary procedures requiring a 2/3 supermajority? How have they treated students who aren't white or black? Presumably that's happened at some point in the last 30 years.
Of course, this ignores the fact that having class political offices is stupid to begin with and really stupid in the sixth grade.

It's traumatic enough to have to put your dog down. it's even more shocking to wake up and find the animal you though was dead still sitting at its food bowl the next day, waiting for you to feed it.Whole doggone story (http://www.pawnation.com/2010/10/15/dog-wakes-up-after-being-euthanized-shocks-owner/).

What makes Jobs a "douche?"Jobs, speaking to financial analysts during a conference call, dismissed 7-inch tablets as "tweeners" saying they were "too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with an iPad".
He suggested makers of 7-inch screens "include sandpaper so users can sand down their fingers" to be able to tap onscreen keys.
Why not just let products compete instead of telling everyone what to think?

I am consumed with lust for a 64Gb iPad, you betcha.
Apple products are cool, are cutting edge and they work. They're also spendy which is why I do not have more Apple toys than I do (like the iPad).
I do not find Apple's marketing any less offensive than the billion other products on the market. In reality, imo, I find most of their ads and marketing to be clever and fun and appealing.
Where I find Steve Jobs to be a real douchebag is this: Jackling House Mansion (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/ontheblock/detail?entry_id=73921). Granted, I do not know all the details, but the once beautiful house was allowed to sit open to all weathers and deteriorate while he fought with the preservationists who wanted to save it. It's a pity they could not come to terms to move the house off the property.
Here are some more cool urban spelunking shots of Jackling House (http://scotthaefner.com/photos/place/Jackling+House/) from one of my favorite urban spelunking photographers.

You did make me look back at the article (I've forgotten the RIM guy already) and realized I forgot to quote the douchiest part.
Addressing concerns that the iPad had missed it 4.8 million unit target by nearly 20 per cent, selling 4.1 million units, Jobs seemed to lay the blame at the feet of rival tablet makers for not quickly bringing worthy products to markets.Really, Steve Jobs, Really? I mean, Really? [/sethandamy] You can't top the doucheness here. "We failed to sell enough of our product because you other guys suck." Wow.
He has a potentially valid point there. Whether what Jobs was saying was douchey or not it up to the listener, but I can't say that it was unusually douchey for someone in his position talking about markets. Possibly a bit more aggressive than you'd usually hear but not out of bounds.
Doesn't mean he's right (though he does have a decent track record in this area). Personally I'd be all over a 7" iPad. I look forward to the custom cases that'll be made for using an iPad on one side then flipping it and using a Kindle on the other.

For some reason, people have been down on the "cult of Apple" when Jobs was in charge, when he wasn't in charge, and when he came back again. They attacked Apple fans when their computer market share was 3% and when they dominate the smartphone market.

Hmm, perhaps you'd be less disturbed if you weren't taking a shot at Steve Jobs as also a shot at you? And perhaps people would be less down on the cult-of-apple if they didn't take any questioning of apple as a personal slight against them.
Well, I have no real ill will towards Apple products (though I've never been particularly enamored of them). But Steve Jobs does seem to be something of a douche as a person, which has little to do with the quality of the company products.
Personally I just am perplexed by people who reviled Microsoft as evil then have orgasms over each product rumor while Apple does things that are, to my view anyway, worse (in terms of how they try to control information, control products, and control the secondary marketplace). How evil would MS have been if they had a major and growing share of the handset marketplace and then used their position to try and destroy Flash (regardless of how wright or wrong that decision would be)?
I find the whole platform war silly but really, are the slobbering blow jobs and senseless Windows hate from Apple fanatics really any worse than non fanboys mocking Apple?

I don't have a problem with people who like Apple stuff. I like Apple stuff and I wish I could afford a Mac laptop so I could cut things on it with FinalCut.
But I have a problem when a people tell me, "You should buy ____" or "You should only buy _____" or "Everybody should have a _____". Like I've gotten lectured about how I should drive a Prius. "It's the right thing to do." That kinda bugs me. And, yes, it definitely depends on who is saying it to me. Strangers, acquaintances, commercials = I totally ignore. Family (some of them) and friends = I will listen to the suggestion. Whenever I see someone all high and mighty talking about their Prius or their Escalade, I just want to tell them both to shove their vehicles up their asses.
I will use myself as an example. I like the Dave Matthews Band, maybe you've heard. But I don't find it necessary to see them 20 times a year, buy all of their merchandise, all of their live CDs, etc. Daveheads bragging about the fact that they've seen him 80 times overloads my circuits.
I don't know if that makes any sense but that's what I think. I also give the cold shoulder (maybe only at first) to something/someone who is wildly popular. Justin Bieber (holy crap, give me a break) fans can be annoying at times but I actually like one of his songs.
And as far as doucheyness goes, I find Bill Gates to be a douche but not Steve Jobs. Maybe because I get so annoyed with Windows at times.

Again, I did not say that. Apple is not a bad company, but neither is it the great shining paragon of technology some people make it out to be.
Also, there is nothing wrong with being a loyal customer. But worshiping a particular brand like a cult, and defending it religiously, is beyond being a fan.
3) People shouldn't take it personally when you attack the thing they like and in the same gesture basically refer to them as sheep
Who's attacking Apple? Not me. Apple makes good products - popular products. See my response to #2 above. Yes, I did point out that they do have problems (just like any other company), but that's hardly attacking them.

Their customer service is a joke. On the other hand, my HP desktop with Windows 7 runs like a dream.,
I'd consider your point-by-point response to my defensive answer to be a little duplicitous or at least, to borrow a couple of popular words, "bullying" and "douche-y".
And believe me, I do understand.
You're way over-reacting, I'd say. If he's attacking anything directly with those words, it is a certain type of Apple-product groupie.
And if saying that Apple products aren't perfect and the end-all-be-all is the same as attacking Apple then that's a low bar and definitely one that even casual Apple afficianados have engaged in with much enthusiasm.
And Microsoft may be a douchier company than Apple, but I'm hard pressed to imagine the argument that Bill Gates is a douchier person (over say the last 15 yeass) than Steve Jobs. At least on the level where any of us know either of them. That's not to say Steve Jobs is a horrible person, just that Bill Gates seems to be a pretty good one.

Reminds me of one of my favorite Sparks songs: "Here Comes Bob"
lyrics -
When I spot a driver worth a second glance
Foot to floorboard, impact soon achieved
Here comes Bob!
I ain't subtle in my ways of making friends
Girl, this rubbled mess was caused by my neglect
Of course, I'll pay and by the way, my dear
Here comes Bob!
I ain't subtle in my ways of making friends
Sometimes I'll stoop to hitting
Two-door coupes without the frills
But that's just for casual acquaintances,
For stripped-down thrills
Your car, girl -or mine?
It doesn't matter, doesn't matter, no
But for affairs with staying power
I go after limousines
It's always nice if something big
Is acting as your go-between
And for group encounters I'll hit buses,
Mobile homes, or trains to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
It's hard to make acquaintances in our big town
Most eyes stare at nothing much at all
But here comes Bob!
I ain't subtle in my ways of making friends
Friends, acquaintances!
Instant adulation comes to some at birth
Born to queens or corporate entities
But here comes Bob!
Someday they'll put me away
I'll think back on active days
Most were worth the minor scars
Some were worth the damaged cars
And the judge will say to me:
"Bob, you've got a bad means to a worthwhile end"
Well, here comes Bob!

I don't recall ever calling myself a "diehard Apple fanboy" - but if you need to reduce me to a label in order to justify your boorish behavior, so be it.
Actually, the way I recall this particular conversation going (and I can scroll back, so I know I'm correct) is that there was a funny headline linked to an article about Jobs. CP said that he was a "douche". Kevy engaged her and asked why he was a douche for his promoting his product , and CP responded that the various products should compete on their own ("Why not just let products compete instead of telling everyone what to think?"). Then Betty took a jab at Apple fanboys. I then sarcastically suggested that Apple suspend all their promotion and advertising, and the next post - your first post in this topic, was a direct response to my comment (you quoted me), and was filled with vitriolic sarcasm and misspelling.

Yes, my original post was in response to yours, but it wasn't aimed at you personally. And while you may have never called yourself a "diehard Apple fanboy" you sure as hell act like one. You responded to criticism of Apple as if you yourself had been personally insulted. I wasn't being "hateful" of Apple and apple cultists. I was trying to poke gentle fun at, what I see as, the absurd worship of all things Apple. You then tried to stir the flames by hurling barbs at Walt Disney in an obvious attempt to anger Disney fans. It didn't work, because no one here is as worshipful of Disney as you appear to be of Apple. It is you, BTW, who started with the personal insults, not me.
There is nothing wrong with brand loyalty; but loyalty to the point that you get angry at the merest criticism (whether justified or not) of that brand is way over the top.
I don't hate Apple. Apple is no better, or worse, than any other company. If that statement makes you angry, and you feel personally insulted by it, then it is you that has a problem, my friend, not me.

Wheaton's Law
During his keynote speech at the 2007 PAX (Penny Arcade Expo), Wheaton made a note about sportsmanship when playing games online. It has since become known as Wheaton's Law, which states: "Don't Be a Dick!". This was intended to apply to life in general, not just online gaming.

Empty Pennsylvania house so overrun by rats that they measured 1-foot deep will be demolished
NEW BRIGHTON, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania home will be demolished because it is so overrun with rats that they measure about a foot deep in spots. Officials in Pulaski Township said the home has been a problem in the neighborhood for about a year.
Neighbors called the township last week to complain when they saw rats coming out of the home.
Officials said the home's owner used to breed dogs there. The woman, who is bankrupt, moved out in August and her husband is in a nursing home.
The Beaver County Times reported that an exterminator hopes to kill about 95 percent of the rats before the home is demolished Friday. Officials will erect a perimeter around the home to try and prevent any rats that survive from going into neighboring homes. The original story (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/wire/sns-ap-us-odd-overrun-by-rats,0,2114817.story).

Teacher Bans Students From Bringing Pencils To School (http://newsblaze.com/story/20101119111941reye.nb/topstory.html)A Massachusetts school district superintendent said a memo banning sixth graders from carrying pencils was written without district approval.
North Brookfield School District interim Superintendent Gordon Noseworthy said Wendy Scott, one of two sixth-grade teachers at North Brookfield Elementary School, did not get approval from administrators before sending the memo to all sixth-grade parents, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported Thursday.
The memo said students would no longer be allowed to bring writing implements to school. It said pencils would be provided for students in class and any students caught with pencils or pens after Nov. 15 would face disciplinary action for having materials "to build weapons."
Noseworthy said the memo does not represent district policy.

Next time you want to complain about your neighbors remember, it could be worse. (http://www.wtop.com/?nid=104&sid=2189858)
ESCONDIDO, Calif. -
Neighbors gasped when authorities showed them photos of the inside of the Southern California ranch-style home: Crates of grenades, mason jars of white, explosive powder and jugs of volatile chemicals that are normally the domain of suicide bombers.
The property is so dangerous and volatile that that they have no choice but to burn the home to the ground
Some 40 experts on bombs and hazardous material from across the country and at least eight national laboratories are working on the preparations.
They have analyzed wind patterns to ensure the smoke will not float over homes beyond the scores that will be evacuated. They have studied how fast the chemicals can become neutralized under heat expected to reach 1800 degrees and estimate that could happen within 30 minutes, which means most of the toxins will not even escape the burning home, Newman said.
The county has installed 18 sensors that will measure the amount of chemicals in the smoke and send the data every two minutes to computers monitored by the fire and hazardous material departments.
Experts also have mapped how far the plume will travel and predict it will not go beyond Interstate 15. They calculate that if there is an explosion, it would probably throw the debris only about 60 feet.
"It certainly would not be a detonation that would level a neighborhood," Newman said.
Crews are clearing brush, wood fences and other debris that could cause the blaze to spread beyond the property in a region hit by wildfires in recent years. They also are building a 16-foot-high fire-resistant wall with a metal frame between the property and the nearest home, which will be coated with a fire-resistant gel.
Firefighters, who will remain 300 feet away, are placing hose lines in the front and back yards and will have a remote-controlled hose aimed at the nearest neighbor's home. Ambulances also will be parked nearby.
The Sheriff's Bomb Squad will ignite the fire remotely with a sequenced series of incendiary devices, Newman said.
Nothing planned in this much detail ever goes well.

Kevy I agree with you. They're erecting a 16 ft metal fence to protect the neighbors property. I don't think they have any idea what's really in there. But then from photos the house looks like a hoarders house and it's not safe for them to go in there and poke around.
I feel bad for the homeowner. He was renting to this guy. So his home gets burned to the ground.

Yeah, like we needed any more proof that all things Smurf are evil (http://www.wtop.com/?nid=108&sid=2194248).
"The Smurfs' Village," a game for the iPhone and other Apple gadgets, was released a month ago and quickly became the highest-grossing application in the iTunes store. Yet it's free to download.
So where does the money come from? Kelly Rummelhart of Gridley, Calif., has part of the answer. Her 4-year-old son was using her iPad to play the game and racked up $66.88 in charges on her credit card without knowing what he was doing.
She counts herself lucky that her son didn't start tapping on another purchase button, like the "wheelbarrow" of Smurfberries for $59.99.
