Woman tries to kill mice, shoots self (http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20080708/NEWS05/807080371/1350&title=Would_be_mice_killer_shoots_self)

The bullet went through the woman's right kneecap, then hit keys hanging on the belt loop of a 42-year-old man in the trailer, officials said. The bullet glanced off the keys and tore a hole in the man's pants.

The bullet grazed the man's groin before stopping in his coin pocket, where it was recovered for evidence, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Telephonist: "Janet's on holidays"
Stoat: "Oh...Ok, can I speak to someone else in her department?"
Telephonist: "Well, let me see, hmmm…Nicole”
Stoat: “Yes, Ok, I’ll speak to Nicole”
Telephonist: “I’ll put you on hold…”

[heavy metal din rattles my fillings for 5 minutes]

Not Nicole: “Hi, this is the Communications Department”
Stoat: “Hi Nicole, I need some legal advice”
Not Nicole: “This is not Nicole, it’s Julie”
Stoat: “Sorry Julie, I was told that I’d be speaking to Nicole”
Julie: “Nicole doesn’t work here any more”
Stoat: “Well I actually wanted to speak to Janet, but she’s on holidays”
Julie: “No she’s not – she’s in today”
Stoat: “Oh good – may I speak with her?”
Julie: “Sorry, Janet’s on another call right now”
Stoat: “Well, I can hold until she’s available”
Julie: “I’ll put you on hold…”

[heavy metal din rattles my fillings for 5 minutes]

Not Julie: “How can I help you?”
Stoat: “Hi Julie?...I was waiting for Janet”
Not Julie: “This not Julie, this is Christina…Julie has gone to lunch”
Stoat: “Christina, may I please speak to Janet?”
Christina: “Janet is on holidays”
Stoat: “But Julie told me that Janet was on another call”
Christina: “Look..can someone else help you? Nicole is available”
Stoat: “But Julie told me that Nicole doesn’t work there anymore”
Christina: “I’ll put you on hold…”

[heavy metal din rattles my fillings for 10 minutes]

Stoat: “Hi Christina?...what’s the deal with Nicole?”
Not Christina: “This is not Christina, this is Trudy”
Stoat: “Sorry Trudy, I was after Janet”
Trudy: “Janet’s knocked off for the day”
Stoat: “Well when should I call back?”
Trudy: “Janet will be on holidays for two weeks…
Stoat: [silence]

Trudy: "Can someone else help you?”
Stoat: “God might have – but I think he has forsaken me – click”

Dear GC,

Bear and I watched a DVD called "Hostel" by Qentin Tarrantino. I spent most of the movie peering through my fingers or watching the reflection upside-down in the glass-topped coffee table.

If you require instruction on "incredibly gruesome things to do to yourself and others with a chainsaw" then rent this sucker. Oh...and I reckon MythBusters could easily demonstrate that an individual could top 'emselves quite easily...after all, we are talking about a couple of feet of totally exposed fast moving metal teeth.

Chainsaws scare the pants of me...

Love and hugs,

Minor point of clarification. Hostel is an Eli Roth film. I suspect a Tarantino version would have more artistic value and not be just torture porn (and I use that in the cinematic rather than actual pornography sense to avoid the long conversation that happened last time I said torture porn).

Dear Alex,

Maybe there are different versions out there...I could have sworn I saw Qentin's name on the screen. I will say this though: apart from the gratuitous gore, the plot actually held together quite well (better than most body parts anyway) and actually led to a reasonable resolution, which I quite liked.

Hugs,

Tarantino was an "Executive Producer" on Hostel, and the film was a "Quentin Tarantino presents..." feature.

So I understand why Stoat would think it was a QT flick.

Well, as this IS the WTF thread, this comment won't be out of place:

They say that Mr Phyall was "vulnerable". This is the same guy that had a fully operational chainsaw in a unit. I'm glad that I didn't try to sell him Girl Guide cookies or Nutrimetics.

It listed the possible cause of death of Mr Phyall as ‘complete transaction of the neck’.

Naahhh...that couldn't have possibly been the cause. Had they said "complete transaction of the bank" I'd have cause for concern, 'cos my bank never gets it right.

An ambulance service spokesman said: ‘We were called to an address in Bishopstoke to reports to a “concerns for welfare.”

Well, when the caller said "Mr Phyall had lost his marbles" they weren't whistling Dixie (and neither, it seems, was he). On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate this an 11 in terms of "concerns for welfare".

I'll be heading off now...

I am occasionally disturbed by the amount of thought you put into these kind of things.

Like I've said in the past, while I've never come remotely close to committing suicide, I do think about it several times a day. My own death fascinates me. I can't see a high cliff without wondering what it would be to fall off it. A anthill without wondering how it would be to be eaten by army ants. A copse of trees in a twilight park without considering a violent mugging that leaves me mortally wounded but with enough life left to wander somewhere and die dramatically in the arms of a friend.

I find it really odd to think that there are people who don't think about such things all of the time. I think about good things too.

Maybe I just think too much and too fast.

Well, we just got to experience the aftermath of someone's apparent suicide (or, perhaps it was a murder). The guy died (or chose to die) on the eve of a heat wave few days later his neighbors just couldn't figure out where that smell was coming from. They figured it out - or the police did. We stepped into the elevator soon after they had brought the body down. It was not comforting finding out why the elevator smelled.

Humm, I don't know. However I'm fairly sure I would have a lot of company. Were I depressed enough to end it all, I'd take all of the SOB's that helped make me that way along for the ride.

I guess it's a good thing I'm a happy guy.

I find it really odd to think that there are people who don't think about such things all of the time. I think about good things too.I have similar thoughts, every single day. Bike riding in traffic can do this to me more than anything. Just one swerve, by me or by the cars, and it's all over - or I'm at least horribly crippled. I'm never truly tempted, of course.

An Orange City Council member was killed in a head on collision a couple years back. Lady was drunk and crossed the meridian. She was barely injured. He was in his 30's with a daughter in kindergarten, a local guy who'd worked hard for his community. The entire city mourned. Luck. Bad, bad luck.

I'm a happy person too. :) Even so, (or perhaps, because) these thoughts are around all the time, reminding me how lucky I am, every single day.

Woman has 140-pound tumor removed
Oregon mom was told for years she had to lose weight, but she couldn’t
REDMOND, Ore. - Throughout her life, Linda Rittenbach has struggled with her weight.

“You get bigger and bigger and bigger,” said Rittenbach, who has two grown children. “And then you go to your doctor and they tell you, ‘You need to lose weight — you’re fat!’”

Rittenbach had tried every diet, every workout, but the pounds wouldn’t go away. Doctors suggested weight loss surgery.

“But something in my head just said, ‘No, don’t do that,’” Rittenbach said last week.

It wasn’t until Rittenbach went to a different doctor this spring for flu-like symptoms that she found out what was really wrong.

Doctors told her a 140-pound cancerous tumor — a rare kind of liposcarcoma — was growing near her stomach. They said it had likely been growing for 15 to 20 years.Full story (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25680599/)

Something very similar happened to a friend of mine. She had complained to her doctor (she had Cigna) for several years about problems she had. The doctor just kept telling her to lose weight. She switched her insurance to Kaiser and told her new doctor about her problems. The new doctor immediately ordered tests. They found a 10 lbs tumor in her abdomen. They removed it, and she’s fine now. If she hadn’t switched to Kaiser she could be dead by now.

Maybe if Bornieo was launched somehow... like with a cannon...But the launch can't kill him - that needs to occur when he hits the spire.

And it needs to be a fairly vertical impact on the tip of the spire so that he will be successfully impaled. So, the flight path would need to be a fairly (vertically) steep parabola.

[Several meetings interrupted this post; wouldn't surprise me if math went astray at some point]

Just a warped point of view, but mathematics (or one if its applied offspring) is, for me, frequently what puts the fun in.

So.

The Matterhorn is 147 feet tall or 44.8 meters. The castle at it's tallest is 77 feet (23.5 meters). Let's say that the short spire near the Matterhorn is half that or 11.5 meters).

It will take 2.6 seconds to fall those 33.3 meters. To travel 276 lateral feet (84.1 meters) in that time you'd have to jump out with a speed (ignoring wind resistance) of 72 miles per hour.

The Matterhorn is 147 feet tall or 44.8 meters. The castle at it's tallest is 77 feet. Let's say that the short spire near the Matterhorn is half that or 11.5 meters).

Jumping straight out from the top of the Matterhorn (to maximize lateral velocity) it will take 2.6 seconds to fall those 33.3 meters. To travel 276 feet (84.1 meters) in that time you'd have to jump out with a speed (ignoring wind resistance) of 72 miles per hour.

Geebus. Story says the driver and his kid made it out. Freaking lucky, the corner looked like it tore through the driver's side.

Not nearly as dramatic, a couple years ago I saw an SUV drive into a parking garage. They either forgot that they had one of those roof rack mounted camping containers on or didn't realize how tall that made their car. They whacked the hell out of the hanging bar with the max clearance sign, knocking it off its chain and ultimately wedged themselves in pretty good against the ceiling of the garage. Pretty amusing to watch.

TALLINN, Estonia - Authorities say a skydiver was killed when she walked into a spinning aircraft propeller at an airfield in Estonia.

The incident happened as a group of skydivers were boarding the turboprop plane in the western town of Rapla.

Kulli Kivioja of the regional prosecutor's office said the 29-year-old victim died instantly after she was hit by one of the twin-engine aircraft's propellers. Kivioja said Saturday's incident is under investigation.

Last night Gary says "Well at least she has us beat!" I peaked over his shoulder and had to laugh, yes thank god she has us beat!! Although I can't afford the 16 at the moment but luckily the babes are big enough to find homes. Which will cut the population in half, then we can try to trap the one to get her fixed and Gary has made friends with the other so we can grab her too!

I can't imagine trying to feed them all. Also why not just fix them. We always end up with some new mother cat or litter at our front door every year but all our cats are fixed, as they should be! The first year that we had two litters dropped off we had to have the feral cat coalition help us out with catching some but they were all caught fixed and given shots. It's not cheap having 9 cats fixed even with their help!

'Fat Princess' game stirs up heavy debate
Feminists argue the concept is hostile, others say 'lighten up'

Sony rolled out "LittleBigPlanet," "God of War 3" and "Resistance 2" at its E3 press conference. And what is everyone talking about? A cartoony game from a no-name studio about a fat princess.

Why? Well, it isn’t the cartoony art style (although it is kind of cute). And it’s not the unique twist it takes on the old capture-the-flag game mechanic. No, what’s got everyone talking about “Fat Princess,” the forthcoming PlayStation Network game from Seattle’s Dark Star Industries is that the core objective involves stealing a princess and stuffing her with cake until she’s too fat to move. The whole story (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25939266/).

ATHENS - A 31-year-old Greek beheaded his girlfriend and carried her head around the popular tourist island of Santorini before he was arrested, police said on Sunday.

I have no problem with cloning, I just don't see the appeal in this form.

There is an amazing story on an old episode of This American Life about a guy in Texas who had this prized giant bull that starred in movies and was the featured attraction at children's birthday parties. When it died, he agreed to participate in a Texas A&M (I think) experiment to clone him. The resulting bull had a completely different personality.

Capt Jack
08-05-2008, 09:22 AM
its not the cloning that disgusts me. thats science.

$50k would help a sh!tload of the overabundance of animals already on the planet, rather than funding new ways to create even more for delusional elitests

(the above is personal opinion only and was not meant to incite anger amongst the clones in our midst)

Alex
08-05-2008, 09:29 AM
Oh, I agree that the money could be better spent but that is almost always the case. If you have $50k extra floating around there are far better ways to spend it than on any form of animal care.

I guess that I'd say the money thing disgusts me the same way most $40k cars disgust me. Sure, they're neat but how do priorities get so skewed that anybody buys them?

Morrigoon
08-05-2008, 09:44 AM
Now, I see this as using rich people's money/desires as a means of advancing the science. Rather than created unwanted creatures purely for academic reasons who will then be summarily destroyed, they get to create wanted, desirable animals, whose characteristics are well-known, and invite easy comparison to their originals, who will likely live out their lives as valued, wanted creatures. Meanwhile, scientists working on them get their research funded so they can perfect methods and move closer toward real-world medical applications that can advance the cause of mankind.

What's so disgusting about that?

Alex

To me it is and if I wanted to I could afford cars that cost twice that.

But my point was that everybody has different priorities on what is acceptable spending, particularly when it comes to luxuries such as automobile features and pet owning. Pretty much all money not spent on bare necessities of staying alive could be spent better by somebody else's priorities.

Woman Locked Out Mom, kidnapped 5 kids

Authorities issued an Amber Alert Wednesday after a woman disappeared with five children she had taken in when they were displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

SNIP

But then something changed, she said. On July 13, the children's mother called Precinct 4 Constables "to report an acquaintance of hers was being reluctant to let her see her own children," said Capt. Paul Staton.

Waters said Tavey apparently locked Alphonse out of the house and then took off with the kids.

"Basically, she took in the family, including the mom, and then when it came time for her to give the kids back to their mom she refused and she left the area," she said. "Nobody knows where she is right now. That's why we're doing the Amber Alert. That's the last resort."

Spelling Bee Finalist Eliminated on the Word “Girlfriend”

Christopher Heck, a finalist at last week’s Scripps National Spelling Bee, was eliminated when he was unable to spell the word “girlfriend.” Bee champion David Tidmarsh then clinched the title by successfully spelling “autochthonous,” a word meaning “indigenous.”The whole story (http://www.sportspickle.com/features/volume3/2004-0609-spellingbee.html)

I was amused by the mother who said: “Last year in the Illinois state competition he was knocked out when he failed to spell ‘popularity’ correctly,” she said. “It was a word he had no concept of or experience with.”

As opposed to the person who won the contest with a word he uses every day: "autochthonous"

One thing I never quite understood about body mods is whether the person has considered the life-long ramifications. In particular, I am thinking about the readily visible mods (such as the one above).

By no means am I against body mods: I even have one (minor) one myself. But it is hidden and not in a place that an employer would see it. People who do excessive facial mods (particularly the very permanent ones - pierces can be removed and often will heal with no long-term affects other than a possible scar) I believe will live to regret the mods. I could be wrong, but that is my $0.02.

Please Don't Stroke The Crocodiles (http://www.metro.co.uk/news/world/article.html?in_article_id=269817&in_page_id=64)

A drunk was ripped to pieces by crocodiles in front of horrified tourists.

Eight crocs tore at the man at wildlife park, the Lake Carpintero sanctuary near Tampico, Mexico, The Sun reported.

The man was dragged into the water by one of the crocs after he leaned over a rail to stroke it.

The others then tore him to pieces in the attack. He was not able to be identified.

If it happened in front of "horrified tourists", then surely, somebody got the whole thing on video.

The fighting started this week when Coach Wilfred Vidro refused a directive by league officials to replace 9-year-old pitcher Jericho Scott, whose pitching they say is so hard, fast and accurate that it might frighten or discourage other players

...

Coach Vidro and the Scotts claim the real reason league authorities want Jericho on a team other than Vidro’s Wilpower Fitness is because they have a vested interested in another team that is second in the standings and can’t get to number one past Jericho’s winning arm.

They said that team is sponsored by Carlito’s barber shop and that league president Reynaldo Reyes owns it. Noble said Reyes does have a chair at the barber shop temporarily while his own beauty shop is restored after a fire.
