You know, "bacon is meat candy" nearly scans to "Sheena is a punk rocker".

Have I mentioned that I've been short on sleep lately?

I've had mozarella sticks fried, rolled in bacon bits (real chopped up bacon, not chemical bacon flavored packing material), then dunked in hot melted sharp cheddar...

Take that, unclogged arteries!

battered bacon on a stick? (heart attack central, but there will be people who eat it....

When I was young, we would make Crumbed (breaded) Bacon. Just dip the bacon in Flour, egg then breadcrumbs and fry it for a tasty treat.

So.... is there anything to keep the bacon cold overnight, or does it spend all night in the food temperature danger zone before you wake up to your daily dose of trichinosis?

You start with a frozen piece, so it slowly thaws overnight, remaining safely cold.

Sadly, yesterday as I was leaving for school, my grandma was cooking up some bacon. Except... it didn't smell good. I figured something was wrong. I checked my temperature. Was normal. Hmmm... Then I found out it was not bacon, and was some other pork product. Gave me the sads.

Why is there turkey bacon but not chicken bacon?

As answered by Wikipedia's entry on bacon.... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon)

There also exists a product called "Turkey Bacon", which is made from turkey (http://www.answers.com/topic/turkey-bird), and is typically more lean than traditional pork bacon. New Zealand's Tegal chicken company has also launched a lean "Chicken Bacon", which is cured smoked chicken (http://www.answers.com/topic/chicken) that tastes similar to bacon, but has significantly less fat and sodium.

From now on, I should like to be referred to as one half of the couple known as the "Exquisitos." As in, "Are the Exquisitos coming to the party?" "No, Jim has to bake cheese that night." Or, "Look, over there, it's the Exquisitos! Let's invite them to dinner, they really are such wonderful conversationalists!"

EDDYVILLE, Ore. - It definitely doesn't smell as good as a bake sale. Seniors at Eddyville Charter School are raising three not-so-little pigs to earn money for their senior trip.

The 12 seniors at the farming community school say they will also try the traditional methods of fundraising like raffles or auctions. But the idea of the pigs has taken root.

Deep milk chocolate coats your mouth and leads to the crunch of smoked bacon pieces. Surprise your mouth with the smoked salt and sweet milk chocolate combination.

Crisp, buttery, compulsively irresistible bacon and milk chocolate combination has long been a favorite of mine. I started playing with this combination at the tender age of six while eating chocolate chip pancakes drenched in maple syrup. Beside my chocolate-laden cakes laid three strips of fried bacon, just barely touching a sweet pool of maple syrup. Just a bite of the bacon was too salty and yearned for the sweet kiss of chocolate syrup. In retrospect, perhaps this was a turning point, for on that plate something magical happened: the beginnings of a combination so ethereal and delicious that it would haunt my thoughts until I found the medium to express it--chocolate.

all I know is I dont spend 20 min cleaning up the mess after Ive cooked some and therefore get to have it slightly more often.
its especially nice if youre cooking something, get the brainstorm that 'some bacon bits would kick a$$ in this' and just grab a handful, chop and throw it in.

No. bacon will turn out okay in the micro if you do it right. First cut the bacon in half so you have shorter pieces. Then lay out more paper towels then you know you'll need - say 20 - in a pile and then put the bacon on top on one even layer. You can overlap just slightly as the bacon will shrink - but it will also stick the edges together a little. Then lay a bunch of paper towels on top - maybe 10. Microwave for 1 minute per FULL piece (you cut them in half - don't forget that - if you cut 5 pieces in half to make 10, I'm talking 5 minutes) - but soemtimes that's a tad bit too much so I always take 30 seconds off. That's that. nuke for 30-60 seconds more if it doesn't look done enough. this is for microwaves that rotate. if your's doens't - but a new one! ;)

So many paper towels, geez! I can see you buying the 24-pack of paper towels from Cosco. "Stocking up? No, I just want to make bacon."When I cooked the four pounds of bacon last weekend, I wished I had more paper towels. We only had a roll and a half left for the weekend. Bacon was a little greasier than I would have liked.

Use only 1-2 layers of actual paper towels, then put newspaper underneath to absorb the grease.

Betty
06-01-2007, 05:17 PM
That'd work just as well I'm guessing.

Really though - you can't cook enough bacon for the family in the micro. If you just want a few pieces for yourself it's fine.

I too use the oven and just lay it all out while I cook the rest of breakfast on the stove. Only problem with that is one side always cooks faster and I never remember to turn it around so I end up having to take out half and cook the rest for 5 more minutes.

Mmmm... bacon. We need more bacon 'round here folks.

Really though - you can't cook enough bacon for the family in the micro.Well I suppose that depends on the size of your family, but I've cooked enough bacon in the microwave for five people and it turned out crispy and delicious. You may need to stack more than one layer of bacon & paper products, but I've always had great results when I did it that way.

Since it's pissing down rain here for the last two cold shivery days, here's a recipe for you.....

Chunky Potato and Bacon Soup

Serves: 4

Ingredients
1 onion
4 rashers (or lots more, to taste) bacon, rind removed, roughly chopped
3 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
2 cups hot vegetable stock
3 sticks celery, sliced
2 tablespoons plain flour
2 cups milk
˝ cup grated tasty cheese
Ľ cup chopped fresh chives
Method

Spray a large pan with oil and allow to heat.
Add onion and bacon and cook for 1 minute.
Add potatoes and cook for a further 3 minutes over a low heat.
Add stock and celery to the potato mixture.
Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer covered for 10-15 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
Blend flour in half a cup of milk, then once blended add remaining milk and mix. Slowly pour mixture into the soup. Increase heat and stir constantly until soup boils and thickens.
Remove from heat and stir in cheese and half the chives.
Season to taste with cracked black pepper.
Serve topped with remaining chives.Oh, and why hasn't anyone found THIS SITE (http://www.sixdegreesofbacon.com/)yet ?

Next to the smoked gloriousness that is American-style bacon, I love nothing better than pancetta, the fresh cured Italian variety. Molinari's hand made in SF is my pancetta of choice and it may be 9 am, I'm craving it right now, as follows:

Pancetta with Peas

olive oil
2 cloves garlic minced
1/2 white onion diced fine
cream or half & half
pancetta 2-4 ounces diced (or more to taste)
dash of nutmeg
chopped parsley
pepper (salt only if needed)
pasta of choice (orichette is nice)
fresh parmasan or romano

In a medium hot pan add olive oil (about a tablespoon), add the diced pancetta and stir until browned and the fat is rendering. Add the diced onion, then garlic, stir well and lower heat so as not to burn the garlic. Boil the pasta and once it is nearly done, then add the peas (frozen are good, fresh are awesome, if using fresh, of course cook them a little bit longer) saute for a few minutes until well coated. Add cream or half and half to the pan, pepper, dash of nutmeg (only a little to taste). Drain the hot pasta and add to the sauce in the pan, toss in the parsley, mix all well until the pasta is coated, taste for seasoning, then serve it up, grate fresh cheese on top and enjoy.

Of course, the addition of more cooked pancetta on the top as a finisher is only an option but take my word, it is a good one.

Pancetta, it's what's for dinner!

Ugh I want some bacon. I am so afraid to eat anything now that I put myself on a diet, and have been eating lots of protein cookies.

Bacon is protein candy. Me want.
