I did a RtS on them, they're on the corner of Haight & Masonic and I understand the brew they make is awesome, as well. It's now a must do stop for me when I wander over to Ameoba to shop, and wander back to masonic to catch the bus home, they're right on the corner. I give them :snap: :snap: :snap: :snap: :snap:

I found some amazing, actually for really, low carb bread at one of my stores the other day. It's like 14 grams of carb, with 13 being fiber. And guess what? No crazy gastro side effects! So, I bought a head of iceberg lettuce. I bought a tomato. I didn't buy bacon 'cause I already owned some. And I'm going to take two, maybe three, slices of this magic bread, toast it up, slather it with mayo, and make me a BLT! For bonus points, It will be on raisin toast. I made Freedom French toast with it the other day and it was brilliant. I've got to remember to buy sausage.
This bread, by the way, is from Julian Bakers. It comes in a 1 gm carb per slice whole grain brick of bread, and a 3 gm carb per slice raisin. And it's really good. You know I've tried every low carb product out there, and this truly passes the test.

thats probably a good term for it. it was presented to me and nearly completely consumed before I was told what it was.
yeah...."interesting" works
I've stayed out of this thread because it has been more than 15 years since I last tasted real bacon (turkey bacon a couple times but that isn't worthy).
But this morning I was walking through the construction site between my apartment and the BART station. Suddenly there was this horrible odor and I couldn't figure out what it was.
Finally I realized it was coming from the roach coach that services the construction workers and after a few minutes of walking through it my brain finally pulled the odor from the dim recesses of memory and I realized it was just the smell of cooking bacon all by itself (it has been a long time since I've smelled just bacon cooking without adulteration by other cooking smells).
And to think, that at one point in time I would have considered that one of the great smells in the world. I am almost tempted to start eating it again just to reclaim that.

Alex, come to the dark side- we have bacon!
The truth is, other than incidental consumption of very small bits (occasionally I may pick sausage chunks out of country gravy, for example) I haven't consumed anything other than birds and fish since October 1992. As of two weeks ago I've cut out the birds on a trial basis.
The thought of bacon just doesn't appeal to me any more. I was just surprised that at some point I've gone from not wanting it to actually finding the smell unappetizing.

Roll bacon in flour, sprinkle with pepper and desired seasonings. Bake for 15 minutes at 400 degrees.
Apparently, the fat binds the flour, giving it a nice crispy breaded shell.

Best of both worlds, bacon and cupcakes!
MAPLE BACON CUPCAKES
makes 6
4 1/2 tablespoons of butter, room temperature
1/2 tablespoon of bacon drippings (left in the fridge to become solid)
1 egg
5 tablespoons of brown sugar
4 tablespoons maple syrup
1 1/4 cup of self rising flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
tiny tiny pinch of kosher salt
1/4 cup of milk
1/4 cup of minced bacon, cooked and drained
Cook some bacon in a fry pan (about 6 thick strips). Reserve the drippings and place in the fridge to solidify. Mince 1/4 a cup of the bacon. The chef should eat whatever is left to assure that the bacon is tasty. Beat the crud out of the butter and solidified bacon fat 'till light and creamy. Add the brown sugar and maple syrup and beat well until combined. Add the egg and beat until incorporated. Sift the flour, salt, baking soda and powder together. Add some of the flour and mix, then some of the milk, then continue to alternate the dry and wet ingredients, ending with the dry. Mix until just combined. Fold in the bacon. Taste and add more maple syrup, flour, or milk if needed for desired taste. Keep in mind the maple frosting is very sweet, and to add in very small increments for alterations as maple syrup in large amounts can break a cake batter. Scoop into cupcake papers and bake at 350 F for 18-22 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Be sure to rotate the pan after the first 15 minutes for even baking.

I could go on and on about good gelato, though I have yet to experience it in its place of origin.
Better yet, do they have bacon gelato?
Oh - and I forgot to post in here... I've been on a salad binge, which has included many different ingredients. One such crazy-a$$ed salad had spinach, mixed greens, simple vinaigrette, avocado, garbanzo beans (had a few to get rid of - seemed weird with the later combination, but worked out), grape tomatoes, crumbled bacon, blue cheese, grapes... of which I've decided that the last three make the most spectacular flavor combination I've had in ages.
Simply fantastic.

Except for the croissant, turkey, avocado, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo but add veal, breading, Parmesan cheese and marinara sauce.

Yesterday had some friends over for lunch (and a tarot card reading which was fun). On the menu (my new favorite condiment) chimichurri marinated chicken kabobs (awesome) and an incredible new side dish that will absolutely be in my repitoire now and forever. It is roasted stuffed peppers*
6 Red, Orange Yellow bell peppers (with stems - split and the seed pod and vein removed)
6 slices of thick bacon
variety of hot peppers (I used serrano and red jalapeno)
multi-colored cherry tomatoes
pitted calamata olives
capers
garlic
salt & pepper
parsley
basil
olive oil
Slice the peppers in half, remove the seed pod and the white rib/vein. Lay them out in a baking dish & add a dash of salt & pepper to the inside. Slice the hot peppers into rings (remove the seeds if you're wimpy). In a bowl, mix the cherry tomatoes, capers, pitted kalamata, pepper rings, chopped garlic, parsley and basil, drizzle in a bit of olive oil, mix well with your hands. Stuff the mixture in each pepper half, top with more shredded basil, then fold a bacon slice to cover the top of each pepper. Drizzle more olive oil on and around the peppers, add about 3 tables spoons of water and cover with foil. Bake in a hot oven for 15-20 minutes, then remove the foil and roast in a 425 over until browned and roasted and the bacon is cooked on top.
They were absolutely delicious! I'm sure I can and will modify this dish in the future with other goodies in it, but I will bet it's even delish without the bacon.

Tonight was make due with whatever leftovers you could find night. I think I invented the best soft taco ever!
I Started with the leftover chicken and shredded cheese on a fajita and put it in the microwav. Then I put on some lettuce, tomato, and avocado. I added some sour cream. However before you folded it and ate all that yummy goodness there one last secret ingredient I needed. I went through the fridge and found a baggie in the meat drawer from breakfast a few mornings ago. With flare, pomp, and circumstance I added the last secret ingredient.....

Our Portland morning show had a segment on eating out in PDX today. The theme was it's always better with bacon!
A place called Gilt had the BLT drink, it was tomato vodka, lemon and bacon salt around the rim.
Park kitchen had bacon fries. It was bacon strips dipped in tempura and fried along with green beans. They said they were looking for an companion for their green bean fries and thought " Everyone likes bacon"! They looked yummy.
Lastly there was Le Pigeon where they had a bacon dessert. They said they actually fry up many unusual bacons for their dishes, like duck. For dessert it was corn bread topped with maple ice cream with a bacon sauce drizzled over top. It looked unusual.
I figured I had to share with all the LoT bacon lovers!

Appleton police search for sandwich thief
The Post-Crescent
APPLETON — Police early Wednesday investigated the theft of two Spicy Baconator sandwiches as a drive-though employee and customer attempted to make their exchange.
Officers were called to Wendy’s, 3300 S. Oneida St., at about 1 a.m. According to police reports, a man grabbed the customer’s bag of food as the employee attempted to hand it from the drive-through window. The unknown man ran eastbound.
Police followed footprints in the snow, which ended in the 300 block of E. James Street, suggesting that the thief got into a vehicle.
The Wendy’s employee received a small scratch on his forearm during the incident, though he told police it wasn’t painful.

Then it occured to me. Turkey meat is not all that plyable, so how could it have that rubbery texture and still be turkey. And where'd all that cholesterol come from? Ding ding ding! The skin. It's turkey skin! Yum!
I'll stick with good old pork. Thank you very much.....

How do you know what ass tastes like? ;)
The Albertons where I shop often has bacon out in the heated sampling tray. I'm not sure why, most places has other products they sell. Perhaps it's the lovely aroma that brings out the people! But I'm all over it when they have the bacon out! :D
I wish the Albertsons in Bakersfield did that. It might override the smell of the fish counter.

Yep! Kilo packs, Half Kilo packs and 250g packs: we got it all ! When camping, a kilo pack is a necessity.
PS: My blood test results from last fri gives my LDL (bad) cholesterol as only 3.2 so the bacon camping didn't do no harm !!!! Yay.

Ever since that little exchange about bacon-wrapped lobster (or was it lobster-wrapped bacon?) I've had rumaki on the brain.
Well, maybe not rumaki per se, but rumaki-like hors d'ouvres.
Bacon-wrapped water chestnuts, glazed with brown sugar and worcestershire sauce
Bacon-wrapped cashews (? no idea why, but it sounds good), also glazed
Bacon-wrapped lil' smokies, also glazed
Holy cow, I need some friggin' bacon now.

Tonight we had mac and cheese... and bacon.
Trader Joe's had this thing of applewood-smoked uncured bacon that I picked up. Cooked up 3 slices in the oven while I made mac. Mmm...

I got snookered into eating at a Chili's the other day (meeting Mom for lunch and avoiding a drive to Riverside). I'd never been, and I'd never had a desire to go, now I'm mentally cataloging the location of each one I see.
Let me tell you about the bacon cheeseburger.
Nearly 1/2 inch thick sliced bacon, somewhat candied like we had on New Year's Eve. Was there a burger involved? I'm sure there was, but I can't remember it well enough to describe it except to say that it came with the most amazing bacon. The waiter said it was new on the menu. He was very chatty, but not cute enough to put up with for long. My stepfather said he must have had a lot of coffee, I opined that I thought it was crack.
But the burger was good. And they did a very nice bunless version for me. Conjunctions be damned, I will return.

I've actually been pleasantly surprised by Chilli's on several occasions. I still wouldn't choose to go there myself, but it's a far less distasteful option than, say, Olive Garden.

Some scary stuff. But not surprising. I've been counting calories for the last 3+ weeks (and actually losing weight), and when I'm craving fast food, I've been going to the Chowbaby Fast Food Calories page (http://www.chowbaby.com/fastfood/fast_food_nutrition.asp).
Lots of bacon options within a reasonable number...
Even a Turkey/Bacon Club at Schlotzky's is less than 600 calories.

Now, the recipe I've yet to try only calls for coating the bacon in flour and seasonings, then baking it, since the grease will "fry" the batter itself. It seems a bit healthier, even though it's pretty far from healthy to begin with.

Feh. Ever seen the nutritional info on the twice-grilled burrito at El Pollo Loco? It looks reasonably healthy till you see the numbers. (Hint: it's more than the bacon burger)
