Bacon also is dandy for infusing bourbon, apparently.

So, simple, so flavorful, so easy to prepare. What's not to love? I don't make it a staple by any means, but it's always a special treat.

My favorite way to eat it, other than with a greasy truck stop-esque breakfast (which I crave every so often) is when it is grilled and wrapped around shrimp or scallops. Yum!

Meat candy, indeed.

It has now been approximately 15 years since I last had a slice of real bacon.

Bacon and steaks were things I never thought I could get over. Steaks faded away within a year or so. Bacon took much, much longer. But now I have no desire to eat it and as with most cooking pork products find the smell unappetizing (other meats I don't eat don't bother me smellwise).

Bacon flavored ThinKrisps I heard someone say? Hmm. I'll have the boys in the lab get right on that.I'm so thinking those would be incredibly yummy. However, the grease might be an issue, so the bacon would probably need to be cooked and drained first. (Or just use pre-cooked bacon.) :snap:

Are these those salty potato type chips? If so, I haven't had those since high school. And that was by finding them at some off the wall liquor store.

Bacon is delicious. I love the maple smoked type. Or whatever you call it. When you cook it it smells soooooo good.

Not true!
I was a vegetarian for years and it was always the smell of bacon that drew me back to the dark side.

Almost every vegetarian or ex-vegetarian I know agree, it was the bacon that did me in!

Now, I do agree, getting rid of the fried bacon smell can be a problem later in the day when the last thing you want to smell is bacon grease.

Bacon? Not so much. That which drew me back to the dark side once every Christmas is the ham-cream cheese-green onion pinwheels my mom makes. But it wasn't so much a "drawn to the dark side" as it was a decision made before I ever arrived at my parents' home.

But it IS a pig product. I'll give you that.

Niman Ranch or Hobbs Applewood Smoked is really good.

In VA Calhouns Ham House made really wonderful smoked bacon, thick and tasty. I can't say I cared for VA country ham at all, it was pure salt and nothing delicate like prosciutto. Although VA natives loved it, to me it was just disgusting. But they could and did do great bacon.

I like tomatoes, but only thinly sliced. Same goes for my avocado. I use avocado as more of a "spread" since I really don't care for mayonnaise (use mayo pretty much only for making a tuna salad). Back to the tomatoes, I love the flavor, but pretty much can't stand chomping on a cherry tomato... because it GUSHES out. Ewww!

My perfect bacon sandwich would be bacon, sharp cheddar (though a good number of cheeses would be amazing), thin-thin-thinly sliced tomato with a few thinly sliced avocado pieces. Is it wrong that I'm quivering a bit at the thought?

No, all tomatoes are gross and I've had them. Tomatoes, zucchini, squash, cucumbers, strawberries, and corn were all vegetables grown in the yard growing up and never store bought when in season.

Yes, home grown tomatoes are different than store bought, but no less gross.

A little citrus is necessary unless the idea of brown guacamole is appealing. I prefer lime to lemon and not too much. Although, I've heard somewhere that if you place the avocado pit in with the guac, it will also prevent it from turning brown.

My perfect bacon sandwich would be bacon, sharp cheddar (though a good number of cheeses would be amazing), thin-thin-thinly sliced tomato with a few thinly sliced avocado pieces.

The other day, I bought a package of Boar's Head smoked gruyere cheese for some french onion soup I was making. After going to two stores, it was the only gruyere I could find. I suspected that the smoked flavor might not work quite right in french onion soup and I was correct. Bad idea.

And yet, I bet it would have been absolutely perfect for your bacon sandwich. The thought is making my mouth water, although I'm not quite at the quivering stage. :)

All it does is delay the browning of any guac directly underneath the pit because it's not as exposed to air. You can achieve a much better effect with plastic wrap.

you can keep your guac from turning if you press some plastic wrap directly against the surface so that there is no air between it and any of the guac.

I'm no fan of the tomato, either. While my lovely wife enjoys all sorts of tomatoes, and is particularly a fan of organic heirlooms, I just can't get past the texture.

Don't get me wrong - I love ketchup, tomato sauce, and all manner of tomato products, but raw tomatoes will ruin a good dish for me. Tonight, we went to a Peruvian restaurant, and my steak was smothered in cooked onions and tomatoes. I dealt with it... but it was they were unnecessary at best.

Though years of California living have made me love some avocado and bacon on my burger...

Born and raised on the east coast left me with no taste for guacamole. I hate the stuff.

I was lucky in that we had briefly lived in California after I was born and my parents loved mexican food. However, when we moved to Long Island, much to our dismay, there was none to be had. The only avocados were those nasty Florida monstrosities. Occasionally, Dad would travel to LA on business and bring back a suitcase of of avocados, tortillas, jalepenos, etc. It was always a really special treat. All of my friends though we ate very strange food though.

As far as tomatoes, my dad has always been a fanatical gardener. I grew up pretty much always having fresh tomatoes that were unlike anything available in the store. In the summer, he would slice them and some onions and put balsamic vinegar over them, along with a little salt and pepper. I hated the onions, loved the tomatoes. To this day, I'll eat them no matter how they are prepared. Well, except stewed, I suppose. Then again, I don't think I've ever had a stewed tomato. It just sounds wrong.

I love tomatoes, raw and cooked. I have snacked on cans of tomato paste and squeezed tubes of it onto my finger for a snack. I prefer good raw tomatoes to pallid bad ones. The only time I like a bad tomato is at a pizzeria where they give you a side salad with ice berg lettuce, a bad tomato, a slice of salami, some pepperoncini, a little oil and vinegar and a lot of salt. Somehow that works.

Some raw tomatoes have too much wet seed bits that are properly cut away. Dry farm tomatoes minimize this and have more intense tomatoey flavor.

If I were to live by the Cooking for Your Blood Type recommendations, I would swear off tomatoes, as well as most of the foods I enjoy.

I use lime in guacamole, not lemon.

The high overlord of satanic food products is the raisin. The raisin's chieftan underlords are tomatoes, avocado, and natto (chief underlord of Asia).

Together they rule in Satan's name with a monolithic disgustingness whose only chink is the fact that tomato's evil can be cleansed with the purifying power of the flame. This is a metaphysical counterbalance to the fact that the raisin only acquires its full potential evil from the flame as it is perverted from its innocent purity of youthful grapeness by the sun.

Together they seek to overwhelm the world through very ubiquity by appearing all over the place without announcement. It is amazing how many sandwich places will list every ingredient in a sandwich but the tomato. How many bread puddings and cinnamon rolls have been corrupted by the unannounced presence of raisins. How avocado has mind-melded with America's culinary institutions to deceive chef's into the notion that avocado goes well with everything.

Natto, fortunately, is so far an underperformer in the Western region. But foreign unknown gods are no less terrifying.

These are dark and troubling times, my friends, and we must be resolute and perpetually wary in our defense against the evil's encroachment. The prophet John De Bello warned us so many years ago and so few have chosen to listen. They'll come to regret their complacence.

Bacon scented candles. It's a sure fire winner.

I just made some bacon for dinner and my whole house smells yum. Of course because of this thread you're all chipping in for my stay at the little known Betty Ford Clinic for Bacon addiction.

I had some bacon and eggs this morning to fortify me for my first full team practice. We still have some left - and now we have scallops. So we can have bacon wrapped scallops!

 Wowa! Was it really a half pound? Yikes!Yes, but I am pretty sure that it was a 1/2 pound pre-cooked weight. It wasn't an abscene amount of bacon, just a greater amount of bacon than one is used to getting.

Oh, that makes since. Half pound (8 oz.) raw is probably only 3 oz. cooked!

By they way, does Turkey bacon and imitation bacon bits count? I had both of those today. :D

Peter Brady, actually. ;)

And no, I'm not particularly proud of knowing that there is a part of my brain that stores this type of information.

By my book, no. Unless a pig died for my gastronomic indulgence, it ain't bacon.

But, unlike boar or pork chops, at least it is flavored like bacon.

I'm trying to watch my fat and cholesterol, so pork is more of a treat taken omly occasionally. But nothing compares to the real bacon, that's for sure!!

I have only had one corndog at DL, from the red cart, and it was so full of grease that it sat on my stomach like a brick. Is that normal, or did I get a bad corndog? Are they better from the Corndog castle at DCA?

Corn Dog Castle has hot and spicy corn dogs. I'm not sure those would end up being less of a brick in your stomach, though.

And deep fried cheese on a stick, which I keep meaning to try but get distracted by the spicy dogs.

When we were in Japan, one of Heather's favorite dishes at our favorite yakitori stand was fresh tomatoes wrapped in bacon and grilled on a stick. I'm pretty sure that NA and € could also attest to their deliciousness.
