Of course, all we have is his word that he's got it right
Oh, I'm right. I've been to Maui. I've seen them.
So, who else heard the NPR stories this morning on the pumpkin crop and Indian Market in Santa Fe? Pumpkins and Indian jewelry - I'm so there!
Which is why I felt NPR let us down. The pumpkin crop is down but by how much? Pumpkin prices are up but, again, by how much? And those elusive white pumpkins - those ghost pumpkins - of which they spoke, who ever heard of those before???
Then there was the reporting on the economy and Indian Market weekend. Know that 3894/Helen + Indian Market weekend + $1,000 = pure joy. Where were the details on exactly how the economy has affected what the artists are offering, NPR? Details, we needed the details!

That's interesting, katiesue. The orange ones are $2.00 for a big one here. We'll also have very cheap Christmas trees before too long.
I have never seen a white pumpkin or heard of one. They must not grow them here.

I doubt that Matt was "one of those teens that went around late on Holloween smashing all the pumpkins on peoples porches or tossing them in the streets"
Now if you had said, "Matt was one of those teens that went around late on Holloween smashing all the pumpkins on peoples porches from 3/4 of a mile away"
I might be more inclined to accept your statement.

Dave Letterman was SMART to just come out and admit what he'd done. What better way to shut down the rumor machine than to take all the fun out of it by owning up to your misdeeds.
I can't condone the cheating on his relationship, but you have to admire a guy who comes out and admits what he's done. Sort of like, "Yeah, I'm a rich powerful guy and women who work on my show want to sleep with me, and yeah, I took them up on that offer". Also, I think he kind of did it to protect the women involved.

When I head about this, I formed a mental picture of the perp being something close to Kenneth the page on 30-Rock. A low level with nothing to lose.
Turns out the guy is (err, was) a respected producer for 48 Hours. Making enough that his child support was over $6,000/month. Talk about a fall. This guy is going down hard. What a dufus. So what's he gonna blame: drugs, gambling, dames or all three for the trifecta?

Certainly the woman involved could make this a very different situation. If they were harassed into sex by virtue of Letterman's power then that's a real issue. If one or more women were active participants in the plot they deserve the same fate Mr. Dufus is heading for.
If it was consensual, which so far it appears to be, then this is pretty much over for Letterman publicly. Mrs. Letterman might still have some issues but that's for the two of them to work out.

I still wonder which team Letterman truly plays for as he is alternately goofy or rudely dismissive to attractive starlets and positively giggly around male star athletes.
He has no obligation to tell us about his sexual relationships. He's not a politician, he's not a moral crusader.
He certainly could have tried to go a route that might have prevented this from being common knowledge.
His obligation is to his wife. Since theirs is a long relationship I assume the sex was in same way cheating (though for all I know she knew and didn't care).
To the extent that it was workplace inappropriate he had an obligation to CBS.
So, I don't care at all that he had sex. I vaguely care about the nature of the proof that the guy provided because now i have to be worried that there's a David Letterman sex tape (or photographs) that will eventually make its way to the internet. And I don't need to stumble onto that unexpectedly.
As for the announcement on the show he really should have, at the beginning (or had someone say so during the commercial break) told the audience that this was not going to be a funny story. That he wasn't building to a punchline. That would have avoided some of the inappropriate laughter and clapping.
Dave, call me.
Kidding. Who cares with whom and under what circumstances Letterman ... Great, now I have a mental picture of him with only his socks and his glasses on
Ew.

Well, it is somewhat unprofessional, as Alex says. And to that extent, he may be trying to avoid naming names because it's more likely to cost the women their jobs than it is the star his.
But the main point is, this could have turned into a good old fashioned huge media <<scandal!>> and instead of avoiding it or attempting to keep it on the down-low and having it come out anyway, he just came out on the show and said yeah, I suck, I did this. And if that means the media quiets down that much sooner, good. Because, like you say, he's an entertainer, not a politician. So while we might lose a little respect for him, it doesn't really affect us.

So I've watched the first two episodes of Eastwick. It is really stupid and bad but something about it is appealing to me. So I've watched on Hulu while doing other things on the computer (I guess I no longer get to mock Monk fans).
Anyway, I've been wondering about the racial makeup of Lindsay Price (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm489457920/tt1402376), one of the leads. Clearly hapa and we all know hapas are the cutest. Anyway, she's Korean-German.
What I found interesting though is that her mom is the adopted sister of her dad. Her parents were raised as siblings. Now, I don't really have a problem with it, I just find it interesting. Must make for good cocktail party stories. However, growing up it would have reduced the sources for Christmas parents since she only has two grandparents instead of four.

Kevy, I'm pretty sure I was attending the same horse show as you and your mom this past weekend!
I was photographing and reporting about the horse show for my place of employment, which publishes several equestrian magazines.
Sooooo ... I am interviewing a rider who just won first place in a draft horse competition, and find out the horse is named "Major," a Belgian Draft Horse, who worked the past five years as one of the horses on Main Street, U.S.A. for the Horse-Drawn Streetcars! So, I get even more excited since I actually remember Major. Being an admirer of horses, I actually take the Horse-Drawn Streetcars often and recall Major pulling other guests and I down Main Street on a few occasions.
It's also a sweet story in that the rider who I interviewed at the horse show is also a Horse-Drawn Streetcar cast member who bought Major after the horse was retired by Disneyland. The cast member (and equestrian) loved Major enough to buy the horse after its Disney retirement and ensure it has a good home. :)

Unrelated note:
I can't wait for the 2011 west coast Disney cruising, so I'm planning to cruise in the early months of 2010. Parameters are: it has to leave out of LA and be no longer than 7 days. This pretty much means Mexican Riviera and a choice of NCL, RCI, or Carnival. The NCL ship would be the Star, which is the one and only ship I've already been on, so I'm leaning toward one of the other two. Also, according to online room layout diagrams, the other two put the bed next to the balcony and the seating area further in, while NCL puts the seating area next to the balcony and the bed further in. A primary goal of this cruise will be sex while listening to ocean waves, so I'm thinking bed closer to balcony would be preferable.
Anyone have any experience with either RCI or Carnival that I should consider? It need not be sex-related. Pants, however, are optional.

So, related story: Yesterday, my kid had an interview with Swarthmore. For this area of the country, they were doing them in the café part of a Borders in Madison, WI. Hubbo and I had a quick cup of coffee, then hightailed it to another part of the store to get out of the way, leaving our kid to wait for the interviewer.
Maybe half an hour later, a guy comes up to us. "I just wanted to meet you," he says. "I saw you with your daughter in the coffee area and I overheard part of her interview after you left. So, I wanted to meet you."
Uh oh is what Tom and I were both thinking.
"What a childhood she has had!" this guy says. He goes on to list the various things we've done during our summers, which he has overheard her talking about during the interview. "Great job, guys. Great job!"
It wasn't creepy. It was great. When you have cranky, know-it-all teenagers, it's very nice to be validated once in a while. And stan4d_steph shares in the props as she's guided us to both Teton Science School and Woods' Hole oceanographic stuff.

Several years ago I was on a 3 day Catalina-Ensenada short cruise. In a teeny-weeny inside cabin. I shared with a co-worker and learned way more than I ever wanted to know about that person. The short cruises are reputed to be for a rowdier bunch of passengers, right? Though what made this a "party ship" wasn't the itinerary. The ship was just hammered, with cracked panes of glass and stains on the carpet. I honestly can't remember which cruise line it was, I think I blocked it out of my memory.
More specifically, I want popcorn served to me by a hot guy. Clive Owen or Matt Damon will do nicely, thankyouverymuch.
I'm with you, sister. But he doesn't have to be hot. I'd be happy with kind and funny (but not kinda funny, that's not good enough :p )

I just had Facebook suggest someone I haven't seen in years, who I don't have their contact info for as a friend. I'm thrilled that it knew, but it's a bit creepy.
I really want to understand the Facebook friend recommendation process.
I have a few theories:
It remembers who came up when you search by email (this I'm pretty sure since people in my contact list show up as recommendations after I log out)
It remembers who you searched for and recommends the searcher to the searchee.
It's really HAL
Anyone else have a better understanding or theories? It really is a bit creepy how it can suggest random people you know.

My Facebook page recently suggested I might like to be friends with the single lady down the street, the one known for her messy affair with a married man. Mrs. Moonie was not amused.
Here's the great thing about forgetting people's names very reliably if I've had no contact with them for a couple years (seriously, went to bachelor party a couple months ago with some people I worked with for years at Wells; recognized everybody, remembered maybe 10% of their names):

We had camping failure this weekend. First, on the way to Anza Borrego (Blair
Valley to be specific), the transmission seemed to lose the gear it was in. We pulled over and it was fine. But the check engine light came on. According the manual, the light is not imenent danger unless it's blinking - see if what it was happens again or if the light just goes off. We check all the fluid levels and then continue on our way.
We get to camp and realize our friends may have trouble finding us - but start to set up camp. Where's the directions to the tent? Not in the box. Hmmm... We've set this tent up once before... do we remember. Apparently not. In the process of trying to set it up, I break a little plastic connector piece and we can't use the tent now.
Determined, we decide we'll sleep on a tarp and still use the cot and air mattress. We'll see how it goes if we stay the whole 4 days or leave in the morning when our friends do.
Our friends finally find us, after dark - which was pretty amazing. They bring a new telescope to see the lunar crash thing on Friday morning but can't get it in focus... but still think they are seeing something... I gave up and went back to watching the fire. He's got a new girlfriend that I don't really know and I didn't want to totally insult her/them by saying they weren't seeing anything. It was put together in the dark - I almost wonder if something was on backwards or something.
Anyway - Lot's of fun was had... staying up into the wee hours and chattikng... and in the morning we break camp and think - we could get more wood and camp at another spot. Hmmm... and just as we're deciding to do that, the transmission thing happens again.
sigh.
So - we came home just to be safe. Didn't want to be caught in the desert without a working transmission.
Feel sort of like I wasted a vacation day - but that didn't stop me from not going to work today (not a normal workday) to make it up.
Brought the vehicle to the dealership because it looks like it may be a power train warranty thing - which is great if so. But they "don't have any tranny guys in today" so I must wait until Monday at least and most likely several days before I get it back.

I've been there before so I knew what the exit should look like, and the exit my GPS told me to take did not look like the exit I took in the past. She's trying to kill us too. Have you forgotten that our state catches on fire once every other year or so? And then the subsequent rain and mud slides?
Mother Nature gave us an earthquake last night (a 3.7 that apparently nobody outside our valley felt). But I don't take it personally.

If the ceremony is held between strangers, there is zero point.
Sweats are held for the same purpose as group therapy/intervention/problem solving sessions. It's always with just a few people, often family. You sit in your bathing suit in a sauna-type atmosphere and talk over/pray over the problem.
There has to be a high level of mutual trust and history going in to the sweat. This is why 50 strangers paying for a sweat is 110% bull.

First Google announces it's going to create a eBook store (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/01/technology/internet/01google.html) to go after the niche currently held by Amazon/Kindle. Only their shop will be hardware independent so you will be able to read your book on just about anything.
Then there is Walmart, who apparently has their panties in a twist because people keep calling Amazon the "Walmart of the web". So they are launching a full frontal assault (http://gizmodo.com/5383188/walmarts-war-on-amazon-could-obliterate-the-publishing-industry-even-more) on amazons book business. Heavily discounting some highly anticipated upcoming books.
And Amazon has started same-day delivery (http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=26095)
I gotta say, it would make me nervous if both Google and Walmart were gunning for my customers.
Isn't that what Amazon did when it first started?
I see this hurting independent resellers who use Amazon as a selling platform for their own business more than I see it hurting Amazon. The independent resellers have been able to undercut Amazon's prices for years.

According to that article:[Amazon] said it will provide same-day delivery in seven cities—New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Seattle and Washington D.C.—with plans to add Chicago, Indianapolis and Phoenix in the months ahead.Am I the only one who thinks it's odd that Los Angeles is not on that list?

I'd suspect it's not in LA because you guys are so dammed spread out and then there is the traffic. Also, if you look at the cost, I think you'll see it's a bit of a niche market that won't get all that much use anyway.
For example, Shipping charges on books is a base of $14.49 + $3.99/book and they can deliver up until 8:00pm.

The market for iTunes and iPods have not collapse under pressure of the copious non-hardware-dependent competition out there. Amazon may eventually have to make the same kinds of concessions that Apple eventually did re: DRM and such, but as long as they continue to position their product as a superior usability option than trying to read on your phone or your laptop, they should have nothing to worry about. Even if this leads to a boom in readers, Amazon has the same advantage with the Kindle that the iPod has. Namely, popularity breeds popularity and being the first to get the concept right gives you a lot of momentum, even if competitors can produce technically equivalent/superior/cheaper products. People still want iPods, if Amazon plays it right, they'll still want Kindles.

So are you arguing there is no reason for Amazon to worry about Google and Walmart going after it's business or just that it won't totally collapse Amazon?

When isn't there a reason for huge companies to worry about where they might be losing business? Of course it's something they'll have to address, they can't just cross their fingers and hope it all works out, they'll obviously have to come up with a business plan to keep themselves relevant. All I'm saying is that there are a couple factors (gadget loyalty and an existing model to emulate) that tend to tilt the balance in their favor.
Google actually has a horrible track record of rolling out sustainable self monetizing products.
So I'm sure Amazon is watching very closely but I haven't seen enough yet to say it is a huge threat. And the Google books will be for sale through Amazon as well so do a certain respect success will rebound back to Amazon. Interested in the limitations on the Google purchases since I'm not clear why the publishers would be any looser on DRM with them than with Amazon and if they're going to be mostly self publishers and public domain books then that's hardly a threat at all (seeing as the former are almost universally crap and the latter are almost universally lacking in market).
But more players is always potentially a good think. The Sony/B&N eInk partnership rolls out soon too and I'll be watching that closely as well.

I agree, it's primarily about content. Right now Amazon has the best content for eBooks. If Google/Sony/Barnes & Nobel/whoever can't sell the books I want then I don't care how good their eReaders are.

There are many women who forbid their spouses from drinking or riding rollercoasters while they have to sit these things out, but that's not my way of thinking. Well, I guess I won't be buying Pillsbury cookie dough any more. I was at the market tonight and took a quick look to price dough, and I noticed the dreaded word "flavored". Chocolate Chip flavored Cookie Dough.
Remember that whole thing where companies were trying to replace cocoa butter with other fats, like soybean oil, and still call it chocolate? Instead, at least so far, they still have to refer to it as chocolate flavored. So those chips... not real chocolate.
Yeah, not going to support that change.
